Opinions on Saabs.....

Thinking about gettting a used Saab - I'm kinda floored that one can get a used Saab 93 (either Linear or step up model) for roughly the same price as a used Jetta or Civic!! I'm not kidding. What am I missing here. My bud who is bigtim into cars seems to think they just don't hold their value but are good cars. Looking in the 16k or less used car range.

opinions??

sorry for putting it here, but I think the car forum is no longer.

Re: Opinions on Saabs.....

I had a 9-5 Linear sedan for 3 years on a lease that ended two years ago. It was a pretty nice car. No problems, decent gas mileage and good power. I would have leased another one after my lease was up but we shuffled cars when the second kid came along and I took over the wife's SUV. I got a really good lease deal on the car (like $350 a month with nothing down and no security deposit) considering the sticker price.

I did notice when the lease was up that the private party sale values on KBB.com were a bit below the lease buyout, but not substantially. Since my payments were so low on the lease, I didnt care that much.

From my experience the older ones are better than the newer ones. I can't tell you exactly where that line is, but my gf's dad owns a 2003 and absolutely hates it. Nothing but problems. I would do some research first on the year you are buying.

Pretty much the opposite of what industry quality reports suggest.

Re: Opinions on Saabs.....

Saabs are pretty fun to drive, but expect higher than average maintenance costs and not-so-great reliability. Audi is a lot like this as well - drops in value pretty quickly, so it's tempting to look at like A4's, but they require a lot of work.

If you get an accord, stick with a 6-cylinder manual model, or something newer than '04.

The automatic transmissions up until 04 have some serious problems, and the 6 cyl has less problems than the 4cyl.

Saab has major issues when the car breaks down.

Mechanics are expensive because there aren't very many Saab mechanics, and parts are way too expensive.

I would not buy a Saab.

My mom had a Saab for less than two years. She went to the mechanic more often than she went to the supermarket. That thing was a lemon. She got rid of it, picked up an Acura, and has never been happier.

A used Swedish car for less than $16k is a junker for sure. Forget stylish on your budget and just buy a used Honda/Toyota with no regrets.

forgot this was about the us, in sweden saabs are one of the most common cars so all mechanics know them inside out.

My uncle had a Saab for years and years. I thought he loved it. Turns out I was waaaay wrong. He HATED it. He's also rich so I asked why he didn't get rid of it long ago and he told me that would be wasteful. Now I know why he's rich.

You could always buy the Mazda3 - it's less expensive and basically the same car.

i have a 2006 saab 9-3. i really, really like it. i don't think i'm gay or too much of an a-hole.

but maybe i'm wrong.
i really, really do enjoy it, however, and have had zero mechanical problems after almost two years and 40,000 miles.

I always thought saab's were ugly and overpriced. You can get a ton better car for the money than a goofy looking saab.

hmmm. Wonder how that Saturn Astra will be - (but it's basically an Opel finally for sale in US - kinda sporty, but it's GM - run Forest run!!!) So many cars to choose from. Anything is better than my Civic with 230k on it - lol (They really do last forever)

OK - I see lots of black circles on the older models but getting more red as we get closer to present time... - what about a used Mini Cooper ??? too Ghey right???? and maintenance right???? meh - just trying to avoid boring Japanese.

We need the car forum back
