What happen to PokerStars? Massive Fish invasion?

Seriously, either I’ve become the luckiest person playing poker, or something is up with PokerStars this month. Horrible players are to be found at NL25.

Here’s what I’ve seen in the last two days.
All in every hand till he busts out.
Buy in short, push all in any pocket pair. Get busted and repeat.
NEVER fold any flush draw, including 23 on a paired board FOR ANY AMOUNT. 3PSB, no problem call.
Never fold with any piece of the flop, including bottom pair and a 2 kicker.
KJ calling down 2/3 – pot sized bets every street.
AJ calling down 2/3 – pot sized bets on a TT4A2 board
Player pushing A7o over a 2% preflop raiser.

I don’t quite understand it. It seems so many players seem to have been beaten with the stupid stick. People seem to be playing worse than at .01/.02.

Anyone have an explanation? Or have I just been incredibly lucky?

The problem is, I'm pretty much a horrible player, and even to me during the last week players have been even worse.

I didn't wake up one day able to play poker, yet suddenly there's a huge difference in skill that didn't exist last month. I'd like to know why.

Theres been over 17,000 cash players on stars for the past 5 days which is 2500-3000 more players than this time last month so maybe there's a pay method thats been introduced that makes it easier for casual players to deposit.

availability of e-checks again for most people

Maybe US players can now deposit via E-Check again. I received a notification sometime in October that PayTru will not be renewed once the card's expiration date is reached.

I live in NY, my coworkers buy prepaid visa cards at the supermarket and turn $50 into $2 by Monday morning playing on stars.

Was there something in particular that made you come back? That could be drawing other people in with money to throw away.

Re: What happen to PokerStars? Massive Fish invasion?

Nothing specific for me--I think the new deposit thing is part of it. Potentially the weather changes in some of the US might too (getting colder and wintery, so less outside activities) and ESPN always seems to have something on with poker these days.

We might've seen the same hand. I saw that play today. Preflop raiser had KK. A7 pushed all in on a flop of T87. Yay river seven!!

I play 25NL and I know what people mean when they say that all of the 25NLers are horrible--I readily admit that I am--but STILL . . . there HAS been a huge difference in the player quality down there. I mean, some are horrible because they're nits, slowly bleeding their blinds away, getting pushed around by good players, and folding everything except the nuts. They struggle, but at least they can read the board. Recently there seems to have been an influx of raging doofuses, pushing all in with the ass end of a straight on a flush board.

If you have been playing @ Stars lately and did not notice that the level of play has gotten softer then you have a problem because it has been very obv.; and not just @NL25.

Deffinately agreeing with chargers that the table selection since 24 max has blown goats. I havn't played in 2 days though so I dunno how it is right now.

I've noticed this too. Especially when I was at one of Berge's tables for a while the other night. Actually other than making a few dollars what I have really noticed is that my FPP's are accumulating quite a bit faster than normal. Maybe it's time to grind a bit.

Just pulled in 5 buy-ins in 1000 hands. There I was hoping I'd taken my game forward to a whole new level. Damn!

(Still, it was pretty obvious. I'm running at 10PTBB/100 12 tabling so far this month! The crap people have been calling with has been *amazing*.)

Whatever the cause, long may it continue!

Yes, it happens often at most levels, it used to not happen every couple of orbits.

The games have gotten seriously softer, and transparent hands get called down for large amounts.

Often I needed someone to make bad calls like the above to simply remain a small winning player, but now I'm up 4 buy ins in the past 1,000 hands, and 2 of those are in the past 130 hands.

After posting this I won a buy in waiting to go to dinner. That could have happened a month or so ago, but it wasn't nearly as common as it seems right now.

have to say i've noticed a lot more fish than usual at 50 and 100 nl this week. Seems like every time i have a hand some1 is all in with something terrible. I keep having to type "totally overcommitted oop w/ TPNK" in the player notes!

I believe it works out to an average of one FPP per FR orbit at 25NL. (can't find the link that was posted in the zoo a while ago that gave the info)

customer_nr1 11-10-2007 12:43 PM

Re: What happen to PokerStars? Massive Fish invasion?

Yeah, I think that's right you get 1 FPP per ~7 hands. But if you have a few hands in PT you can always check it on the game notes tab by filtering for hands in which the rake is more than $0.4(you get a second FPP if the rake reaches $3 but that's negligible at NL25).

BotOnTilt 11-10-2007 01:20 PM

Re: What happen to PokerStars? Massive Fish invasion?

Thanks for the info! I was expecting to get the points faster, but I'm used to sites which give points for $.25 rake and I didn't know how much difference it would make.

I switched from sng's to NL10 a week ago(10k hands).. and shortly after N/PL25(2500),
so I must be partially to blame

I keep running into a ton of 2+2ish players and wondering who actually is.

It seems completely backwards to ask your opponents for advice..
but I'd really appreciate some criticism if you've played with me.

This sucks. This is my first month in 2yrs that I am not winning, and you guys are all bragging about how easy the tables are.

halpgr 11-16-2007 12:35 PM

Re: What happen to PokerStars? Massive Fish invasion?

It's not a big surprise. In the last month or so during prime time weeknights the lobby is always showing over 100,000 players, sometimes upwards of 120. A few months ago it was around 80-90 K during prime time. So there seems to be around 25 K new players from somewhere.

My theory is that new players as a group tend to be worse than existing players as a group so adding around 30% new players has made it easier for the existing players. At least until the new players bust or adapt and start playing better. Let's hope the number of players continues to increase.

Been overestimating them and folding too much?

I'm only half joking here...I've been making much looser calls this month, originally because I moved up to 12-tabling and had less decision time, then deliberately because I was so often winning the showdown!
