tipping question

I have a vague recollection that we used to have a lot (too many) threads here about tipping, but I have a specific question.

Today, movers are bringing a baby grand piano to my house. The company that sold me the piano pays for the moving cost.

In addition, we are going to ask the movers to move an existing upright piano to another floor (until we get rid of it). They told me there will be a fee for that.

So, the question is simply: in addition to the extra fee to move the second piano, should these guys be tipped? And how much?

How many guys? And do they work for the company that sold the piano or are they a third-party?

They are a third party, hired by the company that sold the piano. I have no idea how much the company is paying them to transport the piano to me. And I don't know yet how many guys. I guess 2-3.

I also don't know yet what they will charge me to move the second piano. I guess they'll make that decision when they see what's involved - and see how much of a sucker I am.

$20 to the head guy to share among them.

Re: tipping question

$20 would be a nice tip unless the fee to move the other piano is excessive. You might even want to suggest that you'll pay them directly to move the piano, cutting out the middle man.

All done. There were three of them, they got $20 each. I believe that was plenty, because the whole job went very fast.

I doubt there's many personalized physical labour jobs that wouldn't appreciate a 20 buck tip. Nicely done.

$1 PER PIANO YOU [censored] CHEAPSKATE!

Re: tipping question

i don't think there is a standard here without hearing more about how much you paid for the delivery and how much work they had to do to move your other piano.

$20 for the group when they are delivering an expensive item that you also paid a delivery fee for is probably a reasonable default. especially if it takes them <5 or 10 minutes to do.

did they have to do any heavy lifting or were they able to roll it? did it take them more than 15 minutes?

$20/person seems like it's on the high end but it totally depends on how much work they were doing and how much you were already paying for them to do it.

so you tipped them $60 for something you should have paid <$60 for? awesome.

Yeti 11-09-2007 04:47 PM

Re: tipping question

so how much was the fee?

Wynton 11-09-2007 04:50 PM

Re: tipping question

The extra fee was $75 (i.e., the fee I paid for moving the old piano). And I do believe that the tip was probably excessive. But they were helpful, patiently tried different configurations in the room and, besides, I do believe it's cool to err on the side of tipping too much.
