Ever Been Threatened in a Card Room?

I hadn't until today.

Head to the local place for a little 2/4 this morning but nothing was happening, so I put my name down for the $40 NL tourney. I haven't played NL let alone a tourney in a long time, so I'm not too worried about it.

It ends up with three tables, and I'm sat with a pleasant older bunch of retirees which is fine by me. Until "Sunglasses" sits down.

That's what I mentally named him, and somehow I knew he was trouble. Maybe 25ish, track/jogging suit, NY baseball cap, 5-day stubble and wraparound sunglasses. Yessir, he thought he was the next WPT champion, but I simply inwardly smiled and played.

The very first hand he loses 90% of his stack to AQ when the guy holding it rivers a Q. He's seething.

I run hot for a few hands, raising all of them and taking them down without a flop. Then it's his BB and my button, and I look down at AKo. It's folded around to me, so I raise to a pot-sized bet, and he seriously goes in the tank.

To help him out, I say that we can just move to the next hand and he can bust me there, and he mucks, shouting that he's "been doing this a long time" and that I should show my "pocket jacks". Okay bud.

He doesn't let up, so I put on *my* sunglasses (upside down of course) and then kinda skew them a little, and get a good round of laughs from everyone - including him!

Fast forward about an hour. I get moved, he busts out, I move back to the original table and I bust out with JJ (the irony!). No biggy, put my name down for 2/4 and step out of the cardroom to go to the bathroom and Sunglasses steps out from behind a pillar and squares up to me

"Listen man, you call me out like that again and we're going outside and you ain't coming back..."

I honestly thought he was kidding, so I kinda blinked and said "okaayyyyyyy" waiting for the "hahaha gotcha kidding!" from him, but it didn't come.

Uh oh.

I told him I didn't want to go outside, especially over a 300 chip pot that in the end didn't even effect either of our placings, and he backs up a little saying "You gotta go outside sometime, man. You can't stay in here forever".

At that point security was called and he starts walking towards the nearest exit, then runs to it and runs out of the casino.

It's the only time this has happened to me and I will admit it's shaken me up quite a bit. I've seen this individual at this room a few times, always playing tournament (never cash games) and pretty much always wearing the same outfit.

Needless to say I will be playing somewhere else from now on.

Don't be scared of him, let him hit you and then collect some money!!! Whenever someone wants to fight me I say "you go right ahead and throw the first punch so I can take everything you own." Typically, if they value money at all, they realize they are dumb and let it go.

To answer the question posed:

A guy that was aged approximately death +15 took a swing at me with his cane when I quartered him in a 3/6 omaha game. He missed.

I'm not sure if that counts as being threatened though.

Just ignore the little bastard. If he is really scaring you confront him and tell him it would be in his best interest to never look at you or speak to you again. Then turn around and walk away. If he does do one of the two, PM me with the details and I'll give further advice.

Threatening to sue is a bitch move.

In my experience, people who are going to do something, just do it. They don't threaten to do it. If you want to alter where you play based on that incident, that's your call. Personally, I don't let punks dictate where I play.

Re: Ever Been Threatened in a Card Room?

The thing is that if he got that bent out of shape with me over a 300 chip pot when it was plain as day I had a decent hand, then what happens if I suck out at a later date, or something else?

I've had people swear at me many times, call me all kinds of names while playing but this was the first time I've ever actually been threatened in a casino. I just thought it was worth a post and a little discussion that's all.

Yes, twice, once we went outside I showed him my Ruger, he walked back in, picked up his chips and left.

The 2nd time Dale Apollo Cook was sitting at the same table and indicated it was a bad idea for him to threaten me.

I have been threatened in a casino and received death threats on my voice mail. I am also pretty sure we have done this thread in the last few months.

This reminds me of my days at Penn when the weanies from Princeton, who couldn't take a little good natured ribbing, would retort, "Oh yeah, well you'll be working for us someday."

But I have the last laugh now. I'm not working for them, and no one makes better Big Macs than I do.

Not sure why you keep referring to a 300 chip pot.

If anything, it seems like the whole sunglasses thing you did and how you got the whole table to laugh at him that did it. I guess he saw that as something humiliating. And people like that typically don't have much other than pride.

Not that you did anything wrong, but I wouldn't say it was smart either.

Just as in the "dealer wants witty put downs" thread, people here seem to forget that some players do not have the same sense of humor they have. What can be a throw away line for most of us will get you an enemy for life.

YOu mocked him, offended him, and made him an object of ridicule before the other s at your table. From your post I gather this was unsolicited or to put it clearly he did not challenge you first. No one likes to be demeaned. Do it to others and you will find that one guy who will have you, no matter what. He may be psychotic(after the fact) but in the world of feelings you have no defense.

In short you were an a-hole.

Only a child could ask such a question. The paradigm of challenge, laugh, mock is a prime mover in murder. People seek and deserve respect. To attack a cliche as OP did is foolish.
Fortunately reasonable men will usually be aware enough to laugh it off but we are all not reasonable, are we?

when i came home with a bloody nose for the first time at age 11, my dad told me 3 things that i'll never forget...

at the time, they made no sense, but now, i'll use them when my own son gets into his first fight..

1. if someone hits you, hit them back
2. if you think someone is going to hit you, hit them first
3. never get into a fight

blew my mind at 12 years old, but now, it's makes perfect sense...

i don't back down from sunglasses dude. i'm fairly sure my response to 'listen, you call me out like that again, we're going outside, and you're not coming back' is:

'let's go outside, then'

at that point, it's a freeroll.

i take my chances against most people...if he gets me, i call it a loss. if i get him, which i'm fairly sure of at that point, i remind him that he called me out, and if the cops are involved, i'll tell my story..

win/win.

i've said this once or twice on this board, but i'm looking for those kinds of free chances nowadays...i'm 28, 10 years ago, we'd fight over words. now, i'm worried about hurting someone/jail. if i'm convinced i have a reason, we're throwing...

don't let people intimidate you like that..you'll regret it later..

This is pretty close to nailing it on the head for me.

He was steamed to begin with at having been sucked out on.

When you raised him from the button, he thought you were pushing him around. Then you mocked him.

I would go back and apologize to him. Let him know that I thought I was out of line with the sunglasses act and realized later that it had hurt his feelings. Then wait and see if he accepts your apology. If so, you get to continue playing there without feeling afraid. And this type of standing up for yourself will make you feel strong without having to hurt somebody else. If he doesn't accept your apology then it is time to move on, because he would qualify as a psychopath.

The cops being involved is not win/win-both of you will most likely be charged, at least disorderly conduct. Perhaps assault, who knows -depends upon the jurisdiction. If in Vegas, it appears from the happenings of famous people, mercy is not considered to any significant extent.

The idea of ascertaining the first punch is ludicrous unless there are witnesses who will also agree that you had no choice but to respond. Braggadocio is cool on the internet but mostly the "fighters" will fight someone smaller than them but not larger. There are of course exceptions such as Chuck Norris types but they are rare. More than likely, in a big city. if you plan to intimidate and fight the "little guy' be prepared for the knife/gun.

For what it may be worth- the last time I threatened someone I never went back. At least it was a long time. Since they chased him out of the joint I wouldn't sweat it personally. And the apology suggested would probably work if you did see him.

Eh, maybe I'm just too weak for this planet, but I've never been in a fight and don't care to. I'm too pretty. Also, what good can ever come of it? I prefer instead to remove myself from the situation, enjoy happy things instead. Stress and anger, ugh.

Anyway, I've been threatened in a cardroom plenty of times. I've had knives drawn on me a couple of times, I've been grabbed and pushed. One person in particular repeatedly indicates he wants me to choke to death on my own tongue. Good times.
