Official HULA Rules/Sign Up

Since there is a lot of interest it makes sense to start a sign up sheet immediately. This will be the thread for sign ups.

From now on MHSH will be the official thread for HULA and i'll cross post important updates in SSSH. Mods, you can lock the other interest threads I created so not to clog the boards.

If you guys already expressed interest you still HAVE TO SIGN UP AGAIN on this thread...this way everything is in one place.

Since no one has spoken against me being commissioner then I’ll continue with the responsibility. If, in the future, people want someone else to step in as commish then I’ll step down.

I have put together some unofficial rules that have some changes from previous HULA’s. If you want to change something then make your voice heard. If you just sign up then you are agreeing to the rules that are set. I am open to suggestions while the sign ups are taking place, but after the draft the rules are final.

Entry
- If you with to participate you must sign up in this thread. In about one week from today the list will be closed and the captains will hold a draft.
- There will be a $300 dollar entry fee. $200 of this will go towards the prize pool, and $100 of this will go back to each player after they have completed all their matches. If a player does not complete his or her matches then the $100 will be given to the winning team
- Captains will receive 5% rake from each player on the team. Therefore, the captains will receive 120% of the individual prize payout and other players receive 95%.

Draft
- There will be five teams consisting of a captain and four other players.
- Captains will be picked from whomever volunteers to take this position.
- The draft will take place in an AIM chat room.

Season
- Each team has a week to play the other. At the end of the week if there are unfinished matches you have 24 hours to get me e-mailed proof you tried to contact your competition at least two times. If proof is shown, your opponent has 48 hrs to make up the match or else they forfeit. If both players agree to an extension, then this must be played within five days of the end of your scheduled week (so then you have a total of twelve days to play your match instead of seven). Extensions will only be granted by me if I see an e-mail from each player before the week is over. If any match goes past the deadline and there is not specific blame on any one party the entire match is void. There will be no exceptions to this rule
- The season will last for four weeks
- At the end of the season there will be a seven days rest period to clean up outstanding matches.
- The two teams with the best overall records go to the playoffs. In case of a tie, individual wins from all the matches will be added together with the team showing the most wins moving to the playoffs. If there is still a tie, the two captains of the tied teams will pick two other players and play a three game match in the bye week before the playoffs.

Playoffs
- The teams will have one week to play matches in the same format of the regular season.

Payouts
- 75% of the total prize pool goes to first place
- 25% of the total prize pool goes to second place
- The individual $100 per person will be returned after the playoffs have ended. Surfbullet has agreed to hold the money during the season.

These rules will be enforced. This is a big commitment, so don’t sign up if you’re not going to be able to handle playing all your matches

People have suggested that the commissioner take a small fee for the work. Since I set this up, agreed to take this responsibility, and set the rules, I feel silly saying the commissioner will take x% as a fee. I’ll leave that if people think I do a good job at the end, then tips are always welcome. This way you guys aren’t paying a fee for someone doing a bad job in the position.

If there are any rules I left out now is the time to speak.

Sign ups close Sunday, March 12th at 11:59pm PACIFIC TIME. The draft will take place either the following Monday or Tuesday.

I'm in.

As an FYI, I'll be gone March 9th-20th for the Party Cruise. After that, I'll be traveling a lot but I'll be back in town at least one day a week, so I can play my matches.

This will quite likely be pretty common. I'm sure something can be worked out.

Also, 30BB is pretty low for a HU...this is like 3 big hands.

I would vote to make it 50BB at least.

Hey Perseus,

I'm interested.

In previous HULAs each team picked an alternate, in case one of the regular players for the week had other obligations - I think it would make sense to continue the "alternate" policy so that each team is 1 captain, 4 players, and 1 alt.

I may be traveling during the playoffs week, but that can be dealt with when the time arises.

Edit: I'll be a captain, if need be.

It doesn't sound like much, and many matches are 1 sided slaughters b/c of the nature of variance...but you'd be surprised how long it can take sometimes. There were a not-insignificant amount of matches that took hours and hours before the "stakes double after 1 hour" rule was implemented.

Out of all my matches for HULA ML last year, not one finished within the first hour.

There will be a few cut short early, but even with 30BB's some can go on for 2+ hours.

With 50BB's they can take go marathon type length, so I'd like to keep it at 30BB's.

We will start the season after the 19th of march to accomidate people going on the cruise.

The draft will still be held early next week, so if you are cruising then you can't be a captain.

Can we get some clarification about just how many matches will be going down here? I didn't participate in HULA the last time, so you'll have to forgive my n00bishness. I actually have a bunch of questions.

When one team plays another, is it that each team member plays one person from the other team, and then the combined record of the team determines wins and losses, or do team members play multiple matches? Each team will eventually play each other team? Since you're proposing 5 teams, does that mean each team will have an off week, or should we have a 6th team so that everyone plays every week? How do we determine the draft order? Are we having alternates? Do they still have to pay the full entry fee? Do they get a cut of the prizes? How do we determine who plays who in a given match? Is it captain v. captain, 1st draft v. 1st draft, etc., is it random, or is it something else?

You are absolutely correct. I made a fundamental error in my earlier post.

There will be SIX teams, not five. The season will still last five weeks. There will be a few days break, and then the playoffs will last one week max.

So, a total of 6-7 weeks to complete everything and distribute prizes.

The schedule will look like

Week 1
Team 1 vs. Team 2
Team 3 vs. Team 4
Team 6 vs. Team 5

Week 2
Team 3 vs. Team 1
Team 2 vs. Team 5
Team 4 vs. Team 6

Week 3
Team 1 vs. Team 4
Team 2 vs. Team 6
Team 5 vs. Team 3

Week 4
Team 5 vs. Team 1
Team 4 vs. Team 2
Team 6 vs. Team 3

Week 5
Team 1 vs. Team 6
Team 2 vs. Team 3
Team 4 vs. Team 5

For matches...

Each person on the home team, or the team on the right, is matched up by the captain with a member of the opposing team. For weeks 1-4 each team should have two home matches and two away matches. Since we have an odd number of weeks, the home team in week five will be whatever team has more individual wins entering that particular week.

For the playoffs, the home team will again be the team with more individual wins.

The captains will always play each other, but other than that the playing order is determined by the home team captain.

I haven’t decided exactly how to do the draft order, but I'm thinking it will be random with the person picking first in the first round picking last in the second...you guys know the drill.

I'd like to have alternates as a few before have suggested, but the problem is if someone drops out halfway through and another signs up...how much does he owe? What we could do is have six person teams but the captain only picks five per week to play (captains of the 'visiting' determine which five of their guys will play before they are matched up by the captain of the 'home' team). In fact, as I'm writing this I like this idea more than alternates because then if there is an emergency for an individual player no one will get screwed/be worried about what they owe or get paid. So if no one objects I say we have a captain and five other players, but only a total of five players will be played each week. Captains - if you make sure everyone gets a fair shot at playing time there shouldn't be any problem...I think the easiest way would be to try and have everyone sit out one week during the season. Captains have the option of sitting out one week max if they wish.

Good questions, I hope I clarified things a bit.

Re: Official HULA Rules/Sign Up

Here are some more important questions:

(1) Who will be doing the draft-day commentary?
(2) Will people not drafted be able to play in a second-tier tournmanent, like the NIT?
(3) If I actually get drafted, but don't like my team, can I force a trade somewhere else, by acting like a selfish three-year old?
(4) Will there be endorsement deals for the lucky first-round draft picks?

Re: Official HULA Rules/Sign Up

OK, I'm going to type things out here to make sure I have things straight.

Looks like everyone who enters should plan on playing 5 matches of 30 BB, 6 if you make the playoffs. However, if each team consists 6 people, then you will probably be looking at 4-5 matches. This seems like a pretty reasonable commitment. At this point, then, each captain drafts 5 full members rather than having any alternate monkey business?

Where are matches to be played? Stars 2c/4c?

I think you can count me in, then. Good thing I've had a fair bit of practice recently playing HU w/ the Micro and SSSH guys.

Edit: If I don't get drafted, I'd be willing to organize a smaller scale tourney (either $50 buy in with $25 returned or $100 buy in with $50 returned) for whoever else doesn't make the grade.

Re: Official HULA Rules/Sign Up

Yeap you got it.

Looks like we'll just go with the extra player rather than the alternate nonsense.

Last time I played half my matches at stars and half at Royal Vegas play money. This is up to the individual players for each match. Gaming Club is another popular choice, but for some reason I can't get that site to work on my computer

Maybe push everything back a week because of the ppm cruise?

I'm not sure how many people are going on that but it seems like a number of them.

Don't do it for me though as I probably wont take part...just food for thought.

Say, you had mentioned something earlier about the blinds doubling after a set amount of time. How would that work on stars 2c/4c? You just stop and rebuy for half your current stack? Is this still the plan?
