Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

First off, I would’ve posted this in CTH but I figure there are more people here that want to make a quick 50$.
Anyways, I just bought an alienware m9750, and it is going to arrive next week. I'm going to be using it for gaming, music, and a ton of poker of course. (mostly 5/10nl HU) There are a lot of things right now that I'm not happy with in terms of my "setup" on this computer. I've been spending way too much time surfing the web comparing different products and joining random forums instead of playing poker.

So, I'll give 50$ to whoever best answers my questions, and if they do an excellent job I will give an additional 50$. If I see a reply with a suggestion for one or two items on the list and I decide that it is an excellent suggestion I’ll ship 10$ your way. If people don't believe me or something, I'll ship to a reputable poster I guess. I have Full Tilt and UB money right now.

Ok, here we go.

I currently use an iPod and iTunes. I am looking for higher quality music, I've got the money to buy CD's and burn them onto my computer if this is the best option. A suggestion for a good CD purchasing site is needed as well. Recommendations for certain "lossless" programs as well as what basic music media center I should be using are appreciated. I have heard good things about Rhapsody, especially it being compatible with some of the better decoding programs. Also, I currently have a pair of Shure SLK4's (~350$, in-ear headphones) and I also want to buy a pair or regular headphones, and am willing to spend quite a bit on them. What should my complete music "setup" be?

Next, I am thinking about getting a TV tuner for my new laptop. I want to be able to watch TV on it, and I've seen these tuners going for anywhere from 50-150$. Is there any way I can get a PCI card and install it myself? Or do I have to go with one of the USB cards, or something like that. What's my best bet?

I've been getting into mixing a little bit, strictly recreationally. What DAW (digital audio workstation) is best for someone who just likes to mess around with one?

I got Windows Vista Ultimate on my Alienware. Recommended by a few friends. What can I do with ultimate? Where can I learn more about its nuances?

I need a new mouse, last one broke. I’ve been looking at the Logitech MX Air. So I need recommendations for this as well.

Computer speakers. I haven’t even looked into different brands, but again am willing to pay for a good set.

Anything else you recommend for me to do/get for my computer, please let me know.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

I'm not sure what you all want, you want basically every accessory for your computer?

For music - try Rhapsody or music.yahoo.com (emusic.com is good too)

TV tuners here - http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...asp?CatId=1427

DAW - MixPad audio mixer is what I use.

No clue about Vista Ultimate..Vista itself is crap IMO.

Mouse - any wireless optical Logitech is by far the best there is. Been using Logitech for years and will continue doing so.

Speakers - Altec Lansing are what I use.

Hope this helps and/or is what ya wanted.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

Im too lazy to read all that and use my free time to advice you but that mouse thing catched my eye. I recommend razer mouses. I've used about 5 different "hi tech" mouses during last years and since I moved to razer theres no turning back. They are comfortable to use, they look good and are simply amazing.

Right now I have razer pro|solutions 1.6. It's great but the side buttons could be better.

Check these razer gaming mouses: http://www.razerzone.com/index.php?m...amp;cPath=2_17

Although they are designed for gamers, theyre not like logitech gaming mouses with tons of buttons and support for counter strike etc but just a mouse with side buttons and great controllability and accuracy.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

Buy CDs.

If there's a 1990 version that you can get used, and a 2004 version that is "re-released"(Note: Not remastered) get the 1990 version.(Loudness wars make newer cds sound worse than older ones)

Anyways. You can rip to Apple Lossless. I'd rather just rip to .wav because storage is extremely cheap nowadays and a 750GB drive is like $300 or something. From there you can put your music on your Ipod in Apple Lossless quite easily.

I say for a second pair of headphones go with Sennheiser HD600s or HD650s. You can get the 650s used for less than the price of the 600s new ($300ish) It depends on what kind of music you're in to.

What's your Ipod like now?

Good luck ever having money again EVER now.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

I mainly listen to classical music (yea yea i know) so sound quality is obviously pretty important. I suggest:

1 - If you want good sound quality, probably the simplest thing to do would be to stick with itunes and mp3's, but up the bitrate to at least 320kps. I tested this against flac encoding, using a pair of etymotic ER4p's (which are excellent by the way) and couldnt tell the difference.

2 - I love my Logitech MX revolution. Highly recommended.

3 - Speakers - for under 500, and assuming you want 5.1, the Klipsch promedias are by some margin the best. If you want audiophile quality and don't care about surround sound then they're not a good choice thopugh (to be fair, neither would any gaming speakers, the klipsch are the best of that lot)

3 - Laptop - get a 'cool pad' to slot in underneath it. Newegg sell them and theyre an excellent idea.

Itunes/mp3s @ 320kbps versus CD/flac is completely unimportant unless possibly the rest of your setup is worldclass (and I mean worldclass).

Those in-ear earphones seem very fine. Next step is a good DAC and a good AMP. What do you have now?

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

If you are properly into gaming (fps mainly, some fast paced rpg's) then you should stay well clear of wireless mice. The reason for this is that the wireless transmitter can only update mouse movements at 125hz, whereas most decent wired gaming mice (i.e. logitech mx518) can have the usb port overclocked to give a refresh rate as high as 1000hz. You might think that 125hz is by far enough but trust me as a serious fps gamer there is a HUGE amount of difference between the two and you'll notice the difference almost immediately. I would suggest looking at http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679 for a very comprehensive review of all gaming mice as of last christmas. There have been little to no advances over the last year so it should be up to date still. It might not be as balla as your $100 Logitech mx revolution mouse but the mx518 still > all other mice imo

chopsticks- I have never owned a razer mouse but have heard about them. How are they quality-wise vs. Logitech mice? The simplicity is certainly nice but since I will be doing more than just gaming, would going with a Logitech be smarter?

Strictly- Apple Lossless and CD's? FLAC encoding is not supported by iTunes, correct? And for higher quality CD's, where's the best place to look? Interesting tidbit on 90's CD's being of higher quality.

I've got an iPod nano 8gb and an iPod Touch 16gb. I've heard great things about those Sennheiser's. I'm mostly into classic rock music, with a bit of hip-hop and rap. And thanks for the forum link.

Arp220- Upping the bitrate to 320kbps- what are you using to do this, apple lossless? Also, I'm evenly split in desiring surround-sound and audiophile quality in terms of my speakers, FWIW.

Ajahn- You're saying the difference between the two is very minimal, correct? My setup is by no means world-class, as this price jump is not within my budget. Recommendations for a good DAC and AMP?

pbx- I realize cordless mouses are pretty much out of the question for gaming but I didn't realize there was this much of a difference, thank you for clearing this up. Thanks for the linky, saw it last week and it's a great review of the top gaming mice.

I use AAC and set it to 320 manually

To do this, go to: edit -> preferences, select the advanced tab then the importing subtab. select 'AAC' under 'import using', then select 'custom' from the menu below it and choose 320kps.

As far as speakers go - the klipsch 5.1s are excellent, and unless you're a REALLY serious audiophile, will sound just fine. In essence theyre the best choice by far if you want surround sound speakers that also sound good for music. I suggest avoiding logitech and soundblaster 5.1 speaker sets like the plague...

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

I'll try my best to answer these questions for you. Here we go!

I haven't had too much experience far from the ipod and itunes combination, but while I have purchased music from itunes I still find myself downloading higher quality music from limeware. It seems this isn't really an option for you so if not, I apologize. Right now that is what I have had the most success with. For headphones I suggest the Bose headphones below. These things are awesome and have an on-ear and over-ear version. The links are here:

http://www.bose.com/controller?event...adphones_index

http://www.bose.com/controller?event...adphones_index

I have the quiet comfort 2's and I wouldn't replace these things for anything in the world. They are amazing, period.

Here is a PCMCIA tv tuner card that should work well for you
http://sewelldirect.com/TV-Tuner-Vid...ard-PCMCIA.asp

Honestly I don't know a thing about DAW's or mixing so I will leave this one to someone else.

Windows Vista ultimate is pretty much a conglomeration of the Basic, Home Premium and Business edition. It will be able to use each and every feature of Vista (like the media center, which isn't in the Business edition but is in premium home, etc.) The only feature it has that none of the others do is a date encryption feature called "BitLocker" this will prevent, if used correctly, common fears of data theft and computer theft (the wrong people getting your information).

Mice: Logitech mice obviously own the market right now. These mice are great! If you want a wireless I strongly suggest the MX Revolution http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mi.../130&cl=us,en

For a wire mouse I suggest http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mi.../135&cl=us,en
or
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mi.../187&cl=us,en
All of these mice fit comfortably in your hand and it's like they aren't even there when you are using them...

Speakers. No question for me, Logitech's Z-5500
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/sp.../224&cl=us,en

These things are sick. My friend purchased these after seeing that I had the older version (5330e). These things pump more than some car systems that my friends have tried putting together. It's unbelievable.

Lastly, my bonus setup suggestion is a new chair. These ergonomic ones are fantastic, you lean back in these things and could fall asleep. http://www.officechairstation.com/Ai...t-Platinum.htm

There is an example. If you haven't tried anything like this then I suggest going to an office store and doing so. If you like it, snag it up.

That is all good luck and I hope I helped you out a bit.

You'll fall out of your seat when you hear the potential of a decent mp3 of a good recording on a worldclass system.

I usually just chuckle when I hear noobs with stupid gear talking about mp3 vs CD; they have no clue just how audio-degrading their gear is. It's quite bizarre actually because they claim to have a good ear for these things yet they are utterly unable to recognize fundamental flaws in the rest of their system.

Anyway,

Some sick, worldclass, DACs:

http://sakurasystems.com/products/shigadac.html
Listed for $1500 USD.

It requires a solid SPDIF output from CD-player or computer. There are a number of cheap audio-cards who have mostly untouched - clean - SPDIF outputs. I use an EMU 0404 audiocard for this end.

OR

http://www.scott-nixon.com/dac.htm
These the latest hot stuff from the DIY community; prebuilt and decent price. The newest ones take USB output and thus bypass even a soundcard.

Some sick, worldclass, AMPs:

http://sakurasystems.com/products/shigaamp.html
Listed for $2K USD.

http://www.customanalogue.com/jlti_mark_2.htm
Listed for $3K Australian dollar.

I really have no experience with headphone amplifiers so I can't comment on that. I could recommend you on speakers to go along with the aforementioned stuff though.

It has been said that razers are the best choice when it comes to price/quality ratio and theyve also had great results in reviews. If you've got used to logitech it could be the best choice for you. I have used so many brands that I hadnt gotten used to any certain type of mouse and moving to razers was easy.

About the simplicity, dont confuse razers as simple mouses. My pro|solutions 1.6 is very simple mouse since its made for graphical designers who dont need too many functions in one mouse. Check out the gaming series (which i linked), there are tons of options and some of the models are built with lots of buttons which are freely adjustable to do whatever you want.

Go to your local computer shop and try different mouses and compare logitech vs razer. I did this too and almost bought another logitech as my previous mouse was logitech too until I noticed razers on display and I'm going to use these for undefined amount of time now.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

Music:

I'm not sure what your musical tastes are, but if you're interested in high quality legal downloads, http://www.bleep.com/ sells individual songs and full albums encoded at 320kbps (very high quality) in mp3 format and without DRM (i.e. you're not limited as to what you can do with the tracks you buy). I've only actually purchased one album from them so far, but was pleased with all aspects of their service.

As for CDs, http://www.cduniverse.com/ is probably one of the better online retailers.

If I could afford it, I'd buy a pair of high-end Sennheiser headphones: http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...hones_high-end

As for TV tuners, since it's for a laptop you'll have to go with an external unit, only possible issue I can see here is if your laptop is old and only has a USB 1.1 port (unlikely).

I'm by no means an expert on audio mixing, so I don't know if it will be too basic for the stuff you want to do, but http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is a nice piece of open-source audio editing and mixing software. As I said, I've only used it for very basic procedures, but it's worth a look.

I think this was already mentioned, but if you plan on any fast-paced gaming it's best to go with a corded mouse (better response time). Logitech is a good brand, I use an old MX518. I'd probably go with one of their laser mice, perhaps a G5: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/mi...5&cl=us,en

Speakers, Altec Lansing is a good solid brand. One recommendation is, if you're considering a surround system, make sure that a) you'll be able to set them up effectively (I have plenty of space, but the layout of my computer room means that there's really no good place for the rear speakers), and b) you wouldn't be better off getting a higher-end stereo setup for the same price.

Hope some of that helped.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

If you're really into music you should look at getting some of the following things:

1. A Squeezebox - this is similar to a Slingbox but works for music. Essentially, you store all your music on a network drive, and the Squeezebox uses the wireless network to play said music through your sound system. http://www.slimdevices.com/ Squeezebox also has the advantage that it's easy to integrate with online radio stations and sites like Pandora.

2. Get a Valve Amplifier. Seriously. They don't have to be expensive, and while valves do burn out after ~10k hours of use, they're mostly very easy to replace - you can search for sellers on ebay and often there are huge amounts of very high quality military surplus valves going around. This site - http://www.iconaudio.co.uk/products.htm - should give you an idea of prices; they're in £s, so double them.

3. Speakers. Important, obviously. This site http://www.roadsters.com/speakers/#Intro has a listing of many high-end audio manufacturers and should be a good indication of the sort of thing you'd like to buy.

So get all those things, hook them up with your computer and wireless network and you can have an extremely high quality audio setup. These things don't have to be incredibly expensive either. Total cost for a decent valve amp and speaker system will be in the ~$4k range. Also, valve amplifiers look incredible and will without a doubt be the sexiest piece of hardware you can own.

Hope that helps with the high-quality music/ speakers part of your problem.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

Take a handful of your favourite LPs and/or CDs - and your iPod - to a decent hi-fi shop. They'll happily set various source/amp/speaker combos up for you in a listening room, including stuff that integrates with a PC (hi-fi has finally got used to music collections being on hard drives).

Everyone's ears and preferences are different and I cannot over-recommend an afternoon of testing. 'Proper' hi-fi shops practically insist on it.

Ultimately, if it sounds better, it is better. And yours is the only opinion that matters.

(This may be the start of an impossible - and expensive - obsession, you have been warned... )

I'm very impressed with what I am seeing so far. None worthy of a full hundred, but I've narrowed the 50$ winner to a few, and more people than I thought are worthy of 10$. If I don't find a few more awesome replies in the next couple hours I am going to give the winner 50$, second place 25$, and a bunch of people 10$. Here's what I am thinking so far:

Music: iPod/iTunes w/ AAC upped to 320kbps (ty Arp220), and a pair of Sennheiser's, not exactly which pair. Remember, links help me a lot, show me the exact product you reccomend. Gerald- more information on valve amplifiers please? I'm intrigued.

TV Tuner: Poker????, thank you for clearing up the fact that I cannot purchase a PCI tuner, this is helpful. This is probably my best bet: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815100022 but please let me know if you recomend something else over this one.

For DAW's Precise you seem pretty confident that Pro Tools is my best bet. Anyone care to challenge this notion? Is this the best option for recreational use?

Vista Ultimate- so far one of the only things I've learned is that the main difference is the security feature, which is good for poker among other things I'm assuming.

New mouse- seems like the consensus is the Logitech line. I've heard good things about razers but for now I think Logitech may be my best bet.

Speakers- my speaker setup is nonexistent, set aside a Klipsch iPod dock purchased about a year and a half ago. It's certainly a good product, but I am definitely looking for something bigger and better. Gerald, good suggestion with the Valve amplifier, again I am interested, but do not know much on the subject. Also, thanks for the link, but I do not really know where to start; upon opening it I am presented with a hundred or so links to speaker retailers. Suggestions in this respect again are needed.

So right now I'm thinking I am going to give one 50$ prize, a 25$ prize, and somewhere in the range of 5-10 10$ prizes.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

Well, I'll give a short little 'speech' on Vista Ultimate.

It's completely useless. No where near are 3/4 of the bugs even knowledged, let alone fixed, and is not much of an update from XP (Service Pack 2). The only better thing is that it improves security wise a little bit by having less internal crashes - that's the only fix security wise. Vista has the possibility to become a great OS, but right now Microsoft hasn't even began to implement alot of the features they could to make it worthwhile to upgrade with. The only good thing about Ultimate is that it includes all the other versions of Vista out right now (like 5 of them I think) so you do get a pretty good deal on that.

As said, Vista is pretty useless. I don't plan on upgrading for atleast a few months when they finally implement the stuff making it worthwhile to update.

There's my piece on Vista hehe.

headphones id go with sennheiser HD 600s. http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite...transid=004465 you can find them cheaper off ebay or a different site but they are really worth it. they are durable ive had mine for years and they don't have a stratch.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

im guessing if your giving $100 away then your kinda rich so I'll tell you what you should do if your super rich

CD to Wav uncompressed: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/

Flac is a losless format, but iPods don't support them. My advice, go for 320kbps mp3s. I can hear the difference JUST between 256kbps mp3 and wav SOMETIMES but rarely. 320kbps is overkill. 320kbps to my ears through my system is as good as CD quality and no one I've met can tell the difference between the two.

If money is no budget for headphones, and you want the BEST, go for UE11 pros. These are *THE* balla IEMs. You can also get custom art on them for $50.
http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimat...escription.php
Each IEM is quad driver, but youll need to go to an ear specialist to get moulds of your ears. They will set you back ~$1.2k but IMO opinion its worth it. iPods drive these headphones perfectly. Don't listen to anyone saying that ipods are sucky quality, they are not, those are just goons who put 128kbps mp3s on it and hook it up to a semi decent hi fi and complain about it.
http://cimg2.163.com/catchpic/8/84/8...E53F8CEA21.jpg

For indoor headphones, go for Sennheisser HD650's. These will cost around $400 but are considered some of the best open headphones you can buy. My pair has lasted for years and is superb. If you want to hook it up to your ipod though, you will need a portable headphone amp as these headphones need some power to drive them.

Also, IMO DONT buy pc speakers if you like good quality music. Buy a decent seperates sytem and hook it up. Also get a decent soundcard, it removes electrical interference from your computer and provides much better sound. The emu1820 soundcard is superb, and also has lots of plugs to plug in studio things if you get into that, as well as mic slots.
http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp?product=9871
If you want a soundcard for gaming though, the creative X-fi soundcard http://www.soundblaster.com/products/x-fi/ is meant to be one of the best, BUT for music playback I've heard getting a different one is a better option. Also it's marketting flat out lies "better than mp3 quality music playback" is just bs, data lost is data lost etc it just eq's it tis all.

A decent seperates system costs anywhere from $1,000 to unlimited really, but that's a whole different ball park. For $1k you will get a good pair of real speakers and an integreated amp. If you want advice on a decent hi fi send me a pm or something, I've owned a few and have listened to many, my current setup cost me around £5k (~$10k) and is fantastic, best thing I ever owned.

Also on the headphones side of things, I really would recommend HD650's over Bose QC's. But sound is very subjective, you really need to go to a store and try both for yourself.

I've spent many an hour on http://www.head-fi.org/ which is a forum all for headphones, I recommend you go and read some reviews on any headphone you want to buy.

Listing to music on your computer, Winamp with the MD3 skin is pretty easy to use. Software for playback isn't really important, it's all about which is easiest to you to use but just make sure it doesn't do anything crappy to the sound like EQ it weirdly as some super sound setting or something.

Ok, I'm happy with what I have here so I am going to announce the winners. PM me your account name (I have very little on FTP, if you have UB please give me your screen name and first name on that account)

Trufeelings521- 50$ First post was lengthy and informative, with multiple replies about other suggestions.

Gullanian- 25$ Definitely some informative stuff. As you said, I would like some advice on a hi-fi setup. I know of and have heard some sick setups, knew someone with a ~25k setup who told me it was "entry level". It sounded amazing but I doubt I was even in a position to really appreciate the difference.

Arp220- 10$ A close third. Thanks for your advice on various high quality music options.

poker????- 10$ Some good stuff, thank you for the clarification on the TV tuner, CD site recommendation, as well as mouse and speaker reccomendations.

Ajahn- 10$ Thanks for the info. on high quality AMP and DAC's.

GeraldGiraffe- 10$ Good stuff, I will be looking into getting a Valve Amplifier.

Again, just PM me your UB account name and first name associated with that account. Thanks guys, appreciated the help.

Re: Help me buy things- win up to 100$!

This thread got retarded the second someone wrote the word Bose.

Just go to Head-Fi and read around some, get an account, and search for good threads. Your questions are reasonably basic and have been asked hundreds of times. 2p2 is not the place to get this kind of advice.
