Emo Concert Trip Report

I got to the show at the San Jose Event Center halfway through Thrice's set; I arrived at like 8:40 for a 7:30 show, but apparently I overestimated the amount of time that the crappy opening band (mewithoutYou) would be playing. Thrice was pretty cool, I don't know much of their music that wasn't on Vheissu but they put on a pretty good show for what I saw of it. They closed with "The Earth Will Shake" which is an awesome song.

Took like 30 mins to set up Brand New's set (long time imo). They open with "Not The Sun", which is kinda a weird choice as it's one of the worse songs on their new album, but ok. They then play "The Archer's Bows Are Breaking" (again, lesser quality), "You Won't Know", "Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don't" (from last album), and "Sowing Season." It's around this point that I start to notice a lack of energy from both the band and the crowd; it's like the volume's only at "8" when it clearly should be at "11." Then Jesse (lead singer) randomly launches into emo acoustic mode and puts all of us to sleep with like 3-4 acoustic songs in a row: "Luca", "Handcuffs", "Play Crack the Sky" (from last album), and he finally breaks out of it with "Limousine." Then they finally get to some of the good songs from their new album and play "Millstone", "Degausser", and "Jesus Christ", at which point they exit the stage.

If you are a big emo fan, you may notice that they have not yet played "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows", and I'm fairly sure that song is the only reason why they even have millions of emo [censored] cutting themselves to their music across the nation to begin with. Furthermore, everyone in the crowd has been yelling at random intervals for them to play "Seventy Times 7" off their first CD, and given that they're halfway through their tour and residents of San Jose aren't particularly inventive, I'm inclined to think they've been hearing this for awhile. So, they couldn't possibly be done, right?

Yeah, here they come after a few mins, just the guitarist at first and he starts riffing and then the singer comes back and they all jam for a bit and...then they leave the stage again. And don't come back. HI GUYS, YOU'RE AN EMO BAND, TRY LEAVING THE JAM SESSION FOR PPL THAT ARE ACTUALLY TALENTED MUSICIANS. Not to mention that they don't even play two of their most popular songs and didn't play anything off their first CD (they only have three, I mean, it's not like their compendium of songs is so huge they have to ignore an album or two). Not to mention that crowd energy was totally lacking, and that in their heaviest songs (Degausser, Sowing Season, You Won't Know, the end of Luca) something just feels missing, and I'd almost rather be listening to it in my car.

Then I sat in my car for about 20 mins trapped by a car waiting in the aisle to get into the main road out because traffic was completely stuck. The car next to mine (with one empty space between us) had a couple cute-ish girls that may or may not have been in high school, and I had just about decided whether or not I was gonna to talk to them when traffic got moving again.

So yeah, disappointment. Also, lol emo high school kids, they're everywhere.

Listen to any Silverstein goofyballer? One of my favorite bands, they're more like Emo Punk/Emo Hardcore, whatever you wanna call it.

LOL at that collection of bands on tour together.

Henry Rollins-style spoken word vocalist
Screamo
Awesome band moving into melodic stage

Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

Also, lol at my first time seeing Thrice's lead singer. Definitely not what you'd expect.

I saw thrice in SF in 2003 right after the Angels beat the Giants in the world series. They were wearing angels stuff so i went up on the balcony and threw m&ms at them.

Re: Emo Concert Trip Report

i saw them too at the hammersmith apollo in london in janurary.

sounds like they didn't play a great set list goofy. When i saw them they played '70x7' 'jude law' 'shower scene' and 'mix tape' off the first album and every song off deja apart from 'good to know..' which was awesome. they also played a few songs off the new one but i cant remember which.

And ya, there were tons of emo high school kids there. I tried to pull off the whole 'uni dropout/degen who's been into this band for years' vibe but i dont think it worked

Dude leave that kid alone. He is probably going through a hard time in his life where he is afraid. He is searching for himself and doesn't know what to look like. Emo's are the only race that will accept him for who he is. A lost little boy.

Fletch,

I've seen Brand New 3 times and I'm with you, great set lists each time. Sorry they pulled this on you goofy.

Brag: first concert after starting at GT was Brand New, Rufio and Taking Back Sunday in a venue big enough for about 75 people with 120 crammed into it and a "stage" 8 inches off the floor. 2nd best concert to Thursday, Thrice and Coheed.
Beat: also had to unwittingly sit through a mewithoutyou set to see the headliners at a show.

seriously.

I don't like "emo" music. I hate bands like My Chemical Romance or Brand New, but Thrice is one of my top 3 favorite bands.

Too bad they rarely pull it off live.

Re: Emo Concert Trip Report

BN's earlier stuff is def emo, and they've kinda moved away from that style but they're still emo in the sense that Jesse still sings and writes lyrics like he's in an emo band.

Thrice is def not emo, but BN is the headliner of this tour, hence "emo concert." I thought Thrice's set was great from what I saw of it, and they definitely played a decent amount of older stuff, I just didn't recognize a lot of it cause I'm only really familiar with Vheissu. They played "Red Sky", "For Miles", and "The Earth Will Shake" after I got there and all were great (and I think they were playing "Stand And Feel Your Worth" when I arrived). I think they replicate the energy of their music on-stage way better than BN did. I'm not sure if they just played all their popular songs at the start ("Image of the Invisible", "All That's Left", "Stare at the Sun") before I got there or what though.

I saw Taking Back Sunday like 8 months ago and it was better than this but still not great - maybe I'm just getting old and disillusioned with live music? I don't know. I saw Rage Against the Machine after the Battle of Los Angeles came out and no concert has ever come close to that imo.

i think you just have crappy taste in music and might be realizing that

I disagree.

Also, I'm listening to my Thrice collection right now and just realized they played "Silhouette" last night too.

EDIT: "The Artist in the Ambulance" too.

Vheissu is OK, but total crap compared to Artist in the Ambulance or Illusion of Safety. Both of the those records are in my top 20 all time.
