$100 hd-dvd players!!!!

walmart today has $100 toshiba hd-dvd players

best buy has matched that with permanent price drop to $100 for one of its models

we may see mass amounts of sub-100 hd-dvd players this xmas

Re: $100 hd-dvd players!!!!

Man-o-man did those prices ever drop. Blu-ray is still kinda expensive though.

Re: $100 hd-dvd players!!!!

even at $99 it still qualifies for 5 free hd-dvds from a short list (pdf link)

the model has been discontinued. wal-mart did an extreme price drop as part of a one-day sale, and while best buy followed suit they were virtually out of stock already. the prices are good only while supplies last, and i expect that they're already gone nationwide. this is a great deal, but a notable one. don't get your hopes up about this being close to everyday pricing unless toshiba decides to gamble even more. the similar replacement model's regular price is $300.

the best deal on a blu-ray player should be a 40gb ps3 for $300 after kickback at sonystyle.com if they're still running the promotion on their credit card.

Re: $100 hd-dvd players!!!!

Is the reason the prices are dropping on some players because blu-ray is where its going to be at? For me, I'm not sure I want to get an HD player when Fox is with Sony.

How in the world did that joke of an article make the front page of avs? That thing reads literally like an advertisement for blu-ray: [ QUOTE ]
Ultimately, of course, with both hardware and software sales tilting in favor of Blu-ray, it’s hard to imagine Blu-ray losing, especially since Disney is starting to release family friendly titles such as “Cars” and “Ratatouille,” which look fabulous in native 1080p, and other hit titles such as “Meet the Robinsons” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.”

[/ QUOTE ]

Not to mention it's flat out wrong, as the latest NPD numbers put HD-DVD ahead in hardware sales, and this was before the recent price cut(s).

Strange.

Re: $100 hd-dvd players!!!!

if hd-dvd players can be widespread this holiday season around the 100-150 mark, and blu-ray players don't match that, then it could be a tipping point

is there any reason blu-ray can't match that price? is the blu-ray laser much more expensive? ps3 is cheap but sony loses money on that...i don't think i've ever seen a standalone blu-ray player for <$500 before

It is ironic that you point out the first article is biased, and then your article link includes the VP of marketing for Toshiba. Not only that, the data excludes the PS3 because it is not a dedicated piece of hardware.

Do they really think no one who is buying the PS3 for gaming is also using its blu-ray player? Or is it plausible to deny that some people are getting the PS3 because it is almost stupid not to while it is cheaper than a standalone blu-ray player?

NPD is an extremely objective source. The point of the article was verification of NPD numbers. Feel free to find other sources. I can promise you that he was not lying about an easily verificable source. And yes it does exclude PS3. If you include it, it becomes impossible to get any real measurement since you have to basically come up with some magic % of people that bought it more for a blu-ray player than as a gaming system. Toshiba will also be coming out with a line of mid-range laptops that will include HD-DVD drives. These will not be included for the same reasons.

More verifiable numbers: nielsen netratings along with more NPD, from earlier in the year

From Q1->Q2 this year, HD-DVD hardware sales were up 37%, blu-ray were down 27%. HD-DVD software sales were up 20%, blu-ray were down 5%.

Since they can't put a number on it, they just call it zero?

That's wrong, and they are spinning the facts. If they only count about 20% of the PS3's sold, it would beat HD DVD hardware sales. And blu ray software sales are beating HD DVD 2:1 for the first nine months of the year. link

obviously the ps3 movie attach rates are at least 20 percent which means almost a million more people have blu-ray viewing capabilities than hd-dud. if i saw numbers like that id be willing to give away a hddud player for free if u bought 5 movies just to get players out there..who cares how much money i lose in the short term. shoot id also give a main studio 150 million so theyd just sell my type of software....oh snap wait a sec that already happened

Fact 1: HD-DVD is outselling blu-ray for dedicated players.
Fact 2: There have been more PS3s sold than dedicated HD-DVD players.

These are two distinct facts. Nobody is arguing or trying to 'twist' either of them, except you.

I always learn alot from pointless technical debates. Fact research and cross-checking 'points' always helps you learn alot more about a topic especially when you have somebody else just looking for even the smallest mistake in anything you say. This time a year ago I don't believe I even knew what 1080p was; a dozen pointless debates and fanboy threads later and I feel very knowledgable on 1080p, HDMI and just about everything related.
