Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

OK, get off the plane at JFK. Head to taxi line. Cross the street and there's an arrow to the taxi line and a handrail divider thing. As I get closer, I realize there's actually a break in the rail and the line actually snakes around (you can't see this when you first start walking to the line), so you go outside the line thing and around. This is illustrated in the picture below.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...boxer/taxi.jpg

I get in line and right as I'm approaching the curve, a guy walks up. He sees that the line is longer than he thought. He does a quick check and I can tell he's going to try and cut in in the middle. He eyeballs a couple of people who are having none of it, then says something and gives a head nod and slides in front of this woman. The players:

Him (red dot): Young 20ish professional looking dude in nice overcoat and dress shirt w/ bluetooth ear thing.

Her: Youngish professional looking woman, probably a consultant or something.

Behind her: Business suit dude, briefcase/phone/etc.

Then me (blue dot).

In front of me are about 15 people. Behind me are about 20. Cabs are coming at a reasonable pace.

So, question one is, do you say anything? (This won't really impact my wait time in any significant manner, but it cuts his in more than half)

I am annoyed by his little move and the bluetooth, so I say 'Hey man, the line goes around back there.' Guy sort of mumbles something like 'Oh, yeah, sorry.'

So, question two, do you say anything else?

I do.

Me: 'Uh, dude, the back of the line is that way.'
Him: 'Yeah man, but the line should have kept going this way (instead of snaking around) to the end' (HUH!?)
Me: 'Uh, yeah, whatever, it didn't, so the end of the line is right there.'
Him: 'Come on, man, don't make a big deal'
Me: 'Everyone's waiting in line, man.'

At this point, he realizes he isn't getting in a cab in front of me and I'm not going to let up, so he changes strategy.

Him: 'Hey man, look, if it's that big a deal to you, you can go in front of me.'
Me: 'OK, fine, you explain it to these two people in front of me.'
Him: 'OK'

So I walk past the two people in front of me and get in front of him.

Woman: 'Hey, what's going on here?'
Me: 'Well, I'm not letting this guy cut in front of me. You can ask him to go to the back of the line, I'll get back in my place.'
Her: 'Wait, that doesn't... oh never mind.'
Guy behind her: On phone, oblivious to everything

So, question three, do you let him attempt this final move, or do you just yell at one of the taxi line ladies to make him get to the back of the line (they live for opportunities like that).

I had mixed emotions, split between being pissed at this guy for cutting in line and grudging admiration for his persistence and changing strategies.

yes, yes, make him go to the back

This guy is another example of what's wrong with our society in general.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

All,

I sort of regret going in front of him. At that point, I really thought that the woman who initially let him in and the dude in front of me would both be like "WTF!?!?" resulting in him having no choice and me not having to call for the line ladies like a little bitch. But instead, the woman let it go and the business dude was oblivious.

If I had a chance to do it over again, I think I would either at the end just say WTF, no, get to the back of the line OR do the same thing, except then invite people from the back of the line to cut in front of me.

I was surprised by his boldness. Even after me telling him three times to get to the back of the line, he kept trying to negotiate/convince me to let it go.

I wouldn't move.

"It's not a big deal once you go to the back of the line, man, and wait like everyone else.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

I might say something initially if I even notice, but I doubt I persist.

I definitely wouldn't go in front of him though because that doesn't really address the problem. I mean, you're not really all that concerned with the extra 20 seconds it's gonna take to get a cab; you want this guy not to be an inconsiderate douche.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

after he invites you to cut, you should have let everyone get in front of you. that would have been hilarious. generally, in situations like this i say something and try to rally some people behind me. once a few people tell him to move to the back he usually will. if no one else cares i generally give up.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

I don't let stuff like this ride. I understand it's a minor thing, and I shouldn't get worked up about every little thing, but the guy would end up at the back of the line one way or another. The fact that he has a bluetooth on just makes the situation worse.

I've always thought the handling of the line-cutter by Mandy Patinkin's character in Dead Like Me was pretty awesome. Your situation would've been the perfect occasion to use it.

Here's the clip.

Very creative way to move up 2 slots while maintaining the moral high ground. I'll add this move to my repertoire.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

Happened to me waiting for the lines after the Giants destroyed the Eagles on sunday night.

The line for the bus back to Manhattan is long. Like sick long. It goes all the way back around the practice field.

I'm standing next to my brother when this guy just steps up right next to me on his cell phone. He looked like a younger dude and for some reason was now stuck at the game by himself.

I turned to him and said "what are you doing", he mumbled over his words and didn't look away from his phone and I said "listen, the line goes all the way back that way". He gave me some sort of "who cares it's just one person, right?" and i basically told him wrong now get to the end of the line.

People who cut in lines are retarded and often think they shouldn't have to wait. Make them look like an idiot once and they have less of a chance of doing this in the future. For that reason I just tell them to go to the end of the line, I don't care if i look like an [censored].

This depends on my mood. If I'm feeling beligerent I'll do what you did. If I'm tired but I don't want to put up with his crap I'll call one of the taxi ladies. I can never ignore line cutting though. We get a lot of it in Italy, especially from old ladies. I usually win.

There's obviously a ton of liars in this thread, as whenever this happens I'm the only person to ever say anything. I guess everyone is a tough guy on the internet. I bet the actual answer to if you say something in the first place is closer to 7% instead of 70.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

I had a similar situation with an airport security line.

I was on the phone, and some random chick started pushing through everyone and ended up a few spaces in front of me.

So to the person I was talking to on the phone I say, loudly, "Wow, some bitch just cut right past everyone." There were some laughs, and the chick in question turns around and starts to get huffy. To the person on the phone, I say: "Lemme call you back, the dog's barking." This gets more laughs, and the chick now looks irate. I end up asking her why she cut in front of everyone, and she said she was going to miss a flight.

Me: "Oh, when does your plane leave?"
Her: "9:30"
Me: "Mine leaves at 9:20, and I didn't cut in front of everyone."

She went back behind me, but I do not think she went back to the end of the line. Whatever. I made my flight with time to spare.

All,

After I was in front of him, I heard him mutter something to the woman like "Wow, can't believe that guy was such a jerk about that." and she agreed. I considered turning around and explaining to the woman what a bitch she was for letting this dude cut and telling the dude what a [censored] douche he is. But then I realized I was tired and 2 minutes away from getting in a cab, so just let it go. In retrospect, I sort of wish I would have turned around and made a scene.

El D,

As you know, you erred by moving up yourself. You should've insisted he go to the back of the line and, if he refused, come off the top rope and humbled him like in the old country.

If I'm alone, I'm all over this guy. If I was with my family I think I'd let it slide because my wife gets embarrassed when I yell at strangers in public.

Duke,

Awesome, this is how these things should be taken care of. In this situation if someone is actually pressed for time and asks everyone if they can cut I'm fine with it, but just doing it is bs.

LFS,

Honestly, he got me off guard w/ his quick comebacks:

"Oh, uh yeah, whatev, sorry" <expected>
"OK, let it go, man" <expected>
"The line actually should have gone in this direction rather than snaked around" <HUH, WTF? UM, OK WTF IS YOUR POINT?>
"Look, I'll solve your problem, get in front of me" <UH, HMMM, OK I WILL LET OTHERS DEAL WITH IT NOW>

I was really surprised the guy didn't yield after I told him multiple times to go to the end of the line. Most people get embarrassed and just cave after the second time you say something.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

I say something 100% of the time. I basically decide whether I can take the guy or not when deciding how much to push it. Even if it's like 70% he'll kick my ass, I don't care because I lose it. I generally want to smash people's faces in on stuff like this, so if "You're kidding me, right? We are all waiting here and the end of the line is that way." gets a smartass response, I usually escalate it pretty quick.

So my demise will probably be getting shanked by the guy behind me when a new cashier opens and says "next in line please" and he darts.

I am not saying this to be badass. I'm avg or so in that department. It's just some young suit believing his time is more valuable than mine (others) pretty much makes me batshit loco. Regardless, it needs to be loud and embarrassing for anyone who does that [censored]. Maybe make up a Ballad of the Linebreaker song and sing it...mentioning the bluetooth of course.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

Recently at Costco a middle-aged woman approached me as I reached the register after waiting in a long-ass line. She had one item and asked to go ahead of me (the line behind me was still long as [censored]). I was like "It's not up to me to make the decision for everybody in this line. You get permission from every single person in line behind me and I'll let you go ahead of me. I can't make decisions for everyone else." She said "You can make decisions for yourself, though, can't you?" I said "Ma'am, I'm not going to argue with you, you should really just move along now." She called me an [censored], and it made my day.

Re: Line cutting scenario (long + polls + MSPaint)

El D,
I wouldn't say something cause I'm a pussy, but once you say something, you have to follow up and you can't just step in front of him. That makes no sense and it could end up making you look bad.

TiK,
I really have no problem with someone joining up with a friend in a line unless it's a really slow moving line. It's really awkward to stand in line a few spaces back from someone you know and be out of talking range but clearly visible.
