Does my land lord have the right to unplug my internet?

I am a college student at UCSD. I live in a house with two older people. My families house burned down in the California fires this week and they came to stay here, they had a dispute with the people I live with(land lords) and are now gone. It look like I am going to have to move over this. Today, the land lords unplugged my internet to punish me for my parents behavior, but told me he did it because we are on the same router and he doesn't want me interfeering with his work when he uses the internet... We agreed that internet would be included in my untilities. Is he allowed to do this? Don't I have tenates rights? Please help.

Is this almost unreadable, or am I drunker then I thought?

Is one of the older roommates also your landlord?

Did your family get in trouble for doing bad things on the internet?

I just want to know if my landlord has the right to take away something included in my utilities bill.

1. No you do not have tenates rights.

2. WTF, your family must be stupid.

Unless he has something in the lease where he's said he can punish you by taking away your inet he can't just do that.

Tell him to turn it back on and if he doesn't you will get your own inet service and deduct that from your rent.

What's the whole story? What did your parents do? Why is everyone either running away or being a douche when you helped your parents out at a time like this?

edit: I'm assuming what you said is true about inet being considered included in your rent.

Zerander,

The answer is yes. In fact, he can double your utility bill, stop providing those utilities, and help himself to whatever is in your fridge or wallet. are you this dumb?

Zerander - I am going to educate you on the internet.

You come to us with a boring request for advice. You also tantalize with some backstory that you neglect to tell us. This ignores the fundamental exchange that is expected. You entertain us, we help you out.

So what did your parents do to piss off the landlord?

Did you agree in writing? Is it on the lease?

It's hard to say without the back story of how bad whatever you family did. My guess is that he doesn't have a right to take away internet (not a lawyer), but he might be able to evict you instead.

I guess you're joking but you're pretty much right. There's basically zero punishment for landlords that break the law. All you can hope for is to move out and not have to pay a penalty, and of course you incur all the time and dollar cost of moving.

Woman lived in a unit for 1.5 years for free and judges would never evict her because she was perpetually pregnant.

Health department and city threatening me with prosecution because of vermin problem - rent collection and eviction impossible until that is cleared up - meanwhile tenants in one unit have the floor covered in chicken bones.

Man breaks down door because he locks himself out and calls health department to complain about broken door.

People leave shower on for weeks destroying bathroom and causing outrageous water bill.

Tenants pull ceiling down on themselves and sue for injury - no case, no real injury - doesn't matter because insurance companies just settle.

That's just some of what happened to me. Tenants screw over landlords about a million times more than the other way around and there are plenty of laws governing landlords and lots of punishments and in a lot of places under a lot of circumstances landlords will have to pay relocation fees. Some other property owners I knew had a policy to just pay tenants off up to $5k to move out without a fuss.

No, he can't take away a service listed in your contract. This is California, you have rights. I can't help you more until you tell the story, though.

Re: Does my land lord have the right to unplug my internet?

If he shut off your internet, you should shut off his!

Either disconnect his cable on the outside of the house or busybox his telephone line (depending on whether he has cable or DSL).

This is the proper response.

i want to know the story of what the hell someone has to do when fleeing fires to make their son's landlord want to evict him.

maybe it's a little different here in australia, but i think that if your house burns down, people may be slightly more forgiving than normal.

The guy who runs the housing law clinic at my school said that they offer this up often, because paying the tenant a few thousand bucks to leave immediately is cheaper than going through the courts. He said a lot of the time the ego of the landlord prevents them from making the best financial decision.

If my landlord told me this I would stop paying rent, and force him to evict me, which usually takes months. then when he finally gets some court to force me out after a few rent free months, i'd ask him if it was worth shutting off my internets.
