If you died today....

How many people do you think would show up at your funeral? I just got back from a funeral where approximately 250 showed up. The family was overwhelmed by the numbers. The crazy part is that this girl died from an apparent suicide. I don't think I'll ever understand how someone can bring themselves to suicide.

I wouldn't want a huge funeral. Maybe 30-40 people.

Seriously. Funerals are for the living, not the dead. It's a way for people who cared about you to deal with the loss together. And get drunk and start fights.

of course I have a say in the matter. My kids know I don't want a funeral. Funerals serve 3 purposes:
1) to memorialize the dead person's life
I feel no need for this because the best things I accomplished in this life live on after me
2) to give a sense of closure
I think this is unnecessary because there never really is closure when the dead person's memory lives on forever. I'd prefer to remember someone, and have others remember me, as a living vibrant being.
3) to provide comfort to the surviving loved ones
I don't think there is any comfort involved in a funeral. I think it's a huge imposition to ask of those in mourning to entertain and put on a happy face for an audience. Or conversely, show how well or not they handle their very private feelings.

yeah because it's totally customary for next of kin to do a little tap dance, or some vaudeville prior to the eulogy.

i'm going to let the living decide what to do with my corpse, so long as i'm not a financial burden i think anything else is vain.

I don't have a clue how many people would show up, but I bet the number would depend a lot on how I died.

All I know is that I told my Dad I want my ashes thrown at a pedestrian on the street. The funeral is of secondary importance.

Re: If you died today....

I want my tombstone to be a life-sized replica of me in a basketball jersey, with my name across the top of the back and my number being the last two digits of the year I died.

As for my funeral, I honestly could care less. Actually, I think I'd like to be cremated and spread somewhere though because then my family won't feel obligated to visit some grave site.

Either that or have my corpse cooked into a stew for my family to eat so that I can live on through them.

I'm not sure why you included this. Are you saying because she ended her own life, it shouldn't be commemorated? Or the grieving process is somehow cheapened or lessened for the living? Please explain.

FFK,

I don't know for sure, but my guess is that on average people who are depressed enough to take their own life are usually the same people that don't have a lot of friends. Apparently this wasn't the case in his story.

I think he was saying that
-having that many friends/people who care about you
does not go with
-being depressed enough to commit suicide.

At least I hope that's what he was saying.

Now, he's still wrong, but it's not as bad as in your interpretation.

I plan on allocating the money that would be spent on a funeral and instead spending it on an open bar. Hopefully there's enough whisky around to recreate Tim Finnegan's wake.

As others have mentioned I just wouldn't think that someone who touched so many lives and had so many people care about her could still bring herself to end her life. Like I said before I just don't think I'll ever understand it.

Re: If you died today....

I think I'd expect around 100 people maybe. When you're just a few years out of high school, you still keep in touch with all of those people, so I think a lot of them would come, and I was pretty friendly with about everyone in high school.

By the way, anyone who is reading this: If I die, tell my folks to cremate me and spread the ashes over the Long Island Sound please

i think it is. obv it is still sad that they died, but it seems strange grieving the death of someone who wanted to die.
