Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

A friend and myself are completely polarized by the following proposition.

Would you give up your hearing forever for 20 million dollars?

make it 35 million and you've got a deal.

I'm shocked 20 mil and no hearing is winning... you guys have no perspective. 20 mil isn't even that much.

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

Yea, 20 million sounds about right.

A quick ballpark guess of what I'd sell my senses for:
Sense of smell - 1/2 a million
Sight - 40 million
Sense of taste - 5 million
Sense of touch - 1 billion
6th Sense - Handful of magic beans

I'd need something like 20 Billion, take one for the team and setup all of my family and friends for life.

- communicating with everyone I care about becomes much more of a burden

- hearing absolutely NOTHING forever would SUCK.

- No Music forever is huge.

- jobs really limited

popeye18 10-25-2007 02:33 PM

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

I would not give up any of my senses for any amount of money(assuming taste and smell go together, otherwise i might be willing to part with smell for like 10 million.)

T-God 10-25-2007 02:38 PM

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

I might give up the ability to talk for alot of $. Other than that, I wouldn't give up anything.

Someone has your entire family locked in a room with a bomb. The only way to get them out alive is for you to take $20 million dollars and give up your hearing.

I win. Or do you let your family die so you can hear at their mass funeral?

I accept Paypal for the $100K

What if you could still hear ukes only?

How expensive can Hearing Aids really be?

Definitely a +EV investment.

lol. you can't use hearing aids if you have 0 hearing. hearing aids only amplify the sounds coming in so that the you can hear them with what little hearing you have. it wouldn't matter how loud the sounds coming in are, if you're completely deaf, you won't hear it.

now, perhaps you could get a cochlear implant. but with cochlear implants, sounds aren't natural, clear, or vibrant. you can "train" your brain to understand speech when you use a cochlear implant, but listening to music would be difficult.

btw i am a hearing aid wearer - i have 0 hearing in my right ear and about 1/2 of normal hearing in my left ear. i wear hearing aids and do pretty well.

disclaimer: i know you can't use hearing aids if you are completely deaf, but as i don't use cochlear implants, i can't guarantee that i'm right about those. i think i am, though.

to answer the question: since i expect to make enough money to live comfortably off of, i wouldn't want to lose what remaining hearing i have for $20 million. i don't know how much it would have to be. $100 million? A billion? i dunno.

I'll take the $20 million with the hopes they figure out a way through surgery to get it back.

Can I change my answer? I just realized if I lost my hearing the voices in my head would get louder.

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

As someone who's already basically deaf in one ear, hell no. In fact, I would give up a lot of money just to get stereo hearing back.

Not 20mil. But 20b I would give it up easy. My sweet spot is prob in the 1b+ range...

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

OP here:

I really don't see how anybody would give up hearing for any amount of money. I'm surprised money means that much to people here. I mean we only live once. Why not keep all the natural abilities that are given to us by birth. A small part of me also thinks I will be a multi-millonare too one day, though I'm not even close now.

I actually don't even think I would give up one of my toes for any amount of money.

Re: Settling a bet: Hearing vs Money

in short, money can't necesarily buy happiness, whereas spoken language and music can bring happiness. who cares if ur rich but u can't even enjoy a night out at a movie? or go to the beach and listen to the waves at night? or bang a hot chick and hear her moan? etc.
