OOT, What is your life situation?

-Age
-Occupation (If poker, please list stakes)
-Family? (GF/Wife . . kids)
-Would you say you're happy with where you are?

I spawn this post b/c I'm 26. Starting to look for a job. Been grinding out micro/low stakes for the past two years. I was working as a floor dealer in a casino. Quit to play poker full-time while finishing up school. The casino paid decent (far more than I think I'll make now going into the real world), I enjoyed the people I worked with, but I just couldn't see myself working in a casino for the rest of my life. Finished a marketing degree 14 months ago. Truthfully, I don't really want to work in marketing, but I don't want to play poker forever either. I'm single, in good shape, but all-around very unhappy with my life to this point. I think I'll be happy once I'm 'on my way' - wife, possibly kids and a steady job, but right now I just can't envision how I'll get to point B.

Try not to worry about this... You're only 26 afterall. Try to keep your eyes open for good opportunities in all areas of your life and things will work out for the best.

Unhappy. I have lost all interest in life. A few things can make me happy in the short term (matter of days) but nothing helps for the longer term. I don't care where I am. I don't care where I am or could be going. Being alive and being dead are approaching the same value.

Yes I'm very happy with where I am today. I dunno, I dropped out of university almost a year ago because it sucked and all the people sucked. So now I play a few hours poker a week and then do what I want with my time, it's awesome. Like a couple months ago I started dancing salsa for example which is loads of fun. Too bad it's only 1-2 times a week in my town, almost makes me want to move to a bigger city for more salsa :P

Family: GF that will probably become fiancee/wife in the next year.
Happiness: Pretty much. Sometimes it gets lonely, but I'm a bit of an introvert so I deal. I want more from life, but I think I'm taking positive steps to attain it, so that keeps me satisfied.

I'm extremely happy right now. However, I can relate to the anxiety around getting a full time job and the feeling that it consumes/defines your life. I've been out of school for 2.5 years, and the first year of working was really tough for me. It's very hard to get used to having drastically less free and flexibility in your life. In that regard, I envy all the successful poker players out there. I do love my job now and my relationship, friends, and social circle are all absolutely perfect and pretty damn amazing. I really couldn't ask for more.

Law Student

Live with GF

I have plenty of job offers and am trying to decide if I want to live in NYC or Boston for next summer and then after graduation. Things are going great with the girlfriend. Everyone in my family is healthy, I'm in the best shape of my life. My brothers whom I battled with for years are now actually my friends.

My dream is to be one of those reader's digest lawyer stories. Work at a big firm for a while, pay off my loans, save up a good nestegg, then leave to start a cookie company or doggie day care or something..

Working in internet marketing, put in my resignation a few weeks back and friday is my last day. I have no idea where I'll be going next, but I wasn't happy where I was because it was a tiny company with no room for growth.

Also casually playing 25nl/50nl and improving quickly.

No family or GF, but happily single living in DC.

I'd rate my happiness right now at around a 3/10, mostly because of the stress from trying to decide on a new career. That, and my car was just totaled, so I have that to deal with as well.

If anyone has job suggestions, particularly along the lines of business development/project management/marketing, I'd love to hear them.

wow, my experience was the exact opposite. in college I was always working and had a bunch of stuff to do, and never felt like I had any time. when I started working full time, having no constant obligations (outside normal work hours) felt great.

Re: OOT, What is your life situation?

age: 27 in a couple of days.

occupation: physics Ph.D student

family: getting married in a few months

happiness: This is a mixed bag. Most days, yes. However, it's become clearer recently that grad school was probably a mistake. I'm close enough to finishing that I think I'm going to ride it out, but the postdoc route doesn't look very appealing for a variety of reasons, so I'm going to try and find some industrial job. I am pretty open to this not involving physics per se.

This is an occasional source of depression/frustration and is the main source of unhappiness for me. The academic route is what almost everybody goes into grad school expecting, and is what the culture is built around, so even if you've made the conscious decision that it's not for you, you still feel like you've failed. Sometimes this triggers jags where I get to feeling that I'm not very interesting anymore (which assumes I ever was), and that's not so fun. But this is pretty rare. For the most part, things are pretty good. I like my friends (grad school has been fun even if it wasn't the greatest idea), and I feel pretty lucky to have found my fiancee. She's a great companion, and considerably more tolerant of some of my foibles than most women would be.

No serious GF, though I do get out a lot and meet tons of great girls, and am still very close with parents.

Just moved to NYC and am very happy... Currently debating whether I-banking + coaching/playing is possible (probably very high EV for my plans to not work past 45 or so)

Happy. I've decided to stop stressing about everything that gets to me, also learning how to work instead of procrastinate has helped a lot too. I plan on bumming through school at 3 courses a term while travelling here and there until I eventually become a successful doctor sometime in my 30s.
