Built and lost bankroll

I am playing $1/$2 NL on PokerStars. I consider myself a pretty solid player and have built up my bankroll twice now and lost it all both times. I built my bankroll up to 4x my initial deposit and managed to end with $0. I think I have a problem. I can't seem to walk away at any point. I will play for hours upon hours. I usually do well, but I have also had brutal losses. I had the worst run of cards today... the worst. I didn't have a winning session. I lost $800 in about 6 hours. I know most of you are thinking "move down limits." My response to that is simple- I feel comfortable at $1/$2. I do well... I just think I have a problem. I think I can't walk away when I'm on tilt. I allow myself to keep playing. I'm going to go broke if I keep this up... I honestly can't believe I lost everything.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

My problem is that I can't leave. I can't give up. I can't call it a day. A lot of times this works out for me. I'll have huge days. Win a ton of money... but then I'll have bad days. I guess it's never good when you are averaging 1000 FPP a day. How often do you guys usually cash out? Do you also limit yourself to a certain amount of time you spend playing each day? Also, I have a problem of tilting myself trying to win back anything I lose. Any suggestions on combating this? It's tough when you lose a big hand for a lot of money. For me, it's tougher to leave my computer after those hands. This is where I usually go on tilt and even though I realize it, I don't stop for some reason.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

Not being able to walk away could be considered a gambling problem I guess... as far as quitting poker goes- yeah right.

that problem is being a complete tilt monkey with no self-control and a propensity for gambling over your head and losing all your money.

THAT's how I have 4300 posts telling you you have a gambling problem

I do much better in live poker. I live in VA though, so casinos are not at my disposal.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

a good rule to follow I believe is the if you lose 3buyins just quit. If you cant quit, then you straight up should not be playing poker. probably be better playing blackjack or roullete, where you will lose your money sooner and not drag on the event of going bankrupt. Just being able to play poker is going to lead to success, There seems to be so much more to poker than poker itself, such as being in control of your life good example, being able to stop playing and move down limits, it self discipline to do it, if you lack that, then you lack what it takes to be a successful poker player

I have a problem. You're right. I'm going to take a break from poker for a while and when I return, I'm actually going to think about bankroll management.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

You know, I really enjoy playing poker, but there are things I need to work on. I obviously enjoy playing too much... hah but oh well. It's a learning process. Most people can't get to the top overnight.

wems 10-23-2007 01:45 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

I think there is more to poker than bankroll management also? Don't play poker if you have any "problems" in RL like make sure you are in control of everything. if your a student make sure your school work is done first (confidence) its a lot to it.... but I do believe self control is one of the most important things, GL to you

Thanks for your posts. It's weird that you mention real life issues... I have had a lot going on in my life recently and maybe that has had an effect on my success.

Don't pay any mind to FWF, he plays 25nl on Party and thinks it's funny to make fun of people who are better and more successful than him. I recommend making fun of him to make you feel better.

Also, lol $800 at $1/2nl is nothing. If that's the worst run of cards you've been very fortunate to this point.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

what was ur initial deposit? Just from an EV perspective (even if you don't actually suck at poker, which i think you might) you should be adaquately rolled not to bust the bank since it takes a long time to get back.

motifesta 10-23-2007 02:21 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

My initial deposit was only $200. I made that deposit on Friday, got it up to $800 and then busted today.

motifesta 10-23-2007 02:24 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

I know what you are going to say already... I am playing limits too high. I know people say with that deposit I should be playing at like .10/.25

I am more comfortable playing $1/$2... I guess I just need to deposit more to secure my bankroll.

I am sure everyone here has had 4 losing sessions in a day. Thats where bankroll management comes into play. I however am more interested in making money. Making 600 in a day is great. Making 600 each day is tougher...

Dude, in all seriousness, either stop being retarded or stop playing poker. I'm very tempted to make fun of you like everyone else, but what can I say I'm just too nice and I feel bad for you. It sounds like you really do have a gambling/intelligence problem and I think it's just douchebaggy to tell you otherwise.

Re: Built and lost bankroll

you can be the best player in the world, but in order to even stand a tiny chance to be successful at 1/2 you need to have AT LEAST 4k in your bankroll.
you WILL lose hands, and you WILL lose stacks w/ great hands. bankroll management will help you overcome shortterm variance.
dont pretend you are better than the avg 1/2 player. you very probably arent when you dont get these simple, basic poker concepts.

rand 10-23-2007 03:37 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

ok seriously, you guys are all [censored]

to OP (motifesta) i am not trying to be an ass so bear with me
i dont care what you think, DO NOT PLAY 1,2 NL WITH $200
no matter how good you are it will be a fluke if you succeed from this point

if i literally had to build up a roll i would put 500 on and play 50NL... for multiple reasons though i think you should start at 25NL with $500

also, this may be the hardest part for you but you kind of need to stop worrying about the $$ and concentrate on making the right play, im positive given what you have said so far in this thread that you dont understand alot of fundamental concepts that we all take for granted-->READ SSNL

and finally i would imagine that a big leak for you, given the # of tables you are likely playing and your feelings about walking away down from a session is that you have WIN EVERY POT SYNDROME-this needs to be fixed bc even 50NL guys can adjust to aggro monkeys

either way gl man...poker can be great for you, but unless you change what i just mentioned along with a bunch of other things it will more likely than not be bad for you

motifesta 10-23-2007 03:37 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

Seriously? $4k? Thats like saying don't walk into a casino without 4k in your wallet to play the lowest limit tables they have. I understand your point though.

82Steve 10-23-2007 03:39 AM

Re: Built and lost bankroll

live at a casino its different cuz players are much worse
(and you dont need to carry your whole bankroll w/ you)
