I'm giving $200 to the first person who is able to fix my internet in the hotel I'm at right now to allow me to connect to MSN and all the poker sites. Here is the story/problem:

I check into my hotel in Rome, Italy. All is great. They give me a cable to connect to the internet (they do not have wireless). I plug it in and they give me a sheet of paper which tells me to go to Internet Options ----> Connections ----> LAN Settings - and enter their proxy server information and port number. I've never had to do this in any other hotel. Anyways, I connect to the internet, open up my web browser and I'm browsing 2p2 with no problem and chatting to friends on AIM as well. I then decide I want to play poker so I open up stars and FTP and it won't connect to the servers. My MSN also does not connect to the server. So BBV, what is the deal with my internet and how can I fix it? I cant leave the hotel because they have my card on file and theres no cancellations. The closest internet cafe is like a 10 minute cab drive away with the inconvienence of me leaving my room which isnt cool. PLEASE HELP!

Weird that you were able to get on aim servers but not msn or ftp. GL

The router at the hotel is blocking these ports. You are SOL. Sorry, ship it?

Proxy Server is usually set up only for Port 80 or 8080, which is the "internet" port for the http socket. That means you can only access sites, that build there connection through port 80. If the internet is limited to connection via proxy, you have no other choice.
You could play on partypoker though, they have a browser/java-based software too.

btw: AIM uses port 80.

For Stars, you may be able to connect by going and running pokerstars.exe from c:\program files\pokerstars\pokerstars.exe. This will bypass the update and launch your connection directly.

my friend was in italy for a month and played poker by using logmein and having his computer back at home turned on.

this wont work because pokerstars uses non http and non https ports. so no.

Correct. I'm on Internet Explorer right now and surfing the web no problem. Also, Skype works.

If you can use a browser then you could use Absolute Poker's browser client:

Mabye some more trustworthy sites have something equivalent.

Is there an in-hotel IT person? If so, I believe Stars communicates through port 443 and port 26002. (one for updates, one for application). Could you request that those be opened?

(at least this is what was written in another forum where someone was having connection probs- i just cut/pasted and am not sure what this means).

It sounds like there's some sort of problem with the firewall or the ports you connect to the internet with.

No IT guys here, because I was going to ask them to open the ports, that was the first thing I tried. =(

Hi

I can fix your problem for you.

Do this word for word and you will be online with your poker client.

Go to here: www.http-tunnel.com/
Download Http Tunnel, the download is here:
http://www.http-Tunnel.com/html/solu...nel/client.asp

Install it and then click on the free service when it opens.

This will enable you to pass through what ever proxy or firewall they have at your end and get through to your poker site via your client does not matter which ports are blocked.

After it has installed run "test", this will automaticly configure it for you, it detects what the internet is like were you are, what your behind etc..

Do set the internet options like how they told you as normal.

You can also configure p2p clients to go through this http tunnel but Id leave that alone and concentrate on the poker only.

thats the whole point of the http proxy, you can pick any location in the world, and your connection goes there first and then to the poker room and its run through an http port.

Hi

Once it has downloaded install it and it will put an entry in your start menu and also a little icon in the system tray down in the bottom right of your screem..

You first need to be concerned about getting the file down from their web site and installing it.

It will start up and you need to run test, it may do this automaticly.

Using proxys is probably the easiest way of getting around this.

Every couple of months or so the italian goverment send all the italian ISP a list of the most popular gambling websites which they then block access to.

Using proxys is probably the easiest way of getting around this.

i couldnt access any poker sitesin my browser, but had no problems connecting and playing on the actual clients while i was in italy recently.

MAKE SURE YOU PUT YOUR HOTEL PROXY INTO THE HTTP TUNNEL CLIENT IF IT DOES NOT AUTO PICK UP... you get to it from settings.

You should be good to go, I cant think of any good reason why you wont be up, its going to work, your going to need only a few k for a decent poker sesssion so you should be more than fine..

If you want some good advise, once the client is up and running dont go steaming into your game, take it easy get the client up then take a shower or some thing and relax for a minute.

When I said "your going to need only a few k for a decent poker sesssion so you should be more than fine.." I ment traffic speed, poker clients use about as much traffic as telnet I would guess so as long as you get a good 3kbits link speed through http tunnel you should have real time poker gaming..


1-Download http tunnel.
2-Install it then click on settings, look at the image above, enter in the proxy details so the http tunnel which will be dealing with your internet traffic actually goes to the hotel proxy, to the right address, was you given a user name or password, if so enter it so it will athentic and get internet for you.

3-Now go into internet options for your actual software your system, internet explorer, tools, options, Lan settings, set the proxy to 127.0.0.1 port 1080.

Those are two major steps you need to do ok..
