nyc bust
Hi, longtime reader here...
Just a heads up that a certain midtown east poker club was raided yesterday (Friday). I showed up to hear the bad news last night. Everyone might want to be cautious and take the weekend off from other clubs in case the busts are coming in a bunch. I hope not, and I don't mean to scare anyone if this is just an isolated incident. BTW, the bouncers outside said that this time, the card room's shut down for good. who knows.. Mod note: There is nothing wrong with this OP, but I am locking the thread because I will be away and *TT* is away and I have had to delete many replies to it that were not acceptable. -RR |
Re: nyc bust
UPDATE:
The room was called Straddle. Straddle no longer exists, they were officially evicted last week. There has been an evection proceeding in the works for some time now, it finally took place. Word on the street is they have no plans to reopen at this time due to the legal environment, of course if they do reopen somewhere else you won't hear about it here for security reasons but at this point you just witnessed the end of the Straddle era. Reminder: if you are responding to this thread please do not include intimate details as per the B&M forum FAQ. Posters who break this very simple rule will be dealt with as per the forum FAQ. |

im gonna miss the straddle. what is happening to nyc? [/ QUOTE ] happening...if you mean for the past 2-3 years then its simple, poker is illegal when they find the rooms now they bust them. No one turns a blind eye anymore , environment is totally diffrent |
Re: nyc bust
Does anybody think it's because of less police corruption? I know that when they had a corruption scandal in Toronto. They claimed that detectives protected night clubs, so it's not a stretch to think games weren't protected. In the past NYC has had scandals where the police protected bordellos....

Re: nyc bust
lefty - its seriously best to not discuss why. If the reasons why became commonly known then eventually it leaks to the press (like it always does) and thats just bad news for everyone. Some things in life you must grin and bear it.

people will still try however...a new one will pop up eventually. [/ QUOTE ] You can always tell the newcomers (for what its worth i consider myself to be a newcomer too) to the NY Poker world when they make a statement like that, they old timers know that there will always be a game somewhere, but they also understand that it might be hard to get in it. For many years there were only 1-2 rooms in NY maximum spreading only a handful of games, that changed 4 years ago with the advent of the mega-rooms. So in some ways the current situation is the status quo. The days of large multiple rooms spread around the city are done, loose lips sunk ships. |
Re: nyc bust
Alot of the games have moved outside Manhattan, the rooms seem to draw much less attention in the suburbs here, it probably wouldn't be the same in smaller cities. The poker economy is too big to dissapear, there are quite a few people who count on the underground rooms to earn a living whether through dealing, operation the floor, providing security or even as a prop player. As long as you are a decent person that people deem trustworthy you will find a few games, ****************************. A small piece of advice I can offer any players is to befriend a few of the dealers who seem good at their job, the ones that seem to know alot of the other players personally. Tip them well, treat them with respect and exchange phone numbers. They always know where the next game is and sometimes their reference is the only way to get introduced to a game.

Re: nyc bust
Fishcakes that is really good advice.
I had befriended a few dealers (and tipped them well too) but never exchanged phone numbers. That would have been a great thing to do. |
Re: nyc bust
NYC Poker
Let's just legalize it! |

Let's all plan a 2p2 trip to AC !

Re: nyc bust
Can we discuss on why Straddle stayed up for so long despite countless busts?
|
Re: nyc bust
I have some "theories" and 2nd-hand information as to why it *continued* to stay open, but I think I'll get banned if I post. I'll await an OK from a Mod..

Re: nyc bust
Good luck with any information, 2nd hand or not, getting on this board for more then 6 minutes without being shunned. Clearly we wouldn't want to give anything away regarding a club every poker player and cop in a 75 mile radius knew about.

Re: nyc bust
Seems like these Ny city bust's are becoming quite common. Wonder who is behind closing them down. I met a very aggressive mid limit nl player from new york during my travels that was going to give me info on where all the rooms were located last year and names of his friends who play there but now i bet they have prob. all changed.
this nice jewish fellow who had a very old baseball card as a card protector said all new yorkers play as aggressive as he does lol. And please excuse my grammer, I'm somewhat successfull but obviously not well educated. |

Re: nyc bust
TT, I obviously know its against the rules.
However this information really wouldn't hurt NYC poker. Just shed light on why one of its fore-gone clubs stayed open for sooo long. |

[/ QUOTE ] sorry, unless your talking about how it took NYC more than 6 months to get an eviction notice served to shut down a business then this is a topic that just wont be discussed. Its not in the best interest of NY poker players, and we are here to protect their needs regardless of what some may think. |

Re: nyc bust
I laugh repeatedly every time I read the posts about not divulging info in order to keep clubs "safe". BTW let me offer a shoutout to all the NYPD Vice currently reading this board for illicit underground poker room info. I'm sure there are multitudes of you glued to the keyboard, anxiously awaiting the valuable, thusfar secret info which we the posters of 2p2 are about to make known.

Maybe he does this on craigs list or yahoo news groups too. Perhaps he does just a google search to see what "NYC and Poker" brings up , see cause public discussion of things that are illegal and go "unnoticed" tends to be bad. While its probably no big secret to some letting it flow free is not a good idea is it? |
