Just turned pro got a couple questions?

Hello. I just started playing poker a living about a month and a half ago. I started playing the 20 SNG on Full Tilt and have now moved up to the 30 SNG and a couple 50's. I have been reading alot about attainable ROI and was wondering if I have just been running good and if so what is to be expected at those levels mainly the 30 and 50's. I am also playing the normal ones not the Turbos.

My ROI is 35%. My avg profit per game is $10 and my total profit is 3300 over about 350 games. Also I keep 50 buy ins for each level and have heard of 20 buy in downswings and was wondering if I should up the amount of buy ins to 75 or 100. You can sharkscope me for more details under Toerazor I play on Full Tilt. Thanks for all your help much appreciated. Keep grindin.

I find it funny that you are a pro, and yet can't tell if you are running hot...

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

50 BIs is fine so long as you can move down when the downswings hit (ie you can live off of grinding lower stakes than your accustomed to). I highly recommend having a backup roll stuck away in a high interest savings account.

And to echo Devin, if you truly don't know if your current ROI is sustainable you jumped into this profession pretty recklessly.

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

You are way above sustainable....the fact that you don't know this means you shouldn't be a pro.

I know this and I haven't played sng's in quite a while as I play cash games now (ironically for a living...for a while anyway, I'll be attending law school next year...if I were superstitious I'd cross my fingers on which one.) So actually I'll play for a living through that too...then I guess I'll look for a job...unless I happen to progress far enough that getting a job as a lawyer would cost me money or that it's close enough that the extra happiness of not having a job is worth it. (Of course gotta factor in pension plans and all sort of stuff.)

Anyway, OP, just from you not understanding sample sizes and sustainable winrates and such I doubt you are good enough to be a pro...although possible I guess. Also from you average stake I guess a little low to be a pro unless you can maintain a real good ROI (I'm thinkin like 12%) and play large volume: like 1500-2000 a month.....though I guess even lower than those totals is possible. Just depends on retirement plans (if you plan to play pro long term), as well as how many tables you can play at a time, and how much money you need to live, etc.

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

i lost 30 buyins in my last 80 27s, when my roi for my last 1500 games was >13%. (20 tabling)

it seems impossible, but it happened. i should make a post of all the hands i busted on. im losing with like AA < A8o when the flop comes A59, seriosly. allin pf or on flop when they have to go runner runner and they hit it everytime. as a matter of fact i think i still might be dreaming the whole thing.

to answer your question, you should have >100 buyins. also, find real job to maximize $/hr.

Anytime I have a good winning day, I like to calculate what I would make over the course of a year at that rate and then think of myself as a pro.

Thanks appreciate it. I know the average ROI should be around 20% for a good player I was just wondering if this level was attainable. I also play live cash about 5 times a week so I have a live bankroll also which helps. Thanks.

20%? Times gone by. 10% would be good for you, and you really need to up your games if you want to make a living. 1000 a month at 10% at $33 = $3,300 per month = not a good living unless you live in Peru!

Seriously, read everything here, all the stickies and poobah posts. This is not an easy life, but GL.

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

I can take 3300 a month to live off of. I am a 23 year old single guy who lives in Lake Tahoe in a house with 3 Guys. Our rent is only 350 a month. Thats why I decided to take a shot now. I was at a job making about 400 a week and made more playing poker on the side. So I have been doing it full time now for almost 2 months. Before this I had been playing SNG in college and also lived in Las VEgas last year and played a TON. That also helped my game out. Well see how things go but im doing good so far. Keep track of me on sharkscope well see how I do. Ill keep posting on here alot more it is a very helpful website. Thanks for the input. GRIND.

Noodleman: " I'm aware of how bad a 100 buyin downswing is."

In sept/early oct I had a 100 BI downswing too. I reviewed a lot of HHs and played the majority of hands fairly well, with some exceptions... I attribute it somewhat to the games getting tougher, weaker game selection, being unaware of new regulars and ppl calling me extremely light.

My favorite part is his first post claims he's been pro for 4 months. Now it's 2.

Also for those saying he should be happy with 10%, I think he's playing a minimal number of tables and not playing turbos. 20ish% should definitely be achievable.

I would asy if you held 10% roi over say 3k S&G on full tilts 20s you would be one of the better players i have ever seen play 20s

eh shoulda said 15% for better i have ever seen
10% is doable for an avg player over 3k

I actually ran about a 30roi for 1k at the start of the month was hella nice.

im down to 5.5 roi on the month now

On a sick losing streak hopefully this thread raises my spirits to crush some poker next few days

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

GL man! i wish you all the success in the world. I would rec. having at least 100 bi's because you don't want to have a 30 bi downswing affecting you mentally - if you have 70 bi's and lose 30-40, you're going to be mentally [censored]. Keep a large safety roll, be smart about moving up, and keep studying the game and you should be straight. Also, imo it might not be a great idea to advertise your sharkscope records, but maybe I'm a little too cautious.

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

you guys are forgetting the difference in NONturbo sngs. theres a lot less swings and high rois are realistic and there are WAAAY less regulars/pros, if any. im sure 15-20% is possible. OP how many tables do you play at a time?

jkpoker - how can you possibly have a 30%roi in 1k games and bring that all the way down to -5% in less than 20 days?

agree on the turbos vs regs but:

a) youre talking about the upper ends of attainable ROIs even at the regulars and the OP cant tell if hes on a heater at 30%...it just doesn't seem like he has the understanding of the game yet to asses playing SNGs professionally meaning I doubt he can maintain that high of an earn. Nothing personal at all against the OP, and I think the jokes in the thread are dumb fwiw, but just what its looking like from here.

b) on that same note, even if he was earning similarly to 15-20%, it doesn't seem like he is playing enough tables to make it more meaningful than achieving less than half that ROI multi tabling turbos (being that hes played 300 total or something).

It wasnt -5 it was 5 im still up a cuople thousand just playing so many and not winning drops it fast.
Playing 100+ per day i find losing 600 a day your roi plummets on 24s lol.

True rois can be held much higher on non turbos i play couple other sites not playing turbos and hold closer to 15-20 range.

That being said 36 is not sustainable however it might not be massively far off on none turbos playing only 1-2 tables.

lol jk you sure picking a [censored] month to go for the ldrboard... I guess it's good in a sense that it's motivating you to play.

Are you 12 tabling for like 4 hrs a day or more then that?

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

I play 4 SNG's at a time and try to play about 4 sessions a day. So far I am making triple what I would have made at my work. But I am going to wait to make the move up the the $50 SNG till I get to 5K. So I will keep you guys updated and hopefully things continue.

So far yeh just 16 sometimes 20 im making about 150 to 200 a day. I also play live at night. So SNG are not my only source of poker income. I also have a live bankroll and play about 5 nights a week at Harveys.

What stakes do you play live? unless it's like 10x the stakes, playing more live than online is -EV.

Re: Just turned pro got a couple questions?

They have a 2/3 NL game I buy in for 200 and have a 2/5 NL game I buy in for 500. Both games play a little bigger than normal. I played live in Vegas alot when I lived there and the games here are WAY softer. There are alot of old people with lots of money in this town. Also once ski season starts WOW is it a great game.
