OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

OK, the Arizona State game's final now, so we can start a rank'em thread in earnest without doing anything crazy like giving the top spot to Cal.

I'll post my rankings shortly.

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

1. Ohio State

5. Oregon
6. Kentucky
7. Boston College
8. South Carolina
9. West Virginia
10. California
11. Arizona State
12. Florida
13. Kansas
14. Missouri
15. USC
16. Auburn

You can see how desperate I got at the bottom by looking at my close rankings. Yes, Hawaii cracked my Top 32.

Michigan beat Penn State.

Thoughts? If Michigan beats Illinois (who also beat Penn State) next week do they get to jump them in the rankings?

iggymcfly 10-14-2007 02:05 AM

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

Edit: You edited your post, so I'm editing mine. Anyway, the reason Penn State's above Michigan despite the H2H has a lot to do with the edit. Basically, Penn State's played much much better at Happy Valley than they have on the road. Sagarin had PSU 4 points better on a neutral field going into today and that was before they waxed Wisconsin. I just think that their overall resume's better at this point of the season.

I just posted this on the other thread. Don't have time to sort the mess at 10 and beyond.

1.OSU
2.LSU
3.USF
4.Oklahoma
5.Kentucky
6.BC
7.Oregon
8.SCarolina
9. Cal

10...USC, VTech, Arizona St.

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

Sorry yeah, I'm drunk so I'm editing my post like crazy. So why is Ohio State over 25 spots off from Hawaii? What is different about their resumes?

Neither has played a top 25 team. I mean I'm not arguing OSU is better, I just don't see why they get so much credit just for being in a BSC conference.

iggymcfly 10-14-2007 02:15 AM

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

Hawaii not only hasn't played a Top 25 team, they haven't played a Top 100 team. The best team they've played so far is San Jose State who was ranked #111 by Sagarin predictor going into this week. Ohio State's beaten Purdue and Washington who are both decent. (Top 50 at least.)

Also, they've had to go to overtime twice while Ohio State's won every game they've played this season by at least 16 points.

3. Oklahoma
4. Cal
5. Oregon
6. Kentucky
7. Florida
8. USC
9. USF
10. Boston College
11...25 I don't know

I don't care about the loss, LSU is still the best team in the country.

LSU is 3-1 versus top 32* opponents. No other team has 3 wins versus top 32 opponents.

Like OSU, Boston College, and Hawaii, Arizona State has not faced a top 32 opponent this season. USF would be far more deserving of the number one ranking IMO, since they have beaten both Auburn and West Virginia.

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

God I don't know. This is off the top of my head, and definitely will have a few overranked/underranked teams, but maybe something like:

1. Ohio State
2. LSU
3. Oklahoma
4. Kansas (I definitely think Kansas is the second best undefeated team right now)
5. Oregon
6. South Florida
7. Boston College
8. Arizona State
9. Kentucky
10. Florida
11. South Carolina
12. West Virginia
13. Auburn
14. Cal
15. Virginia Tech
16. Missouri
17. Texas Tech
18. Cincinnati
19. USC
20. Penn State

I'm not going any farther, it really doesn't matter at this point, and I've already included a couple of teams that I'm not sure deserve to be in the top 25... but are for lack of better options.

I do not believe that Boston College is one of the top five teams in the country this season, at this point. I'm not attempting to predict where they will be ranked in the official polls (obviously they'll be 2-3 like you say). I think they're overranked, though, and that it's pointless to talk about what will happen *if* they go undefeated because I think they have less than a 5% chance of doing so.

BC last 5 games are:

VT on the road.
Florida State at home.

Clemson on the road.
Miami at home.

I think the hardest game will be VT. If they beat VT, I can easily see them going 12-0 and playing for the BCS title.

So how about that wager?

They have about a 10% chance of going undefeated. They're at best 50% against Virginia Tech on the road and 50% in the title game against Virginia Tech or Virginia. That alone knocks them down to 25%.

Not a chance in hell KU can sniff LSU or OU's jock. They aren't even in the same league. Like it was mentioned early LSU is 3-1 against top 30 teams in the country, OU is 2-0--KU has won one big game and that was a super overrated KSU team that was overranked b/c of a soft schedule and a win over a fumbling UT team at the time and also a UT team that they match up well against. KU's SOS is 126, LSU's is 13.

I still find it real easy to say LSU and OU are the two best teams in the country. On a goofy poll I would have to put them 4 or 5 or something but in a title game these teams are monsters.

Also either of those two defenses against tOSU's defense would be crazy.

This is the most unrealistic bs I have seen in NCAA football history How In the hell can you still put LSU number 1 after loss. Give UK some respect they beat LSU in a good game with a 2nd string RB. UK should be ranked ahead of LSU. REalistic Top 10 below!

1.OSU
2.BC
3.USF (Lets not forget they beat Auburn who beat UF and they beat WVU. THey had a bad game against FAU but we are all entitled to a letdown)
4.UK
5.LSU
6.OU(Yea they have beat TX and Mizzou but they lost to CU and SEC is better than BigXII also)
7.So Car
8.Oregon
9.WVU
10.VA Tech

USC isnt in top 10 bc they are so overrated. They barely beat Arizona and they lost last week. They still gotta play Cal and Oregon. 3 loss season people lets face the facts!

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

I understand the desire to rank LSU above OSU, but you have to be somewhat results-oriented. The great thing about college football is every game matters and the upsets, when they happen, are so meaningful and devastating for the losing team. If you just go by Vegas lines or whatever, you wind up in a world where you are sitting at a computer with a pocket protector watching the final seconds a great upset and your reaction is "Doesn't matter: LSU is still favored over everyone else." What kind of world is that? Ok that's hyperbole but really it has to be some fusion of results and potential/ability. You don't just put all unbeatens ahead of all 1 loss teams, and you don't just put the Vegas favorite ahead of everyone else either.

RedEye,

I believe you forgot Hawaii in that.

Edit: Just to say they have no notable wins and games that remain that matter vs Fresno, vs Boise, vs Washington. None of those are really big either, but FSU and BSU are conference games so I have to put something into those, and UW is there only big non-conferece game for the year.

Yeah they had a bad game but so what? Rankings are relative, and almost everyone else has a loss or some other blemish. Basically OSU is the only team with no unimpressive performances but they've also played a weak schedule so...I dunno. SFU has two impressive wins thus far so of course I put them in the top five. I know they got 6 TO's against WVU but I was still very impressed with their D. Although that might just be because I'm a Michigan fan and we've had a spot of trouble against spread teams, especially ones that run the ball.

TomCollins 10-14-2007 11:53 AM

Re: OFFICIAL NCAAF Rank\'em thread: October 14, 2007

My top 10:

1) tOSU - weak schedule, but dominating in games they are supposed to. Defense looks to be one of the best in the country.
2) LSU - tough loss against a good team in 3 OTs, I can't think of anyone who really deserves to be #2
3) Oklahoma - Fell asleep at Colorado, but a dangerous team.
4) Kansas - Looks good, played no one, definitely deserving until they lose
5) Oregon - Close loss against Cal, offense looks great. Probably the team to beat in the Pac-10 at this point
6) South Carolina - uSC looks outstanding at times and questionable at others. The drubbing they put on Kentucky speaks volumes about their upside, especially after the Kentucky upset. Only loss is a respectable 28-16 loss @ LSU.
7) Kentucky - Talented, but unpredictable. Looked great against LSU's supposedly unstoppable defense, but got throttled by SC.
8) Arizona State - Undefeated, played no one so far, but they keep chugging. Not a great team, but this year, not many are.
9) Boston College - Another undefeated untested team. A 13 point win over ND is pretty weak, but solid wins over GT and Wake Forest are nice.
10) South Florida - They beat Auburn when Auburn was down, and beat West Virginia in an incredibly sloppy game. That's why I'm putting South Florida in the top 10 and not lower. Close game against FAU- inexcusable. Expect at least 2 losses in their future.

This is horrible logic. This is the same logic that had Wisconsin at #5. Close wins against crappy teams usually indicates a crappy team. LSU losing @ UK should be worth more than barely winning against a team that is always on the ESPN Bottom 10.

Trust me, I don't think USF stays undefeated past this week(of course I feel like USF is going to lose to Rutgers) but I'm not gonna fault them for one game. They went to Auburn and beat them, down or not, that ended up being a damn good win. They took out WVU at home, WVU had a down game and I'm sure they are kicking themselves for doing it.

Personally I know they are a top 5 team this year when any other year they are top 15. OSU has to be top 3, LSU I feel has to be top 3 right now, the rest is interchangable. Personally, with an obvious bias, I think USF is #1 at the moment. Maybe it is horrible logic, but I'm having fun with all this and it's been a very enjoyable season.

My poll is my opinion but it is also what I think the pollsters will vote for. i dont think USF will be voted #1 nor do I think they will have any 1st place votes. Don't we all love that Cinderella story. Last yrs Boise St team. I would love to see all these ranked teams get knocked off and see Hawaii vs USF BCS Title game it would great. I love the lil guys!

re: BC going undefeated bet...

no chance. im an alum and i promise you they will let people down. in the not so official ranking thread i said i think they will end the season with 3 loses pre bowl game.

this is a team that has a history of blowing a game they should win (maybe a maryland, see: syracuse a few years back) and a history of losing to a down on the year but talented team (see: miami last year).

they tend to play well against VT so that should be interesting. but even if they win that, they will still lose a regular season game.

any odds bet is probably in the favor of the guy betting against BC but to win 20 risking 500 is about as dumb as thinking BC can run the table.

yes i know this is a different team (with the coach and a legit QB with experience) but some this team is so untested its sad. WF wasnt that good although i was impressed by their FSU win but losing to nebraska is more pathetic now than before...and GT is so up and down a win over them (albeit in atlanta) proves little.

and yes i hate on my school but all my toolbox friends have been rock hard for a month now and im sick of it...
