Am I getting screwd by my dry cleaner?

Shirts cost $1.85. Today they charged me $3.95 for my chamois shirt. It was "heavier" than a normal shirt. That's bull caca right? I should add the service is excellent so I'm willing to pay a little bit of a premium but I really feel like I'm taking it in the butt here.

Sue them for 6 million dollars. Oh, wait, I guess they have to lose your pants before you can do that.

I run into the same thing. That shirt has to be done with a different process than just wash, dry and iron, so it costs more. Mine cost $5.00 so I'd say you're getting a bargain.

Chamois is more than just heavier, it reacts to heat differently (look at the tag gosh). I imagine it takes a different process. Of course, they should explain that instead of some heavier nonsense.

Probably not getting screwed, but if you are, you are getting a kiss before and an "I love you" afterwards.

You people are talking like everyone knows what a chamois shirt is. After seeing images, I'm guessing I know nothing about it because I'm from a warm climate where such a fabric really isn't needed.

so, in the joke

"this shirt says dry clean only... whichmeans it's DIRTY"

does that mean that mitch doesn't bother to get clothes dry cleaned, or that it's impossible to clean clothes without getting them wet and hence it's a conspiracy and they are still dirty?

Re: Am I getting screwd by my dry cleaner?

Your cotton dress shirts are laundered in a normal washing machine, starched, and pressed. The pressing is done by machines, which takes a couple of minutes.
The chamois one required dry cleaning process instead of being laundered. The cost is mainly for the ironing/pressing they have to do since it's all by hand.

Re: Am I getting screwd by my dry cleaner?

Storm - Just cuz it's an industry standard, does it mean I'm not getting screwed? $1.85/shirt is expensive no? Also, Chamois shirts can be machine washed and dried. Why is it so special when I take them to a cleaner?

LFS - Chamois shirts are the nuts as long as you don't mind the mountain man look in your personal style. They are also a bit warmer than a standard long sleeve. They are great casino wear.

You definitely shouldn't have to take this from a dry cleaner.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by "getting screwed". If everyone charges about that much, and you voluntarily take the shirt to them to clean, I don't see the problem here. My parents would have informed you that it would be more expensive when you dropped it off to avoid this problem.

My parents charged $1.75 per shirt, and a chamois shirt probably ran about $3.50. I don't recall the exact explanation for this, but I believe the heavier shirts simply took more time/effort to clean and press.

Boris,

These guys also don't realize how often you wear your sweet chamois shirts!

BTW, I wonder how many people are pronouncing chamois wrong.

How do dry cleaners iron shirts? Do they have some kind of machine? Cos I just got my nice Burberry slim fit back and they did a horrendous job ironing.

The shirt is either placed around something similar to a mannequin that shoots out steam, or the mannequin is sandwiched between large sheets of iron that do the steaming.

Isn't $1 standard price for mens shirts? I was under the impression they usually did them for like $.99. I thought it was the drycleaning loss leader cause everyone always needs shirts drycleaned

Well my cleaners just went up. Dropped off a shirt today that has to be hand ironed. Now $5.75

Re: Am I getting screwd by my dry cleaner?

You realize true chamois is not cloth, but rather, in most cases, highly tanned deer skin, right? Just a little harder to take care of than your standard shirt, hence the cost i would imagine.
Is your shirt true chamois, or just called chamois because of the finish?

I'm paying $1.50 a shirt in jersey. I forget what it is in D.C.
