Schuerholz stepping down

Fox story reporting Shuerholz is expected to step down

As a Mets fan, I consider this good news.

Schuerholz took over as GM in 1990 and the team won 14 straight division titles before struggling the past two seasons.

I'd say he's been pretty succesfull

I fully support this if the Braves can get Dayton Moore back.

Is this one of those I am leaving before things get real bad down here moves? I think it is a good possibility. With limited spending, core of the team getting older, farm system weak. Ugly time to be a Braves fan.

I wouldn't exactly call the Braves farm system as "weak". It took a hit after the trade for Teixiera, but they are still probably a middle of the road farm system.

The Braves payroll is actually going to increase some over the next few years. They were recently purchased by Liberty Media who claims they will open up the payroll some over the next few years.

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

Not to mention, this team is far from old outside of Chipper & Smoltz. If anything they may be getting younger in CF & most likely at SS w/ Escobar. One of the younger teams, I believe.

mmbt0ne 10-11-2007 02:11 PM

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

Yeah, and the only reason the farm system might be weaker is because it has been used to fill the major league roster in the past few years. Sure the farm system looked stronger when it had Francouer, McCann, Escobar, etc. down there.

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

I think the moves are pretty obvious outside of which pitchers we try & get. Resign Tex & extend/hold on to almost everyone else. It's not really brain surgery right now.

This is all somewhat interesting considering they announced that the coaching staff is all remaining the same before this happened.. Obviously JS is still going to be influential.

No, but he's certainly in that argument.

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

But we need to get starting pitching. I love Smoltz but he's going to retire soon leaving us with 1 quality starting pitcher in Hudson. Some of the callups weren't horrible but weren't exactly good. Going forward I think the O is rediculously good maybe the best lineup the team has ever put up. We just need to get some SP.

Late into the season I was happy about the relief corps. I think Acosta and the pitcher from Texas were excellent late season additions. Soriano calmed down and the guy from Australia was pretty much unhittable.

Usually when guys at his success level step down, it is because they see gloom in the future and want to minimize risk of being associated with a loser / damage reputation.

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

That's a shame about Schuerholz and bad news for Atlanta. gg Braves, you have no chance now that he's gone.

Wynton 10-11-2007 03:31 PM

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

I still think this is good news for Braves haters. Schuerholz will obviously have continued influence, but someone else will have chief responsibility for player moves, won't they? Otherwise, there would be no significance to these titles.

My totally uninformed impression is that he probably wants to spend less time and energy dealing with the day-to-day grind.

Re: Schuerholz is the freakin president now!

(Needed a title change.)

His best moves were getting washed up/medicore pitchers - Lightenburg, Remlinger, Burke, etc, etc who filled gaps pretty well.

capone0 10-11-2007 04:23 PM

Re: Schuerholz is the freakin president now!

He also kept/got Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux. Drafted Chipper and Andruw. If he could only get a closer as good as John S.

Re: Schuerholz is the freakin president now!

Wynton,

But now he gets to spend his time recruiting Joe Torre for the 2009 season after Bobby retires post-WS championship.

I wish but they're keeping the same staff. So Roger McDowell
is safe for now.

LurchySoprano 10-13-2007 01:21 AM

Re: Schuerholz stepping down

The Braves apparently began to butt heads with Leo by the end of his time in Atlanta and the fact that they didn't put up a lot of fight to him leaving would seem to confirm this.

It sounds like the Braves will sign Glavine and then attempt to spin Renteria/James into a solid #3 starter. A rotation of Smoltz, Hudson, #3 starter, Glavine, and Reyes/Hampton could do some damage in the NL with the current lineup.
