Why is There Flags All Over My Yard
 

I come home from work today to find neon spray paint and little flags all over my yard. Some say "Buried phone" and some say "Buried Electrical Cable" They trail from the front to the back of my house. There is also spray painted symbols in the street in front my my house. I pulled all the flags out of the ground and threw them in the garage. Why would they do this? Actually I have no idea who they is.

One theory; I don't have cable ran to my house. I moved into it when it was new and I have always had satellite. Is the cable company thinking I need it ran to my house? Maybe they have the wrong house?

Why are you asking us? Call up your municipality, first call/one call, utility company if it was on the flags. Someone knows why they were there, and that person is not on 2p2.

There's a ton of reasons it could be, fixing wires that are down there already, or maybe running new pipes/wires. It doesn't really matter though, whatever they're doing is most likely something that should be done. Pulling the flags out just slows them down.

It's the cops. They know where you buried the phone you took from the girl, and the know where you buried the cable you strangled her with. Your only course of action is to take advantage of their sloppy work and leave the state immediately. Be thankful there wasn't one that said, "Buried body". You still have time...

I would chide you for posting this in OOT before calling somebody first, but if you're on the east coast obviously you're not getting somebody in local government on the phone until Monday.

May mean there's some utilty work that needs to be done on the street that will hit your property, although it seems unfathomable (and in a cynical way, totally fathomable) that they wouldn't let you know about this first.

I doubt my municipality has a phone number. I really don't think there is a phone number that I can call and have someone answer, "Yes. City of xxxx. how may I help you?"I doubt it's the electric Co or the phone Co. There was no indication on the flag as to who put them there. They contract that crap out anyway.

What was done is called a utility locate. Someone is going to dig in your area and needs to know where NOT to dig. The flags don't have the names of the company that did the locate because it's done by a third party, and the people doing the site work don't care who put the flags there. All they need to know is what is where. Don't put the flags back in because it's guaranteed that you'll place them in the wrong location and end up getting a phone line cut at the least, and rupture a natural gas line at worst.

It was very ignorant on your part as a homeowner to not know what these flags mean especially when they say on them what they are.

And yes, if you call your local utility company (the company that you pay for electricity/gas), they will know why there was a utility locate done at your house.

Where do you live? In some states, you're allowed to do a civil land survey without prior consent from the landowner. It's not a smart thing to do, as I found out doing that in Kentucky with guns being pulled on us, but technically they are allowed to do it.

whatever area you are talking about is probably not your "yard". you may be next to a utility easement. and your swale, if you have one, is not yours. it is most likely road ROW from back of sidewalk to back of sidewalk. orange it telephone, blue is water, red is power. the arrows or dashes in the street show where the facility is going. as do the flags. it's only locates and there isn't anything you can do about it. if they fail to replace the sod properly you can always bitch about that...

Depending on what they were planning on doing/thinking about doing, sure. Maybe they needed the site laid out before deciding to do whatever they want to do.

Land agents can be quite shady. It wouldn't be the first time where a land agent claims they contacted you or sent you a letter or whatever. I'm not familiar with NC laws so I can't say what they have to do as far as means for contacting you.

Yup. Obviously i've never actually used them either; but my set as a kid had them. They were only used as makeshift soccer goals.
