PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
http://www.scee.presscentre.com/Cont...p;NewsAreaID=2
[ QUOTE ] The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas). [/ QUOTE ] Yet another rather usual business decision from Sony. They seem to believe that price is the only reason the PS3 is not selling well. Will be interesting to see if they are correct. Also unclear is if this will be exclusively a SCEE initiative or if they will follow suit with SCEA. |

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
I have a PS2, backwards compatability means nothing to me. If it were to save me an extra $100-$200 then I'm fine with it. I can always upgrade the HDD on my own.
Edit: I hardly play my PS2 anyway. I'm sure most gamers out there who are playstation fans either still have their PS2 or will buy a used PS2 on ebay for $50 if they really wanted to play a PS2 game. |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
They have to cut prices, it's the only way they have a shot at boosting sales. It'll be interesting to see whether they cut prices in the US as well, a €399 console is still a $565 console in the US, and a £299 console is over $600. I wonder how much the falling dollar makes it tough to compete with Microsoft in the US.

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
Not that I'm against playing videogames at all, but I think you could safely purchase gear for any and every sport you could ever want to play for less than a PS3 costs.

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
Pretty funny they're doing this...one very large reason I purchased a PS3 (Having a 360 and Wii already) is that I wanted to be able to play the old PS1 and PS2 games that I had missed.
I suspect I'm not entirely alone in the backwards compatibility portion of their system being a large part of the reason I bought one. |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
I traded in my PS1 when i got a PS2 and did the same thing with my PS2 when i got a PS3, so the feature is key to me.
|
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
I agree, corpse, I thought originally, bw compat was a selling point for the PS2, and many people bemoaned not being able to play old 64 games on the cube. So they axed their own idea that helped bring them a ton of revenue.. Sigh..
MrWookie.. You win this round. (Though, I don't consider anything where you simply move your arm a sport. Billiards, bowling, darts, horse polo (polo?). If you're not working at at least 25% capacity in regards to what you would work to, say, simply stay alive, it's not a sport. To me.) |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
You've obviously never ridden a horse. Controlling a horse is a workout, especially at game speeds.
|
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
Also, the above would seem to suggest that LK doesn't think that baseball is a sport.
|
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
No, I have ridden a horse, and I have a friend who did the whole proper riding and such. I know it's a huge work out. The joke was just too fun not to make.
I do consider baseball a sport, there's running involved. Not all the time. But when it's your turn, you sure as heck do some moving. That's like saying I don't consider football a sport because you aren't always on the field (unless you're on offense, defense, AND special teams.. that was a fun year.) Thank you, though, for essentially proving my point, in that the only example you could come up with involves buying a living creature that's physically larger than a human. |

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
if i get a ps3 in the future, i'd only get one with backward compatibility; i wouldn't want to have to keep a ps2 around just to play my ps2 games; i don't care that they are 'cheap' or whatever...i don't wanna clutter up my shelf with a ton of different systems

Man, if you don't cover 100% of all possible bases with a post, you people will rip someone a new A hole, won't you?
I wonder how many pages each post would be in a thread if everyone constantly felt the need to view and express every view of every possible angle for any post they make. |

[/ QUOTE ] In my personal opinion, everyone in America should stop playing video games and take up soccer. Instead of becoming fit and healthy, you're all becoming fat pieces of [censored]. But on a serious note the tone of your original post ("Any sport < PS3 costs") implies that the PS3 is ridiculously expensive. You say "100% of your bases", but in this argument there is clearly only 2 bases and you neglected to mention the other one. So I ask you, what is your justification for leaving out the other? HMMMMMM? IS IT BECAUSE I SMELL FANBOY? |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
No arguments there. Well, aside from that Beckham fellow that just moved here.

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
What a suprise this thread turned into a 360 costs a ton less than a PS3 ZOMG!!! You want equivalent systems you will spend about the same. The thing w/ the 360 though is that you can buy each part separately or upgrade later for those that can't save for a system. It's really the only valid argument, but no one really uses it.
Lets try to get back on topic here, what does this do to the avg buyer? How many people really play backwards campatible games after the first couple years a system comes out anyway? I got a launch day PS2 (well near-launch) and I only used that backwards compatibility for about a year and then once more about 6 mos after that when I got into FF7 again. By then the PS2 had a bunch of great games. Personally, I think this was poor timing as the PS3 is in it's infancy and to take away the library of PS2 games really sucks for gamers. But, as others have pointed out, many people already own a PS2 and if not could get one online for $50-$100, which would be similar to how you would have to pay $100 to get wi-fi for the 360. It's not for everyone, but if you want to have it you can. |

Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
Hey look, it is a Dire, lets make some bad remark about Sony thread. Ok, I think we all get it. 360 is better than PS3. Your point is clear. Do you go to things like E3 or Tokyo Gamer Show? No. Ok well unless you have somethine new and informative, or maybe actually interesting, none of us care.
It is called options people. If you buy a car, do you get the basic package, or do you get the alarm, touch screen navigation and expensive stereo system? Some people want backwards compatbility and flash card readers. Some people don't want any. The power of choice. Look into it. Oh btw, just for Dire: http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a79...ingofdeath.jpg |

Interesting article on this topic. The author's perspective is that Sony is doing 40GB / no BC model to effectively create a distinction between the 'low-end' and 'high-end' PS3s, possibly to even create artificial demand for the 'high-ends' this holiday season as Sony announced they will be cancelling the 60GBs in Europe. |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
PS3 Price drop official
This should not be a surprised to most people, but they finally flipped the switch today. No PS2 chip, no SD card slots, and 2 less USBs. It was smart for Sony to keep lowering the price. |
Re: PS3: Lowering price, removing all backwards compatibility
Sony better hope this works, because September sales numbers have them getting crushed. They need something like Halo 3 to boost their numbers, even if it's only temporarily.
