Best place to play and stay in Tunica

Hello all,
I am headed to Tunica for Thanksgiving weekend and wanted to get some advice from people on where to stay and where to play. This will be my first trip down there so need some advice.

I play lots of 2/5 NL and enjoy 15/30 or 20/40 limit. I have heard the 20/40 at the Grand is just crazy.

So where is the best place to stay, play and eat?

Thanks in advance!

Try the search function. There are some old posts covering this.

[/ QUOTE ]Ditto. 2 best poker rooms in Tunica and they are, literally, next door to each other. From the exit of the Gold Strike to the entrance of the Shoe is less than 50 yards. Far and away the 2 best casinos in Tunica.

The Grand is nice unless you get stuck in the off site hotel and have to catch the shuttle to the Grand.

FTW = Wheel of Fortune , or "Fortune the Wheel" as the term was coined. This is a casino game that offers the player the greatest odds over the house, and Horseshoe and Gold Strike both have very favorable rules for this game. Seek it out if they have it running.

It is my firm belief that you are being sarcastic. However, as sarcasm is frequently difficult to spot on the Internet, and given that OP is new to these forums, I will take the chance that he did not get your joke.

FTW = For The Win. It is a term commonly used to denote strong positive feelings towards the subject of the term. Saying that the Gold Strike is "FTW" is to profess one's belief that the this is a fine casino and should be frequented at every opportunity.

As to the casinos in Tunica and this writer's opinion, I would agree that the GS/HS combo can not be beat. There are advantages at the Grand or Sam's Town, but on the whole, GS/HS is better. The prices are similar, as are the comps. And the games are typically much softer at GS/HS than at the others. (Sam's, in fact, was pretty solid - even on the 1/3 - when I was there last month. It seemed to hover between 6 and 8 regulars at the table at all times.)

What you will want to do is to call the GS and ask for the Poker Room. Book your room through there so you can get the poker rate. (At last check the PR for most hotels in Tunica was $35/night on weekends.) You'll need to play 5 hours/day at GS to "earn" this reduced rate, but that's pretty easy.

For comps, you can go to the desk in the poker room and request a meal comp once every eight hours or so and you'll get a coupon to get your meal free at any of the restaurants in the hotel.

Enoy and good luck!

Thanks for the info all, please add more if you have it. I did a search looks like the HS/GS will be the combo that I will take. I need to call and see if I can get the rate and will just have to go from there with it.

Am hoping that if all works out well I will make another visit for the Circuit event in Jan.

Thanks again and I will report back when I return.

Ok a follow up ?
Do they allow headphones and mp3 players while playing poker?
I am from KC and some places do but most do not.

The month of January will be slammed in Tunica with 2 major tourneys in town. If you plan to be there, you should have made your room reservations already.

Headphones and MP3 players are fine. Cellphones are iffy. I have an MP3 player on my cell and have used it with no problems. But if you're playing a hand, you are not allowed to talk on the phone.

Since school started I haven't been to Tunica (stuck playing in MO with the loss limit ugh), have all the $1/$2 NL games changed to $1/$3 NL???

Also my buddies and I like to spew at the 50cent roulette table at the sheraton is that still there? please say yes..

On a side note to the OP I don't know how deep you like to play but sometimes the GS NL games play super deep esp in Jan (last year I was waiting and saw no less than $20,000 on the table at the 1/2 game) So keep that in mind Hollywood used to have a $200 max buy in 1/2 game that was always fun and soft...

[/ QUOTE ] You won't find 20-40 at the Grand at all. The largest game you'll find there is 4-8. All the red chip action in Tunica is at Horseshoe. 15-30 goes Monday-Thursday and 20-40 goes all weekend. The Gold Strike spreads a real good 1-2 NL with no cap. Horseshoe spreads 1-3 NL. ($100-$300) The 2-5 game is uncapped with a $200 minimum. Most people these days are staying at Gold Strike because of the hotel and doing most of their playing at Horseshoe. The poker rate at Horseshoe is $30 and $40 but the room is actually at the Veranda Hotel at the Grand. If you have anymore questions post here or send me a PM. I work at Horseshoe so be sure to look me up when you get in town.

Peppering the board with chips is the nutz for sure I don't care if it is a leak...

Thanks for the info Chipr77, I'm fairly sure I'll be down over thanksgiving break and def Jan. Do you guys spread any games other than holdem and 1-5 stud. preferably something smaller than the 25-50 plo game that I have seen a few times...

6-12 Omaha H/L has been going quite requently. If you dont mind a table full of nits it's a good game.

Kayaker,
I really think Sam's town is the softest game that I played in in Toontown.

OP,
I went in Jan & July and posted trip reports on my blog about it if you want to look some of that up. Try the Saturday tourney at Sam's Town and the cash game afterwards, there were no regs there from what I could tell. I've always had trouble beating the GS & HS games, they are swimming w/ regs. GS has a good room rate and they don't follow up with you much on how much time you spent in their poker room, there is no checkin really, so they can't monitor your time there. GL

Does it play with a kill and does it go mostly weekends or mostly through the week?

Thanks

hmmm... 6/12 Omaha H/L full of nits... sounds like a dream come true lol. J/K Thanks for the info I might check it out when I'm down there, but I don't really like to feel depressed while I'm at the table, and I'm afraid I might jump off the big horseshoe if I play in that game.

Also is the 1-5 stud game still the old timers... I loved playing in that game everyone calling me son and a couple of them telling stories.. Good times

LOL. I play in that game sometimes & they call me son too...but I'm not that young.

That game can be pretty juicy at times if:
a. you don't mind playing stud
b. like calling stations
c. don't mind the mumblin' & bitchin' about you betting the whole $5 on every street.

They all must hate Moneymaker. Before 2002ish it seems like there was always 8-10 stud games going and 1 LHE game going.

Re: Best place to play and stay in Tunica

One of the best times I've ever had at a poker table was at the 1-5 stud game. I sat down with a rack of whites and as soon as I sat down they all looked at me and said "this isn't a holdem table son those games are over there" pointing to the other tables. I replied "I know, I just wanted to learn a new game". The all laughed and started to tell me the strategy and all this about stud... I just played along like I didn't know what I was doing, seem to be betting like I didn't know what was going on. When I would drag a pot everyone acted like they were my grandfather saying see now you are getting the hang of this, good job son. It was sooo funny. Then they preceded to tell me about all the girls they would get if they were my age and how I should try and pick up every waitress that walked by. It was the greatest...

This is true, they do rarely bug you about it, but it IS against the rules. I'm not sure why they ignore it.

That's what the buddy I went down there with said when we were deciding where to go. Unfortunately, most of the regulars from Hollywood were at ST that weekend. The impression I was given was that the move was more or less permanent.

Hollywood has regulars??? I wouldn't think they could make enough money there... cap buy in, away from the major casinos and all... When I go with some of my friends and they don't wanna put up alot of money to gamble we go there...

Re: Best place to play and stay in Tunica

Your guess is as good as mine. Just going by what they told me. There were at least seven or eight of them variously through the weekend. Apparently something happened to hack off one of the floors and a couple of the regulars got bent out of shape and left. The other regulars followed them out the door and they all moved over to ST.

I don't know the specifics of what happened, but I do know a purposefully bent duece played a role. Things escalated from there.

There are a lot of regulars that pick a casino because they can play without risking there money. A lot of people go to the poker room because they have no place else to go.

Like I said, I don't have the specifics. I'm just going by what I was told - by a poker player, so take that into consideration. It was early September when I was there, so I'd guess it was some time in August. They hadn't been at ST terribly long, but long enough to start to know the dealers and floors.
