A challenge from a long time ago.

When one of the poker sites was starting up, they offered anyone who would sign up for an account $50.

I think one of the old posters here, Mike Haven, organized a challenge where you took the $50, and play .50/1.00 until you won 50 big bets. Then you moved up to 1-2. Everytime you won 50 big bets, you moved up. If you lost 25 big bets at any level, then you moved down until you had won 50 big bets again.

Some posters made it from .50/1.00 up to 15/30 and never looked back. Anyway, the 15 big bet challenge last month, was one where volatility was probably going to make it so almost everyone would fail.

I thought that I would try this this month on one of the tables I was playing, and see how far I could go. Right now, I'm up 4 big bets at .50/1.00.

Maybe if you are primarily a shorthanded player, you could double the bankroll requirements and start with 100, and move up when you win 100 and move down when you lose 50.

Oh, I just won a pot, now I am up 8 BBs.

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

I hope someone else joins me, so I have some competition.
after day 1, (its nap time, and I have to go to work later),
I am up 16 BBs at ..50/1.00. The overwhelming thing I noticed, is the lack of aggression. My preflop aggression, was pretty much higher than any two other players added together. And the lack of aggression means that handreading is a lot easier, when your opponents wake up, there are just a limited number of options that they might have, unless they are making a bluff, and that hasn't been happening at this level.

The other thing that I haven't had to deal with in a while, is making a river value bet on a coordinated board, against a 100% vpip player. I bet------what could he have? whew, he called.

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

It may be a good way to get started up again. I might give it a shot. To be honest I've been on a bit of a break; from one day to the next, poker suddenly lost my interest. It's amazing how much time you have left to do other things, like ... like ... well, ok

So I can start with $100 at 0.5/1 6max, and move up when I hit $200. I take it you move down once you drop to $100 again?

current standing: 65 hands into the challenge, 30 BB down. -47 BB/100

I think this is great. I don't play as often as you guys, but how bout we all pick the smae site to make it more consistent. Whaddya think?

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

Just play on whatever site you play on. Right now, I play mostly on two, but sometimes, I wander over to a third. I plan on just keeping a seperate total in my logbook, because I will probably just open a seperate 'challenge' table on whatever site I am playing on.

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

Up 41 BBs after two days. Probably done for today, My wife URGENTLY needs to go to the mall. Its ok, I sorta need to go there, but I know that my 15 minute errand is not going to be the determining factor about when we leave.

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

Done for the evening. 1859 hands total, +84.5 BB @ .50/1.00, 4.5 BB/100 running (and playing!) good. Much more motivation to play good for this challenge. Every BB I drop I feel sorry because I'm further from the goal, so I won't spew. Cool.

I'm way too degen to care about small stakes online so I'll definitely do this.

I have about $800 in my online account. I'll try and start over the weekend. at .50-1

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

85 hands into session=+ 27 BB
hand #485= -29
I think I am going insane LOL
my personal Fav was when UTG on one table limped with A2s. Flopped bottom pair on a Q high board against my KK with 4 other players and called a bet and a riase just to hit an ace on the turn.
Now I know why .50-$1.00 is a challenge.
I compare it to that 80s arcade game where you have to shoot all of the zombies walking around and each level, there are more and more an more until thery swarm you.
ROFL- I think I just took some crazy pills

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

I think you can bet/fold. With the fourstraight out there, and the action on the turn, I think you aren't getting raised by any hand worse than yours. But you will get a lot of calls by worse hands, that won't bet.

Bob T. 10-03-2007 04:14 AM

progress.

Made it to 1-2!

Still downtown in Value Betting City.

[/ QUOTE ]It depends. On .5/1 there are a lot of outrageous river bluffs etc. (or maybe not so if we bet/fold) I don't like folding any kind of two-pair in a large pot, so take any line that can't lead to a fold. But if this guy is a typical station it's ok. Since he's unknown I'd c/c.

Cool, I'll be joining you shortly. Only I'm going by 100 BB levels at 6max (up 85)

Re: A challenge from a long time ago.

Well I had a few bucks on Stars left asnd decided to play .25-50 yesterday and ran it up 78 BBs at 6 max tables one table at a time. I never did play online much at all and still don't play that much but maybe I'll give this a go when I get some more quiche going.

Re: progress.

This is a great challenge, good idea bob. I'm trying to move up quickly in short handed games anyway so I think i'll give this ago. I'm starting at 3/6 though because that's my next step, i've already hit 100bb at 2/4 for this month. Horray for heaters!

Bob T. 10-05-2007 05:29 PM

Re: progress.

Cool, good luck.

I Don't know if it is related, but because I've been playing some in lower limit games than I am used to, which are places where you can really punish people with value betting, I seem to be running good so far this month in my regular games, and it feels like my value betting game is sharper than usual. (if i was more ambitious, I would probably figure out where the periods were supposed to go in the previous sentence )

Frond 10-05-2007 07:35 PM

Re: progress.

One interesting note is that playing the .25 game on stars, I jumped on a full ringer for a while and it was like the old days from what I have heard. 7 to the flop!!! Weird

Bob T. 10-06-2007 01:04 AM

Deprogress.

Back to .50/1.00
