ESPN says Mets announcers are the best

And if ESPN says it, it must be true, right?

Story is here.

This may be the BOS homer in me, but aren't Remy and Orsillo the best announcing team? It is pretty rare for me to laugh at anything announcers say, but these guys aren't annoying and they are very funny.

I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Gary, Keith, and Ron. There isn't a crew I rather listen to. Yeah Gary has said a dumb thing or two in the past but over 150+ games that they do I expect it. The guys do a hell of a job and I love listening to them every night. They make it fun, interesting, and I've learned more about the game listning to Keith and Ron than I had all those years of Fran Healey and McCarver(ughhhh). I also love the occasional appearance of Ralph Kiner.

I think the Mets are as good a choice as any. I like the BOS crew and the ATL crew (total bias).

My sample size is pretty small, but BOS and OAK are my favorites. Despites lots of Mets-loving friends, I've never heard their booth.

No love for the Yankees booth?

I mean, Michael Kay, am i right guys?

at least it is almost october and I get the best in the business at hockey (Emrick) and Michael Kay goes away for another 6 months.

lol it's like this thread was made with me in mind.

LOL GARY, SHEA STADIUM IS SO BIG!! "BIG SHEA!" PITCHER'S PARK! HILARIOUS! CITIZEN'S BANK PARK IS SUCH A BANDBOX. LOL EQUALLY HILARIOUS.

Larry Anderson and Scott Fransky on the radio. Harry Kalas, Wheels and Sarge on the television broadcast. for the win.

but I'm biased.

Re: ESPN says Mets announcers are the best

As a Mets' fan in LA, my main baseball outlet is MLB.tv. That means I get a lot of the SNY crew, but also a wide sampling of the rest of the local crews around the league.

The SNY crew is the best. Relative to the average crew, they are extraordinarily unbiased and non-homerish. Yes, they might sound a little more excited if the Mets make a big play or something, but they're always very fair when it comes to umpiring judgements or player performance stuff.

Gary is just an ok PBP guy, but that's fine, because he mostly just stays out of the way of Ron and Keith, who are both fantastic. They are not anything like the standard ex-player announcers.

Euro's bandbox riff is stupid. Every announce team across the country refers to CBP that way. They're not trying to rewrite comedy recordbooks; it's just an easy way to remind and/or inform people that some stats and analysis requires park context. Something like 20% of HRs at CBP would be flyouts at the average park (more like 35% at Shea). That is huge, and it would be irresponsible to NOT account for it in the commentary.

Over the course of the season, I've mostly forgotten the average crap that passes for the majority of local announce teams, but a few that have stuck out:

- Cincy's seemed pretty good, IIRC. For a team with no shot at anything and a lot of team-direction decisions to be made in the offseason, they put together a good, informative broadcast.

- Washington's are ok. I think I liked them better earlier in the year, before they said some standard stupid stuff, but for the most part, I think they're fine to listen to.

- San Diego has the absolute worst crew. These guys are just [censored] idiots. It was torture listening to the inanity that passed for analysis with these guys (ie: a 5 minute argument about which celebrity does some bench player kinda look like if you squint a little bit?)

- TBS. The local FSN Braves guys don't seem that bad, but the TBS crew is plain terrible.

- YES. This is obvious.

Haha ... I was waiting for a Matt and Mud bashing. I love our guys, they grow on you. Part of their attractiveness is that Mud is just constantly silly. Someone watching them for the first time will question whether they are watching baseball or the worst comedy act of all time.

I don't watch a lot of AL, so I can't comment on Kyleb's Cleveland pick. You're right about these 2, though. I have a friend who's a CWS fan, and I get all the local Angels games, and they're unlistenable.

The Cubs made the biggest mistake in the world firing Steve Stone. Their TV broadcast is awful. Somehow, their radio broadcast is even worse and may be even more unlistenable than Hawk and DJ.

Not s big fan of the CLE announcers, either radio or TV.
I miss Herb Score!!

I guess I'm in a mood to be a fan of mostly competent but vanilla announcers because Steve Physioc of LAA and Bob Carpenter of WAS are two of the first guys I think of.

Len Kasper and Bob Brenley with CHC are okay imo. Don't quite get the hate on those guys. I think their call is mostly enjoyable to listen to.

There just aren't as many PBP guys that blow me away anymore really.

Through Mlbtv I get a lot of different ones as well and I have to admit I like them too.
More than the Braves announcers and much more than most of the different crews around the nl.

I absolutely HATE the phillies announcers and the nats, with Sutton there now, are pretty unbearable too.

I got the MLBtv. Vin Scully is all class, I hate the Dodgers but he's great. Padres announcers they do grow on you.

Mud, "Doesn't Wilson Betemit look bigger this year Matty?"
Matt, "He does"
Mud, "You know why that is Matty?"
Matt, hesitantly, like something bad is coming, "Umm...no, why is that Mud"
Mud, "Betta Meat"

Best Don and Jerry moment, two years ago, they are working an afternoon spring training game and the sox are down 13-1 in the 4th. Orioles load the bases and someone hit a bomb to left.

Remy: "Oh Jeeeeeeeesus, now look at this."
Don: "Woah, easy Jerry."
Remy: "Like anyone's still tuned in to this garbage."

Vin Scully seems to be widely revered among his colleagues, if not all the fans. I've never really understood this, but also only heard him occasionally.

I'm guessing that much of the admiration he receives from his colleagues, though, is due to his being "technically" good. In other words, I assume he's considered very good at the basics of providing the pertinent information in a timely, regular manner. Other than that, I really don't get his great appeal, though I seem to be in the minority on this.

[/ QUOTE ]

do you have a reference to cite for that statistic? or did you just pull it out of your Gary Cohen-loving, bandbox-hating ass?

my "riff" is not stupid. they are indeed trying to rewrite comedy record books or they wouldn't consistently make the same stupid jokes about it and all chuckle at it as if it's still funny. or if it ever were funny.

and sure, I'm sure some announce crews may mention that balls fly out of CBP better than at most yards, but it's just a passing comment. The SNY guys love to say it and think it's hilarious every time they get to work in a joke about it.

it's the same way that they take shots at the Phils bullpen. LOOK AT YOUR OWN [censored] BULLPEN, GARY COHEN. WHAT HAVE THEY DONE FOR YOU LATELY?

so, in sum, no it would not be "irresponsible" NOT to account for that. like, saying Jose Reyes would have 30 HRs if he played in CBP is ridiculous. the guy has nowhere near the power of Jimmy Rollins, yet the Mets announcers try to paint that picture.

I'll conclude with [censored] Gary Cohen, because he sucks.

and to re-address your first statement, my riff was not stupid. nothing I say is stupid. in fact, YOU'RE stupid, you stupid idiotface.
