Are your fingerprints on file?

I've been watching too much CSI and reading too many mysteries lately. They'll always mention AFIS, the Automated Fingerprint Identification System as a way to identify unknown persons.

But I've always wondered just how extensive the network is. One book I read said that only about 1 in 50 people have their fingerprints on file. But that book is about 10 years old, so I don't know how accurate the system is.

So for you Americans, if your fingerprints were found at a crime scene, could you be identified? Feel free to add why they'd be in the system.

For me, I've been fingerprinted twice: Department of Defense, and state bar admission.

No. I've never been fingerprinted, but have been arrested twice.

I used to volunteer at OPP (Orleans Parish Prisons) during college, and I had to get my fingerprints taken for that. So if I do ever commit a crime, yeah, they'd know who I am in a second. Unless of course I chew off my fingerprints beforehand...or wear gloves.

Didn't vote cause Canadian, but did get finger printed when taking the LSAT, don't know if that would be on file for cops, don't really care.

Also, you suck for watching CSI.

Re: Are your fingerprints on file?

This job really isn't how shows like CSI make it out to be. When I first joined the force, I assumed there was semen on everything - there was some huge semen database that had every bad guy's semen in it. There isn't. That doesn't exist. It'd be nice. Like that crime scene today. If that guy had ejaculated and then punched you in the face, we'd have a real good shot at catching him.

I'm not sure. I was fingerprinted when I was 15, I'm now 33. Anyone know if fingerprints change? I doubt they were scanned into a computer at that time.

nope.

i'm really surprised that so many people have been fingerprinted. you all sure these went to the police and weren't just for your immediate group to have? there's no way the police have prints of 70% of the population

i vaguely remember having somebody come to my 3rd grade class and taking prints. i don't know if they were cops, or if they were just showing us how that kind of stuff works, or what.

i also had the cops search my apartment about 5 years when i was reported missing by my parents (long story). don't know if they would have taken prints off something just to have them on file.

ouch, I always thought this was a horrible thing to do to your kids. The chances of this actually helping if you were kidnapped have to be small. It seems like a good way for the government to use scare tatics to grow the fingerprint database...

California medical license way back when.
Nevada concealed carry permit.
Brought a shotgun to Maui once to do some trapshooting and decided it was +EV to register it vs. possible confiscation.

<---army, state Gaming permits, and one arrest.

(EDIT: Since no one else mentioned military service, maybe they don't routinely print everyone. I had a security clearance, maybe that's why they took mine. It was so long ago, I don't recall.)

yeah, it should have been obvious what it was really for. Maybe my mom just thought i'd grow up to be a criminal and felt she owed it to society cuz she felt guilty for giving birth to me
