What\'s the most expensive thing you\'ve ever lost?

Today, through no one else's fault (or stupidity) other than my own, I lost my Nintendo DS. I don't want to get into the stupid details, but basically I just left the bag out in public accidentally. Not only that, but I had some games and a carrying case and all that, so when you add everything up, it was probably a ~$225 loss or so.

Yea, I know some of you wipe your ass with $225, but now that I think about it, that's probably the most expensive thing I've ever lost, which I guess means I've been pretty lucky.

I don't want this thread degenerating into stories about how your $50k car was stolen, or how your gambling-degenerate uncle stole $3k out of your dresser drawer. I'm asking about expensive things that you lost all on your own due to your stupidity or carelessness (or both).

I want to feel better about my loss today.

in new orleans for my bachelor party, i go out and have a great time. taking pics of me w/ topless girls all night. have a great time. at the end of night my brother says we have to go to a strip club. i dont want to but go along,

when we leave as soon as i hit the front lobby area i realize i left my digital camera on the table. i turn around and go back to the table 3 minutes later and it's gone. im drunk screaming at all the tables since one of them stole it and the rest knew who stole it. i leave w/out the camera. been 3 years and im still pissed off.

Re: What\'s the most expensive thing you\'ve ever lost?

I lost an umbrella in college. Left it under a desk on a rainy day, remembered it a few minutes later, but no surprise it was gone (really nasty outside).

When I was about 5 or 6 I lost a mickey mouse Velcro wallet bouncing on a bunch of beds while my parents were mattress shopping. I think it had like $15 in it.

Since this is the best I can come up with, I think I'm pretty good at not losing stuff.

I could not have accidentally come off, it was tight. I used to wear it all the time, then stopped wearing it for a month, then started again when my wife 'caught' me. It was lost on vacation. I don't remember taking it off; my best guess is that I took it off to go through the metal detector (not only stupid, but completely unnecessary) at the airport, and left it in the bowl. Like $800 value IIRC.

I once thought I had lost my wedding ring (incidentally, also Pt) and went crazy on a MARC train looking for it. Turned out I had taken it off the night before (very unusual) and had not put it back on. It was a terrible feeling. ddubois, if you actually lost it, I really feel for you.

So, as it is, the most expensive thing I ever lost was probably a radio. Way back in the day, yo.

I'm sure there is something I'm forgetting, but I've lost a few cell phones. Brand new they are like 3-5 hundred, but I usually get a discount as part of a contract, and they are used, so I don't know what the real value is.

I've lost a couple passports that I probably could have sold to some terrorist.

Woke up hungover and without my eyeglasses, worth $300 or so. Apparently lost em stumbling home from a pub down the street in the pouring rain.

I bet I have lost $400 worth of lighters over the years. I've come to find out a buddy's wife regularly steals lighters and has a massive stash at home. I suspect there are many lighter kleptos.

Re: What\'s the most expensive thing you\'ve ever lost?

when i was in 8th grade i went to go smoke for the first time ever with a couple buddies in the woods by our middle school during the summer. leave my bike at the bottom of the hill, go up and get settled in a chill spot. literally smoke 12 bowls of schwag out of a wooden pipe my friend made in wood class. absolutely out of my mind, we hear a guy yelling something at the bottom of the hill, as he gets closer we can hear him "I KNOW WHAT YOU KIDS ARE DOING I'M CALLING THE COPS" just our luck, some sort of kindergarten dance function was being held that night at the middle school.

we absolutely book it up the woods into a golf course, never stopping once, running probably a mile and a half to my house. we get there completely out of breath and i realize [censored], i just left my brand new $450 GT chrome racing bike at the bottom of the hill.

i abandon my friends who were just laughing hysterically at me. run all the way back to the middle school, enter the building. this was so surreal i can not even explain. there are a few parents sitting at a desk right in front of me. i look at them, look to my left where out of the corner of my eye i see a bike. the bathroom door is open, with my bike perfectly placed in the back of the bathroom. the same guy says "the cops are on their way" or something like that, and i just book it out of there.

i waited 2 weeks to report my bike stolen and ended up getting to look in the police station for it and also being escorted around town by a cop looking at various "police garage" locations. obviously never found it. this tilts me to this day whenever i think about it, because this bike was absolutely sick, and also because i probably couldn't have handled the situation any worse.

although probably stolen, i could have lost an ipod as well.

left my ti-89 calculator sitting on a table in a library type place at school. Left the room for a few minutes and when I came back it was replaced with a ti-83. I kept it for a week or so but was pissed and lost it anyway, now i use a ti-12 or something and it barely adds.

Lost my Grad Ring and left my sunglasses in the Bahamas. Probably similar value.
Also not for much money, but I bought a USB numpad. Ripped it upon and lost the USB, still haven't found it. I lose a lot of stuff, but have never lost something in the process of opening it.

Re: What\'s the most expensive thing you\'ve ever lost?

maybe not the most expensive thing, but the dumbest way i ever lost something is this: I went to gas station, and then paid for gas. I then walked slowly back to my car and thought about things that amused me ( I'm assuming i was thinking about that at least) I then got in my car and drove away. About 10 minutes later I realized that I needed gas. At which point I was like "[censored], FCCKINN IDIOT, I just drove off without filling up my tank." I then went back to the gas station, and discovered that someone had filled up their car without my gas ( They run good)

Nope, I don't have the stripper club gene. If you said blow, you would have been closer.

Fell out of my pocket from the car to the house.

Or she took it and spent it at strip clubs

most expensive things other people lost:

my brother found a tag hauer watch on the ground at an hfstival a while ago. >$500 watch.

he also worked at a pool. One morning he came back and there was a shirt and fossil watch (~100) there. Obv someone hopped the fence and prob almost got caught and took off. Now my brother has a nice tag hauer and i have a nice fossil.

I'm pretty good with not losing things. I've had the same wallet since I was 13, never lost a cell phone or sunglasses that were >$15. I guess the most expensive things are clothes, like a $60 sweatshirt or something.
