New Costco Plasma - Dropped It = Cracked Case > Best Play?

I'm super-agitated right now, so I'll try to keep this short:

Bought a 50" plasma at Costco, and the thing is freaking heavy. It wouldn't fit in my truck because the box was too big.

Costco employee helping me load it suggests we take it out of the box. According to him, they do it all the time. So we slip the top part of the box off. It's a tight fit but we get it in there.

Drive home, and the wife and I unload it off the truck and onto the driveway. The corners on the bottom of the box are flimsy and won't hold, so we take the tv out of all remaining packaging.

We pick it up to bring it in and the wife says she "doesn't have it". I say "okay, let's put it down". I didn't know she was balancing it on her knee at the time. As I put my side down, it slipped off of her knee and the corner of the tv slammed onto the remainder of the cardboard box lying in the driveway.

It made a loud cracking noise, and at that point I knew it was [censored].

</five minutes of bitching back and forth>

We got the tv in the house and set it down. It is noticeably cracked in the corner, but not as much as I anticipated; regardless, I like my stuff to be perfect, and this tv no longer is, and I haven't even plugged the damn thing in yet.

Anyway, I plug it in. It powers on fine, but since I don't have cable yet (new house) I couldn't check any channels. The user menus look fine, and all of that seems to work, but whatever... This freaking sucks.

The wife suggests we take it back and say it was like that when we got it home. A friend of mine agrees. I'm not comfortable doing it, but I don't know what else to do, besides suck it up and deal with it.

The reason I went to Costco is because I understand that they have a great return policy for electronics. Apparently, you can "trade-in" your old stuff for new stuff. Unfortunately, I don't think I can do that with this tv a year from now, since it's damaged. I either have to act on this immediately, or just keep a damaged tv, not knowing how long it will last. According to the Costco guys, you're not supposed to even lay a plasma on it's side, let alone drop the [censored] thing.

Help me OOT... What would you guys do? If you would take it back and report it damaged upon inspection, would you have a detailed explanation, or would you keep it as simple as possible? I'm not good at this stuff at all, although my friend said he would go with me, and he's pretty hardcore with negotiating and whatnot.

Thanks.

The fact that it's dishonest and I'm not good at being dishonest is what makes it difficult.

If returning it and demanding a new one is the obvious play, I need some sort of plan.

I'm afraid that stores deal with people trying to get away with this all the time, and are therefore on the look out for scams like this.

Yea. You played this pretty bad all around. Girls are generally worthless when it comes to moving stuff, you should have gotten your friend to help you then.

What kind of truck doesn't accomodate a 50" plasma?

An '05 Expedition, for starters. Also, the Expedition is bigger than my '99 Tahoe, so that doesn't cut it either.

that's not a truck, it's a [censored] SUV. i hate when people call these ugly stupid [censored] things trucks now that everyone thinks they're lame (which they are)... you don't drive a truck you drive a soccer wench bitchmobile that gets [censored] mileage and isn't good for anything but carting brats around and taking up extra parking spaces. any actual truck would have no problem hauling your stupid TV and this never would have happened in the first place.

oh and to answer your other question i am obv for returning the TV if you can pull it off but it is clear that you are going to be a nervous sweaty vag about it which means it won't work, so don't bother.

A plan? OK I'll bite.

Step 1: Go back to the store with the TV
Step 2: Return the TV

First of all, no, because most people don't drop their TVs immediately after purchasing them. Second of all, they don't care anyway, because they're going to have arrangements with the manufacturer that allows them to send back equipment like this and get a new one in return. The store isn't taking a loss on this. The ability to do things like this is one of the reasons people still buy from reputable B&M stores instead of purchasing everything at cost from some shady website, take advantage of it.

Re: New Costco Plasma - Dropped It = Cracked Case > Best Play?

Assuming the TV was still packed up enough to hide the spot where the damage is when you left the store, the obvious play is call the store say "wtf this tv is cracked" and ask them wtf they're gonna do about it.

Ideal situation, they bring you another one in a truck to your house and take away the old one.

edit: If you really can't tell a lie, list the crappy one on eBay/craigslist with a decently high reserve and see how much you can get for it to offset the price of a new one. Make sure it's fully functional obviously. Depending on how bad the damage is, I wouldn't be surprised if you find people happy to live with some cosmetic defects for a nice discount.

this is really unethical and twisted. Costco is a great company. They deal honestly with their customers, and pay their employees well. The prices they offer are awesome, and they have a fantastic return policy. I think they deserve better than this. Your wife and your friend are being selfish, or stupid, or both.

edit: I'm not saying your wife and your friend are scum. A lot of people seem to have the attitude that it's ok to rip off companies, and they don't think about how they are actually screwing real people, like the employees of the company.

Pretty sure it will be a hit to the manufacturer more than CostCo.

Another option is calling up CostCo and telling them the truth, and ask if they can do something for you. You never know they might take it back w/ no problems, or give you a big discount on another one and sell the old one on the floor as cosmetically damaged.

Re: New Costco Plasma - Dropped It = Cracked Case > Best Play?

Also, FWIW burn-in was immediate. Going through the available user menus, windows would pop up on different parts of the screen. When those windows were closed, a ghost-image remained for 10-20 seconds before it faded out.

I know plasmas need 200 hours or so of light use before you should play video games on them and whatnot, but are they THIS sensitive out of the box?
