A Tribe Called Quest: Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders Eric B & Rakim: Paid in Full or Follow the Leader |
Re: Old School Rap Questions
It takes a Nation
Midnight Marauders(wish I wouldn't lose this so often, on my 5th cd of it ) Follow the Leader |
Re: Old School Rap Questions
Fear of a Black Planet FTW!
|

Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation Of Millions or Fear of a Black Planet A Tribe Called Quest: Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders Eric B & Rakim: Paid in Full or Follow the Leader [/ QUOTE ] First of all, these are like 6 of the best rap albums of all time. For PE, I prefer Black Planet but it's really close. For Tribe, Low End Theory and it's not very close. For Eric B & Rakim, I'd take Follow the Leader but really they are both equally awesome. Three more good ones: Ice-T: Freedom of Speech or Original Gangster? Cypress Hill: Cypress Hill or Black Sunday? Ice Cube: Death Certificate or Predator? (well okay, Predator wins the last one) |

Isn't Amerikkka's Most Wanted supposed to be Ice Cube's highly touted album? Though Death Certificate and Predator are v good obv. |

Re: Old School Rap Questions
All of them. Tribe is my favorite group of all time... I really like MM the best (love the songs and the trippy girl voice at the end of the tracks).
If you want to hear NAS's sick first debut, check out the Main Source albumn "breaking atoms". The song is called "live at the barbeque". You should also try KRS ONE's & DJ Scott LaRock "Boogie Down Productions" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGz3GdPHKzs,and theres tons more... |

Re: Old School Rap Questions
Illmatic and you're an [censored] if you think ITW is even close to close.
|
Re: Old School Rap Questions
"Low End Theody not close" is garbage. Ther's tons of good songs on Midhnight Marauders: Award Tour, Electric Relaxation (arguably the best ATCQ ever), Oh my God, We can get Down and the list goes on.
|
Re: Old School Rap Questions
yeah none of these are not close...OG is IceTs best though overall.
Also, shouldnt this title read: NEW School Rap Question? |

Illmatic and you're an [censored] if you think ITW is even close to close. [/ QUOTE ] i think you're wrong, i think it is actually pretty close. i listen to IWW much more these days. that album is sick good. when i want to introduce someone to nas i play them it was written, it is more accessible to today's listeners. i think people don't want to admit it because illmatic is considered such a classic and it was written is viewed as a more commercial record, but the flows on it was written are so [censored] sick. |
Re: Old School Rap Questions
That's exactly why I think it isn't close. Trackmasters blow, even for pop production. The beats on Illmatic are just epic.

HAY GUYS I WONDER IF DIDS HAS POSTED IN THIS THREAD YET.

I like Death Certificate considerably better than Predator FWIW.

Also, I guess I'm retarded because my iTunes says I listen to MM more than LET. |

No love for De La Soul? [/ QUOTE ] I like to point out that Buhloone Mind State is a very underrated album. Question I posed to Soul Daddy - What's the general rap fan consensus on Tribe? I am a casual rap fan, but really liked Tribe back in the day (also think Low End Theory is better, but I [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Electric Relaxation). Maybe there's some East Coast bias in there, I was listening to them when I lived in NJ/CT/NY. I even own Q-Tip solo albums (they are not that good). -Al |
Re: Old School Rap Questions
Same question (not to derail this thread but am listening to "Quality" right now so was curious) about Talib Kweli...

Re: Old School Rap Questions
Rap fans generally dig Tribe, save for Beats, Rhymes and Life, which is pretty suspect.
I have a theorum that states that almost every hip-hop group ever with 4 plus albums got better with the 2nd release and then got much worse with each subsquent album. Outkast potentially being the only exception. People are more mixed on Kweli. He gets points from coffee shop heads for his topics, but up until his most recent stuff his delivery has been really iffy to me. It took him years to not sound just flat nervous on the mic. |
Re: Old School Rap Questions
Have you got Eardrum yet? It sounds much more commercial. Just look at Hot Thing ft Wil.i.am, it sounds like it was made to be popular. I have to say that even though this album is still fresh Id put it up there with his best works. Kweli stuff for me goes - Black Star > Quality > Eardrum > Reflection Eternal > Beautiful Struggle
obv Mos Def helps make blackstar my favourite but still Kweli held his own on it. |

Re: Old School Rap Questions
Wu-Tang fails the test because Enter the 36 is better than anything by a huge margin, unless you count the solos and then it gets confusing.

Illmatic, eh?

What about Run-D.M.C. ? I think their albums just better and better. RIP Jason Mizell aka Jam Master Jay |

WHAT THE [censored] JOKER THAT IS THE WORST OPINION EVER. [/ QUOTE ] Not really. I think cases can be made for both. I'd say "Wrong Ni**a to F*ck Wit" off DC is the best track on either record, but I just love "When Will They Shoot?" and "We Had To Tear This Mothafu**a Up" not to mention "Wicked," "It Was a Good Day," and "Check Yoself" I mean come on. Re: Old School Rap Questions
The production on Predator makes the discussion a non starter in the first place, but Death Certificate is a top 10 all time classic to me. Predator isn't close in any way shape or form.
