Is there a worse 3-0 team in America than Texas?

I watched the game at the alumni association gathering at a bar here in Atlanta, and everybody walked out with their heads down like we'd taken a beating. Against a team capable of even competent QB play, we would have.

Aside from the DT rotation, every unit on the UT defense looks suspect. With Brian Orakpo hurt we have no rush end and really struggle to generate pressure. Our linebacking play, the perennial Achilles heel of Mack Brown's defenses, looks as bad as it's been in a while - for years the book on Texas has been to throw lots of counters, screens and misdirection at them, anything to make the LBs take false steps or over-commit, and that's been as true as ever this year. Safeties often look sort of lost in zone coverage and we seem to be out of stud corners - Foster and Palmer are perennial backups and it's hard to believe they're up to the challenge.

UT's offense is even more frustrating because so many of its defects are systematic. O-coordinator Greg Davis, a favorite whipping boy among UT fans, is really enjoying himself this year. Major Applewhite was a coach on the field who composed a lot of off-the-cuff magic. Ricky Williams, Cedric Benson and Vince Young were dominant talents who had to be catered to. Now, with a cast of finesse personnel and a quarterback who does exactly what he's told, Greg is having the time of his life dialing up what is apparently his passion - junky ass WR screens and one-hard quick hitches until the end of time.

Too-simple finesse offenses with no power component that make every third and two an adventure make this man's dick hard as a rock, for whatever reason. We don't have the horses to line 'em up and shove - Texas's string of behemoth O-lines is done, and this one is particularly suspect at center and guard - plus Charles is essentially the best long-yardage specialist RB in America. But with McCoy's accuracy, footwork, and ability to avoid the rush, I'd really prefer a more Gruden's Raiders-esque, intermediate-route attack, rather than leading the nation in third downs with this 35-completions-for-220-yards dink-and-dunk [censored].

Oklahoma, on the other hand, despite breaking in a lot of new faces at critical positions, looks like a well-oiled machine. This Bradford kid is a [censored] machine; somewhere Jim Thorpe is smiling. Sooner QBs (except for Hybl LOL he sucked) always seem to be ready to play at a very high level. I am less than hopeful about Oct. 6th.

Yes. (in all likelihood).

On the other hand, Oklahoma's going to destroy you.

Probably Air Force, Indiana, and Purdue are worse than Texas.

If you stay within 21 of Oklahoma you'll be lucky.

They are going to donkey punch Texas this year.

Imagine how much sicker the beating would have been if Peterson stayed

Mack Brown is now known as a great coach with the national championship, but still does things that make no sense. When Texas scored with 4 mins left to go up by 11, Texas went for two. WTF?? Kick the XP and you're up 12, i.e., it takes two TDs to beat you. Go for 2 and make it and you're up 13, i.e., it takes two TDs to beat you. Go for 2 and fail and you're up 11, i.e., now a TD + 2 + FG ties the game.

Unbelieveable.

Yah the nat'l title currently carries a lot of weight because it's recent. I think it's only a matter of time before he's Lloyd Carr II though.

Cardo,

Good news for Texas:

- They will get some of their suspended players back soon.

Bad news for Texas:

- They play OU in a couple weeks.

To be honest I don't think Mack Brown is a great coach, I think he is a great recruiter and there is a big difference between the two. He also happens to be a good guy so it is hard to not like him but when it comes down to running the game he isn't in the top tier of college football.

I think their offense will be fine actually and I think their defense could be what gets exploited when they play OU and maybe even Nebraska.

isn't recruiting part of being a coach?

over the last decade Michigan and Texas are #1 and 2 in average end-of-season poll rankings. It's possible Carr and Brown had something to do with that.

Do you have a link for that? I'm at least a little skeptical that Texas is #2 over the last decade...not saying you're wrong, but I certainly wouldn't have guessed they were that high.

no, it's from a spreadsheet i did a while back. I gave a team 25 points for a first place ranking, 24 for second, down to 1 point for 25th place. Final totals looked like this:

Michigan Total 148
Texas Total 144
Florida Total 137
Florida St. Total 137
Ohio St. Total 137
Miami (FL) Total 135
Oklahoma Total 131
Georgia Total 128
Southern California Total 118
Louisiana St. Total 113

i don't think i made any mistakes but it's certainly possible. Texas finshed ranked in 9 of the last 10 years at 15, 21, 12, 5, 6, 12, 5, 1, and 13.
