It actually spun it's web between my roof and the porch light. I saw 2 moths get caught in the web and devoured by this thing. Amazing actually.

Which is why you should leave it alone. Spiders take care of a lot of other bugs that really suck.

I watched one chasing a fly across the screen slider to my balcony once. Pretty cool. Unfortunately, the takedown took place in a crevice and I couldn't see it.

Doesn't look like a widow type web, too symmetrical. Are those markings orange? What state do you live in?

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

The legs are red and black. I live in Georgia.

Also, what do black widow webs look like? I have a ton of webs outside my house.

Black Widows make webs that look like the spider is on crack.

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

I'm guessing it's a Shamrock spider.

Widows are characterized by a distinctive red hourglass shape in the belly of the female. Stringy webs, not the beautiful orb style like that one.

You've got an orb-weaver spider - which doesn't include any of the notable poisonous spiders.

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

I don't believe that's a black widow, as others have noted. It does look like an orb weaver, which are harmless (I'm no expert, though).

I have two orb weavers by my driveway and one hairy mother that might be one at the end of my front porch (I'll try to remember to post pics at some future date).

I live in Georgia, too, and my lot has a lot of vegetation. That means lots of [censored] bugs, which, in turn, translates to spiders. There are a shitton of webs and egg sacs in my garage and near my front door. While I know spiders are beneficial to us as long as they are not poisonous, I plan on vacuum-mulching them up this weekend. I felt bad when the Chinese food delivery guy came and we had a bunch of scariness by the front door.

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

Here is one of the orb weavers next to my driveway (the other is up on a basketball hoop). We had one like it last year on an azalea.

This one is on the end of the front porch. The picture isn't as good because I didn't get as close to it, plus it moved when I got close, so its legs aren't all spread.

First one is a yellow garden spider - extremely common.

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

The 1st one is a standard garden spider. They get big but are harmless to a healthy person. I'm not sure about the 2nd one.

There's only 2 spiders in GA that you need to worry about. They are the Black Widow and Brown Recluse. Both of them can cause serious damage.

I've already posted a pic of a Black Widow.

Here's a Brown Recluse. If you want to see what kind of damage it can do, google(image) it. Some of the pics are nasty. I hope you don't have a weak stomach.

Re: Help BBV!! Is this a black widow?

you're scared of that little thing? bring it in the house and let it kill any bugs. spiders are harmless. it's very rare to be bitten by one and even more rare for it to hurt you. now, house centipedes are a different matter. i'm still adjusting to those monsters.

I live in Athens, it wasn't even that bad though, I was just woken up and felt something biting my foot. They really just look nasty, the bite itself wasn't that painful.
