i love reading stuff about stupid announcers and/or writers. i probably miss a lot of stuff though, as do others. i figure if we post them here we can better circulate the stupidity and maybe even start some serious movements to get these buffoons top be held accountable for the idiocy they spew.

chargers beat the pats: korn said 25, wilbon said 10
tiger wins upcoming event: both said 100

i dont remember the others but it was obv these clowns would be broke if they ever bet on sports.

In other news: I think some of the things posted already really aren't THAT stupid.
Not that some guys aren't pretty dumb nor is it that hard a freaking job just to talk about sports and have SOME kind of a clue...but when guys are on the air that much there's bound to be some slip-ups or just some plain-old dumb things said.
I would be scared to death for you guys to listen to me when I was a broadcast or if I ever get back into broadcasting again. I said some pretty dumb stuff daily I think....and still do around here I guess.

Regarding Joe's "grander scheme of things"...it might be one of the few times I partly agree with him.
TEX scores 30 on BAL. Then if they lose 4-2, 5-3, 7-2 and 5-1 they stilll have a + run-diff. I'm not quite as impressed by the overall run-diff or win-projection type stats as maybe I should be.

It's about winning it on the field and some runs really are more valuable than others.

Right, and the win differential of aces over 7-2 isn't really that important because sometimes the flop comes 7-7-2. Come on now. Teams that have a larger positive run differential are likely going to be teams that win a lot of games over time.

Unless you think there is some unique talent or skill set that allows certain types of teams to regularly win by ten and lose by one. Its not impossible, and "bullpens" is probably a good candidate, but I think this effect gets washed out for the most part. Probably has SOME impact, reducing the usefulness of run differential, but RD is still a good predictor.

When was the last time OPS hit a grounder to the right side with a runner on 2nd and nobody out? How many times has OPS gone out there without his best stuff and turned in a gutty 7 IP to carry his team to victory? OPS doesn't hustle to 1st on every grounder, hit the cut-off man, get his uniform dirty, or any of the other things that real baseball players do. Did OPS steal 2nd in game 4 of ALCS? The whole "Pythagorean W-L" thing holds very little water for me. Run differential is a "decent indicator" of how "good" a team is. But how "good" a team is isn't directly related to how many games they will win.

Some control pitcher going out and "not having it" on a given day, say a Jamie Moyer type, getting pummelled for 9 runs in 2-2/3 innings would be something I'd just shrug off as a fan. It's just a loss. But I do agree that over the course of a season, it should flatten out a bit.

Unless your team has 4 aces and 1 chimpanzee with an ERA of 15.56. Obviously your Pythagorean W-L will vary greatly from your actual W-L.

is run-diff really that much of a factor in determining who is going to win the world series?
I think Boston has the best record in baseball. And perhaps their pitching works well for post-season series which are kind of a different arrangement than the reg-season.
Stuff like that is worth looking into.
Saying that Boston has a great chance to win the world series because their run-differential is so great just seems weird to me.

I think the only problem is context. He was asked for a prediction. Stuff like OPS and run differential are very important in predicting things so saying they don't matter in the grand scheme of things is really dumb.

If it wasn't about predicting, I think the statement wouldn't be bad at all depending on what he means by "the grand scheme of things." Most baseball fans probably haven't heard of OPS much less know how it's calculated. Hell, most fans don't even know what slugging percentage is other than some indicator of power, which they basically only get from the name. So if the grand scheme of things has something to do with general popularity then it would be a fine statement.

Also, winning titles is for most players the ultimate thing. I'm sure Barry Bonds would give up .200 points in career OPS for the Giants to have just held on to a [censored] 5 [censored] run [censored] lead for [censored] 3 [censored] innings.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this. My point is that stats are great for answering questions (such as the one he was asked) but otherwise don't really matter.
