Fave song lyrics
I will cut to the chase and then you can read the rest if you like.
Topic: Favourite( the Queen's English- lol) song lyrics Criteria: one line, one verse, one chorus, or the whole thing if neccessary Extra's: Having more than one ("equal favourite's is fine"). Any reasons as to why you like the lyrics, their importance to you etc..... Mine would be from Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here: "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl year after year." Don't know why I like these so much. I don't like to think it sums up my life....hmmmm.... Anyhow, I have to say that I really enjoy this forum. Alot of fun and interesting posts. I am a guitar player, albeit more of a hide in my basement and play like crazy guitar player for about 20 years. lol. I do get out occasionally to play mind you and I do write my own stuff so original material would be neat to see. |
Re: Fave song lyrics
Hard for me to do this, i guess i would put (among many others)
"And so castles made of sand melts into the sea, eventually" Just reminds how fleeting life is. And how anything we think is real and concrete (and even amazing) eventually disappears (i guess "dust in the wind" emphasizes the same point). |
Re: Fave song lyrics
I love how this song changes the chorus slightly each time it's sung...first is the hopeful "I wish you believed in life," then the frustrated "I thought you believed in life," then, finally, the accepting "I wish you belief in life," almost like it's a blessing after all is lost and the relationship is over.
Plus, the obscenity at the very end gives the song its final "oomph," the knowledge that even though the singer is trying to let go and be above it all, she's still incredibly hurt and frustrated that it didn't work out. Amazing song. (Believed You Were) Lucky by Aimee Mann So i guess i'll give it up Yeah i guess i will What's the use in pushing When it's all uphill I can't be appointed Keeper of the flame Without two to carry It won't burn the same - oh It seems obvious to me But then again Could be You just never felt that way Chorus I wish you believed in life Believed in fate Believed you were lucky And worth the wait 'cause life could be lovely Life could be so great It gets so embarassing So i acquiesce And i'll change my mind again You change your address - oh It seems logical to me But then again Could be i was simply not that smart Chorus: I thought you believed in life Believed in fate Believed you were lucky And worth the wait 'cause life could be lovely Life could be so great Bridge: There must be some other door that they are saving Behind which my happiness lies I won't be wasting my words To tell you hopes that i had - We can just leave it alone for now Chorus: I wish you: belief in life Belief in fate Belief you are lucky And worth the wait 'cause life could be lovely Life could be [censored] great. |

"Everyday should be a good day to die" - You never know
Fav is from Dave Matthews Band, ever since I heard this one line, I've been trying to live my life with as much happiness as I, myself, can make. "Don't let the troubles in your head Steal too much time you'll soon be dead So play" The lyrics to Don't Fear the Reaper is up there too. Definatley don't need to post 'em, I'm sure ya'll have heard that song. |
Re: Fave song lyrics
there's about a thousand Townes Van Zandt lines I could paste - his lyrics were like poetry -
"for a gambler likes his women fancy fancy she would be and the fire of her longing would keep way the cold and her dress was a sight to see" - St. John the Gambler "Well, I sometimes went hungry with my pockets all bare Lord, I sometimes had good luck with money to spare" - My Proud Mountains "Being born is going blind and buying down a thousand times to echoes strung on pure temptation Sorrow and solitude these are the precious things and the only words that are worth rememberin'" - Nothin' "My days, they are the highway kind they only come to leave" - Highway Kind "Spring only sighed summer had to be satisfied fall is a feelin' that I just can't lose." - Flyin' Shoes "If I had a nickel I'd find a game If I won a dollar I'd make it rain If it rained an ocean I'd drink it dry And lay me down dissatisfied" - Rex's Blues |

Bob Dylan
It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) The reason i like the lyrics is that it sums up the human experience more then any song i have ever heard. I would post the lyrics but it would take up a whole page, and i wouldn't want to cut any so here it is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bjqY...F&index=43 |
Re: Fave song lyrics
"I Want You" Elvis Costello
While it's a depressing song, it does a great job of articulating the frustration/anger/impotence of having ended a relationship unwillingly, and the mean twists of imagination that result. The repetition of "I want you," the minimal guitar composition and the way Elvis' voice occasionally cracks really help bring it home. I couldn't find a decent version of Elvis singing it after a quick search, but Fiona Apple did a very good cover of this song with Elvis playing guitar here I want you Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell I dont think I can live without you And I know that I never will Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death I cant say anymore than I love you Everything else is a waste of breath I want you Youve had your fun you dont get well no more I want you Your fingernails go dragging down the wall Be careful darling you might fall I want you I woke up and one of us was crying I want you You said young man I do believe youre dying I want you If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways I want you Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget I want you Since when were you so generous and inarticulate I want you Its the stupid details that my heart is breaking for Its the way your shoulders shake and what theyre shaking for Its knowing that he knows you now after only guessing I want you Its the thought of him undressing you or you undressing I want you He tossed some tatty compliment your way I want you And you were fool enough to love it when he said I want you I want you The truth cant hurt you its just like the dark It scares you witless But in time you see things clear and stark I want you Go on and hurt me then well let it drop I want you Im afraid I wont know where to stop I want you Im not ashamed to say I cried for you I want you I want to know the things you did that we do too I want you I want to hear he pleases you more than I do I want you I might as well be useless for all it means to you I want you Did you call his name out as he held you down I want you Oh no my darling not with that clown I want you Youve had your fun you dont get well no more I want you No-one who wants you could want you more I want you Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up I want you I want you Im going to say it once again til I instill it I know Im going to feel this way until you kill it I want you I want you |

The Smiths - Hand in Glove.
Hand in glove The sun shines out of our behinds No, it's not like any other love This one is different - because it's us Hand in glove We can go wherever we please And everything depends upon How near you stand to me And if the people stare Then the people stare Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care Kiss My Shades Hand in glove The Good People laugh Yes, we may be hidden by rags But we've something they'll never have Hand in glove The sun shines out of our behinds Yes, we may be hidden by rags But we've something they'll never have And if the people stare Then the people stare Oh, I really don't know and I really don't care Kiss My Shades ... oh ... So, hand in glove I stake my claim I'll fight to the last breath If they dare touch a hair on your head I'll fight to the last breath For the Good Life is out there somewhere So stay on my arm, you little charmer But I know my luck too well Yes, I know my luck too well And I'll probably never see you again I'll probably never see you again I'll probably never see you again Oh ... |

Re: Fave song lyrics
When threads like this come up, I feel compelled to say that Dylan has literally 100s of songs that I would consider to be lyrically genius. So I will submit my choices for non-Dylan tunes.
Pink Floyd, Free Four "The memories of a man in his old age, are the deeds of a man in his prime.... Life is a short, warm moment And death is a long cold rest." And my favourite Grateful Dead lyric, from Scarlet Begonias: "Once in a while you get shown the light, In the strangest of places if you look at it right" |
Re: Fave song lyrics
I like the alliteration in this lyric:
Gazing from my window to the streets below On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow In the humor category, I get a kick out of "Bob Rules" by Keller Williams And then of course there's the bungle/patton lyrical odyssey. Probably not suitable for the lounge. |
Re: Fave song lyrics
now the verses i've sang don't add much weight
to the story in my head so i'm thinking i should go and write a punchline... but they're so hard to find in my cosmic mind so i think i'll take a look out of the window... --- Jon Anderson, YES, "Going for the One" 1975 just thought it was hilarious. |

Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life
End over end neither left nor to right Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life. Make me, oh make me, Lord more than I am Make me a piece in your master game plan Free from the earthly tempestion below I’ve got the will, Lord if you’ve got the toe. Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life End over end neither left nor to right Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life. Take all the brothers who’ve gone on before And all of the sisters who’ve knocked on your door All the departed dear loved ones of mine Stick’em up front in the offensive line. Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life End over end neither left nor to right Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life. Yeah, Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life End over end neither left nor to right Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights Drop kick me Jesus through the goal posts of life. |
Re: Fave song lyrics
When we grew up and went to school,
There were certain teachers who would hurt the children anyway they could, By pouring their derision upon anything we did, And exposing every weakness, however carefully hidden by the kids. But in the town it was well-known when they got home at night, Their fat, psychopathic wives would thrash them within inches of their lives. |
Re: Fave song lyrics
Dead Can Dance
The Carnival is Over Outside The storm clouds gathering, Moved silently along the dusty boulevard. Where flowers turning crane their fragile necks So they can in turn Reach up and kiss the sky. They are driven by a strange desire Unseen by the human eye Someone is calling. I remember when you held my hand In the park we would play when the circus came to town. Look! over here. Outside The circus gathering Moved silently along the rainswept boulevard. The procession moved on the shouting is over The fabulous freaks are leaving town. They are driven by a strange desire Unseen by the human eye. The carinval is over. We sat and watched As the moon rose again For the very first time. |

Re: Fave song lyrics
The Dude is right, Dylan always wins this (I'm partial to Shelter from the Storm myself), so it should be a Dylan-free discussion. Maybe he can have his own lyrics thread?
Here's a few that might not be on people's radar, plus a few that probably are but deserve mention anyway. Some are truly poetry (I wonder if The Lounge is cool enough to have a poetry thread without getting all self conscious about it?), some are just fun. No links to the full lyrics, because all the lyrics sites are rife with popups. Working Class Hero, John Lennon (though I like Marianne Faithful's version better): As soon as you're born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all Shivers, Nick Cave (also check out Mercy Seat, and Red Right Hand): I've been contemplating suicide, But it really doesn't suit my style. So I think I'll just act bored instead, And contain the blood I would've shed No Aphrodisiac, The Whitlams (this song has fantastic lyrics throughout, but this post would be way too long if I included more than just a sample of any of them): There's no aphrodisiac like loneliness You shouldn't leave me alone Flame Trees, Cold Chisel: Number one is to find some friends to say "You're doing well After all this time you boys look just the same" Number two is the happy hour at one of two hotels Settle in to play "Do you remember so and so?" Number three is never say her name Man's Too Strong, Dire Straits (another one with fantastic lyrics throughout): You may have got your silver But I swear upon my life Your sister gave me diamonds And I gave them to your wife Love Is The Drug, Roxy Music: Late that night I park my car Stake my place in the singles bar Face to face, toe to toe Heart to heart as we hit the floor Lumber up, limbo down The locked embrace, the stumble round I say go, she say yes Dim the lights, you can guess the rest Cool For Cats, UK Squeeze: Shake up at the disco And I think Ive got a pull I ask her lots of questions And she hangs on to the wall I kiss her for the first time And then I take her home I'm invited in for coffee And I give the dog a bone Needle And The Damage Done, Neil Young (yet another one): I've seen the needle and the damage done A little part of it in everyone But every junkie's like a settin' sun Bad Touch, Bloodhound Gang: So show me yours I'll show you mine "Tool Time" you'll Lovett just like Lyle And then we'll do it doggy style so we can both watch "X-Files" Nick of Time, Bonnie Raitt (this is the lyrical equivalent of a chick flick, skip to the next if you can't stand it): A friend of mine she cries at night, and she Calls me on the phone Sees babies everywhere she goes and she Wants one of her own. Shes waited long enough she says And still he cant decide Pretty soon shell have to choose and it tears her up inside... (OK, the official lyrics say "she can't decide" instead of "he can't decide," but I swear she sings he, and it's a much more powerful lyric that way) Brilliant Disguise, Bruce Springsteen (or The River, or Thunder Road, or about a dozen others): I want to know if it's you I don't trust 'cause I damn sure don't trust myself Heroes, David Bowie (Bowie would be second after Dylan for me. Pick a song, its lyrics are fantastic): And you You can be mean And I I'll drink all the time 'Cause we're lovers And that is a fact Yes we're lovers And that is that The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Gil Scott-Heron: You will not be able to stay home, brother. You will not be able to plug in, turn on and cop out. You will not be able to lose yourself on skag, And skip out for beer during commercials, Because the revolution will not be televised. That's Entertainment, The Jam: A smash of glass and a rumble of boots - An electric train and a ripped up 'phone booth - Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tomcat - Lights going out and a kick in the balls - That's Entertainment. Til The Real Thing Comes Along, Judy Henske (this is a transcription, because the lyrics sites don't have it): I would work for you, oh I'd would slave for you I'd work my body to the grave for you Now if that isn't love, it'll have to do Til the real thing comes along Perfect Skin, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions: She's got cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin, And she's sexually enlightened by cosmopolitan 88 Lines About 44 Women, The Nails: Joan thought men were second best to masturbating in a bath ... and 86 more lines about 43 more women. Closer, Nine Inch Nails: You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that It brings Welcome to the Boomtown, David and David: Ms. Cristina drives a nine four four Satisfaction oozes from her pores Second Castles in the Sand (no love for Little Wing?), and thanks for the Townes van Zandt, hadn't heard that before, it's good stuff. |

Edit to add this Zevon classic. Best part about it is the bubblegum pop sound the song has: Well, he went down to dinner in his Sunday best Excitable boy, they all said And he rubbed the pot roast all over his chest Excitable boy, they all said He took in the four a.m. show at the Clark Excitable boy, they all said And he bit the usherette's leg in the dark Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy He took little Suzie to the Junior Prom Excitable boy, they all said And he raped her and killed her, then he took her home Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy After ten long years they let him out of the home Excitable boy, they all said And he dug up her grave and built a cage with her bones Excitable boy, they all said Well, he's just an excitable boy |

Also Jim Henson's favorite, and God do I feel so old compared to the rest of you with your Aimee Manns and the like. Harold and Yip also wrote a few songs besides this one:
Lydia oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia, Lydia, the Tattooed Lady. She has eyes that folks adore so, And a torso even more so. Lydia oh Lydia, that encyclopidia, Oh Lydia the Queen of Tattoo. On her back is the Battle of Waterloo. Beside it the wreck of the Hesperus, too. And proudly above waves the Red, White, and Blue, You can learn a lot from Lydia. La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la When her robe is unfurled, she will show you the world, If you step up and tell her where. For a dime you can see Kankakee or Paris, Or Washington crossing the Delaware. La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la Oh Lydia oh Lydia, say have you met Lydia, Oh Lydia the Tattooed Lady When her muscles start relaxin’, Up the hill comes Andrew Jackson Lydia oh Lydia, that encyclopidia, oh Lydia the queen of them all! For two bits she will do a mazurka in jazz, With a view of Niagara that nobody has. And on a clear day you can see Alcatraz. You can learn a lot from Lydia. La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la Come along and see Buff’lo Bill with his lasso. Just a little classic by Mendel Picasso. Here is Captain Spaulding exploring the Amazon. Here’s Godiva but with her pajamas on. La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la Here is Grover Whalen unveilin’ the Trilon. Over on the West Coast we have Treaure Island. Here’s Najinsky a-doin’ the rhumba. Here’s her social security numba. {whistles}La la la, la la la, la la la, la la la Oh Lydia, oh Lydia that encyclopidia, Oh Lydia the champ of them all. She once swept an Admiral clear off his feet. The ships on her hips made his heart skip a beat. And now the old boy’s in command of the fleet, For he went and married Lydia. I said Lydia {He said Lydia} They said Lydia {We said Lydia} La La! |

Re: Fave song lyrics
Jethro Tull, Wind Up
When I was young and they packed me off to school and taught me how not to play the game, I didn't mind if they groomed me for success, or if they said that I was just a fool. So I left there in the morning with their God tucked underneath my arm -- their half-assed smiles and the book of rules. So I asked this God a question and by way of firm reply, He said -- I'm not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays. So to my old headmaster (and to anyone who cares): before I'm through I'd like to say my prayers -- I don't believe you: you had the whole damn thing all wrong -- He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays. Well you can excomunicate me on my way to Sunday school and have all the bishops harmonize these lines -- how do you dare tell me that I'm my Father's son when that was just an accident of Birth. I'd rather look around me -- compose a better song `cos that's the honest measure of my worth. In your pomp and all your glory you're a poorer man than me, as you lick the boots of death born out of fear. I don't believe you: you had the whole damn thing all wrong -- He's not the kind you have to wind up on Sundays. |

PJ - I Am Mine
The north is to south what the clock is to time. Theres east and theres west and there everywhere life. I know that I was born and I know that Ill die. The in between is mine. I am mine. They all sat around in a circle They were all laughing and all telling lies Then the tall one he bumped in a dollar He said boys I've got nothing to hide Now if the King and the Queen stood together Then the ace he would not be to blame And if the cards were all laid on the table Then love could be more than a game And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were the man you wanted I would not be the man that I am And I have seen my share of long nights And I have told my share of lies And I have run into the darkness When I saw the look in your eyes But if the night didn't lie in the darkness Then the daylight would be hard to find And if the truth didn't turn to a weakness I would have never have spoken my mind And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were the man you wanted Then I would not be the man that I am So if you're going out to Carolina Then don't linger in New Mexico And if you think of the one there behind you Then you might not feel so alone And if the stars didn't shine on the water Then the sun wouldn't burn on the sand And if I were the man you wanted I would not be the man that I am [/ QUOTE ] - Lyle Lovett |

Good to see Gil Scott Heron mentioned. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised is clearly his best, but I'll add another.
Whitey On The Moon - Gil Scott Heron A rat done bit my sister Nell. (with Whitey on the moon) Her face and arms began to swell. (and Whitey's on the moon) I can't pay no doctor bill. Re: Fave song lyrics
Some awesome lyrics mentioned here. A very wide variety as well - from Pink Floyd to Gil Scott Heron. There are some eclectic people here. I have way too many favorite songs to list, but here some lyrics to songs I'm listening to now:
The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon ...you climbed on the ladder With the wind in your sails You came like a comet Blazing your trail Too high Too far Too soon You saw the whole of the moon. Tool - 46&2 ...I've been crawling on my belly Clearing out what could've been. I've been wallowing in my own chaotic And insecure delusions. I wanna feel the change consume me, Feel the outside turning in. I wanna feel the metamorphosis and Cleansing I've endured within The Jam - A Town Called Malice Better stop dreaming of the quiet life - 'cause its the one we'll never know And quit running for that runaway bus - 'cause those rosy days are few And - stop apologizing for the things you've never done, 'cause time is short and life is cruel - But it's up to us to change This town called malice. Jane's Addiction - Ocean Size ...I want to be more like the ocean, no talking and all action. |
