I was so pissed my team (Grizzlies) didn't get him. I'm still not happy because he seems like an awesome person.

I don't wish the Jail Blazers and luck but I sure do wish Oden has some luck.

No, taking pleasure in the team's failure would be laughing when they lose 50 games this year.

What he's doing here is classless.

Re: Oden done for year

I think Oden is going to sleep ok on his bed of money. I doubt it's as big of a beat for him then it is for the Blazers. He'll play lots of xbox, learn the offense on paper, and be ready for 2008. Now if the knee becomes chronic, that's a real shame.

This is serious, serious trouble.

I recall Ki-Jana Carter being drafted #1 overall by the Bengals in the NFL draft in the early 90s. During his first season, he faced a serious ACL injury and was never the same again. Because of that, he (unfairly) goes down in history as one of the biggest draft busts of all time.

Based on prior injuries and especially this, the future does not look well for Oden. Anybody remember Sam Bowie?

Re: Oden done for year

As a new Blazer season ticket holder, this sucks. It sucks hard.

But with his age and the fact that his microfracture surgery wasn't nearly as severe as others who have come back, I have confidence that he'll be ready for the 08-09 season. In the meantime, our core of Aldridge and Roy will continue to mature and we'll also likely have a better draft pick again this year to build on.

It's not a death sentence but it doesn't mean it's good either. It sucks for the entire league, too, as Oden is one of the good young guys in the league and not your prototypical thug that the league has generated over the years.

Its not like he has a life-threatening injury or cancer or something. The guy is still going to be making plenty of money to limp around for a year, I don't think its really that big of a deal to treat him like a piece of an organization rather than as a person with feelings.

How would that be unfair? I don't think it's anything against his work ethic etc. It's just simply saying he was drafted very high and the team didn't get anything out of him.

Re: Oden done for year

Whoever wants to argue against the NBA sucking is a moron. The NBA is w/o question barely better than the NHL.

Hold on, 50% of the league makes the playoffs? Teams tank the last 2 months of the season, for A CHANCE to get the #1 pick. Most of the teams play atrocious basketball.

Actually this is a good point and shows a surprising degree of long term thinking that most of sports talk now lacks.

It's not like Portland was going to be great this year anyway. Tank for another year and get another good pick and then start from there.

(After I post this I'm sure someone is going to post saying that Portland already traded away next years pick.)

Are you serious? He isn't going to die. He has to miss out on a year of basketball and is getting paid millions to do so. I think he'll manage. I've only got so much sympathy to spread around and I think I'll save it for others.

As a Portland fan, this hurts so much. But one thing that makes it ok is that we now have a team we can root for, regardless of wins and losses. I'll be watching this year for sure, regardless of how well they do.

They were just hibernating during the Jailblazers era. They've got some of the best fans in the league.

Also, big wow wow wow about this news. I'm not even a Blazers fan and this has taken the wind out of my sails. I am very high on this kid.

The good news is that even though it's microfracture surgery, it sounds like it's not a very big one. Plus, he's still just 18-19 and the Blazers aren't in a position to want to rush this kid back for short term gains. I really hope he makes an Amare-like recovery from this.

At the risk of derailing the topic, I'll answer this question.

We'll never know how good Ki-Jana Carter could have been. For all we know, he could have been a solid, consistent running back along the lines of Curtis Martin. But we never knew because he was never the same player after he tore his ACL. It wasn't his fault that he didn't reach his full potential. He wasn't a bad player. He just got really unlucky.

Ryan Leaf, on the other hand, was a hack. He had a strong throwing arm but had a ten-cent head. Lawrence Phillips had talent, but no discipline. Those are busts.

Back on topic, Oden's situation seems remarkably similar to the early stages of Sam Bowie's career. Oden was supposed to be the next incredible center: one that may even have the potential to surpass the likes of Tim Duncan, Patrick Ewing and Hakeem Olajuwon. But if this trend continues, he could be in for a short, injury-plagued career.

Knee surgery. Why is Oden out for a year?

In 1983 Joan Benoit had knee surgery. 17 days later,
Joan ran the marathon in 2:31 to win the US Olympic
trials.

Miamipuck 09-13-2007 05:06 PM

Re: Oden done for year

They said he had cartilage problems. How is he out for the year? Unless of course the media screwed that report up which would not be too unusual.

Did they replace all the cartilage or was there ACL/MCL damage too?

Re: Oden done for year

This does sound like a blessing in disguise if you can pull back to back number one picks and make sure this kid is healthy for next year.

I am sure oden feels like [censored] though.

kidcolin 09-13-2007 05:13 PM

Re: Oden done for year

he's having microfracture knee surgery. It's a known career wrecker. Even if he's "ready" in 6-8 months, there's absolutely no reason to rush it.
