Things you\'ve wasted lots of money on when you were younger

I'm not talking about cars, TVs, furniture. That's what you should be spending money on. This thread is going to have things relevant for people of different generations (at least I think).

For me, for example, when I look through some old things I have it would be CDs. Totaling to about 1200$ worth, I have no idea how I had that much money when i was 13-17. I was always broke as a joke.

Also magic cards, but i don't have a total for you, just a large box.

Just got me wondering with compounding interest, if i had decided against buying those and say shoving that $ in an interest bearing account how much i'd have today.

So I'm assuming that older people (i'm 24) may have different money wasting objects that they've acquired in small amounts over a long period of time that are just a ridiculous waste (nowadays u can get music for free)

I'm going to take a stab and say TY beanie babies, and DVDs are the new-ish things that people have wasted $ on.

So state your age and time period you've purchased the things that essentially to you is worthless as of today (whether u've lost interest in it or you can get it cheaply) in list format:

age 24, acquired 13-17:

1200$ worth of CDs
>500$ worth of MTG cards

When I was 12-13, all my pocket money went on these:

Eventually after trading with other kids, I had a box two-foot long.

I actually wish I still had them today, but I traded them with some kid for whatever the next thing was. He ripped me off and I still feel bitter about it.

Nixing cars from the discussion is kinda dumb, since that's the primary thing that people completely blow their money on. They depreciate, and most people buy cars that they shouldn't. By shouldn't, I mean that they end up paying 50-100% of the car's value in interest because they had $2k and bought a $30k car.

CD's is a good one. Haven't bought one for years, but I bought a ton in high school. What makes it an even bigger waste of money is that they were all stolen

I have drawers full of baseball/basketball cards. Can anyone tell me if these were a waste judging by current prices?

I got a $2 allowance and had a pretty hardcore Matchbox and Hot Wheels habit

football cards

bought an $800 CD player for my car when they first came out, which promptly got stolen, then bought a $500 replacement - probably one year's part-time wages tied up in those two

there's good arguments (well to certain people) why they AREN'T a waste of money. my housemate in college was an english major who bought CDs for the booklet art/booklets. I still don't see how it's justified though.

To show I'm hypocritical, the only CDs i buy anymore is KMFDM, but i think they're starting to suck now, so i may stop.

I don't feel like I ever wasted money other than losing at poker when internet poker first hit.

what i view as well spent money went towards

muscle men

and later, to creepy crawlers which actually ended up making money because I parlayed it into a profitable playground business. my friend and i were local legends when it came to creepy crawlers, artists in a league of our own. People would pay upwards of $3 for a custom-colored scorpion.

I can't call that a waste, since I now know a hell of a lot more about electronics because of it. Then again, I only had 2 of them. A Kyosho Raider and then an Associated RC/10 graphite.

Apparently neither one of these cars exist anymore.

It was CDs for me too. Back around ages 11-14 it was like a competition amongst my group of friends. Most CDs are now lost or scratched to hell, especially my favorites, but I did generally get good use out of them then. That's just what ALL my money went towards.

I'm 26 and when I was 13-17 I blew a ton of money on RPGs and CCGs. 18-23 it was CDs and music gear.

For the first two years I played poker I spent everything I made except $50k for my bankroll at the end of it all. Thinking about this makes me really sad as I have none of these possessions anymore. Seriously, save your damn money.

Re: Things you\'ve wasted lots of money on when you were younger

I have a bunch of baseball cards, probably like $1500 wasted as a kid at the very least.

Pokemon cards made me mad kid money($600?). I played the game for like a day. Then I traded up to better ones then sold them on ebay. Eventually I went hopping from Wizards store to store with my mom and a friend buying like 30 packs a store(there was a 10 pack maximum/per person lol). I went home with ~300 packs of pokemon cards on my table and opened and sorted them. I had like 8 charizards at one point and sold them when they were going to crazed parents at christmas time for $80+.

Baseball cards, basketball cards, MTG cards, Overpower (Marvel) cards. I even bought cards of some baseball strat game with dice.

Also, sneakers. Every 3 months my mom bought me $150+ Nikes when I would've been happy with $20 LA Lights.

In HS, we used to have 4-5 player leagues, drafting pretty much all-star teams out of either one or both leagues. The cards were for the 1977 season, so the Carew and Rice cards were usually among the first three picks.

We later bought the cards for the 1983 season, and determined that Greg Minton was ineligible as a batter (check out the stats!)

Re: Things you\'ve wasted lots of money on when you were younger

Probably close to $10k worth of DVDs that while I've gotten decent use out of, in no way was the purchase justified for like 90% of them.

If only Netflix was around then.
