High Stakes Poker thread (9/10)

Here starts a thread for all discussion regarding the 9/10 episode of High Stakes Poker, airing at 9pm ET tonight on GSN. As usual, please try to note any spoilers for those on the West Coast, who are Tivoing the show, or watching the show later on the various other ways it can be watched (but not linked to).

I hope Hellmuth gets stacked, and cries a lot!

I know I will be in the minority here but I can't wait to see Jamie Gold play. I take much pleasure in watching him slowly get robbed of a fortune he never deserved.

Season 3. You're not the only one trying not to remember it.

What was Todd complaining about in the very beginning of tonight's episode?

He said something like, "Why are you asking? What's the rule here? There should be a rule here?"

I'm fine with one or two 72 hands per episode, but I'm hoping they stop it there. Hopefully there won't be another one this episode.

Back from the commercial break, and there's another 72.

Bluffing is entertaining, but so are real hands occasionally.

Classic from Safai. Asking Hellmuth if he jacked off while looking at a picture of himself, then had to take a shower when it got all over him. Wow. Priceless

Wow..last two hands between Hellmuth/Safai and Baxter/Mouth deliver. Despite the absence of Negreanu/Farha/Esfandiari, this has been a fun episode. If only Silent Mike would talk more. He has been in the middle of a lot of entertaining hands.

I was wondering the same thing. I think it would suffice if people would just refrain from starting other threads that may contain spoilers, especially in the thread title. Basically, a person who doesn't want to see spoilers for this episode should be able to read any thread other than the official one (that's this one).

Ooh, next week looks good:

Hellmuth, Harman, Gold, Safai, Negreanu, Farha ... two others too. Can't remember.

The guy who felted Phil with a 6-high flush needs to have a shrine built to him.

"I lifted weights, ran three miles, took a shower and now I'm ready to play perfect poker."

And gets felted by an amateur on the very next hand. LOVE IT!

Does anybody know anything about Safai? He looks familiar, but I don't recognize the name.

Micro Donk 09-10-2007 10:15 PM

Re: High Stakes Poker thread (9/10)

Bob Safai (born in 1962) is the owner a successful real estate company in Los Angeles, CA. Safai considers poker to be a hobby and sees himself strictly as a recreational player. He has played high-stakes cash games for over 10 years, playing no-limit hold'em up as high as $500/$1000. When asked to describe his poker playing style, Safai says, "I'm the loosest guy at the table."

I personally found this comment distasteful and out of line even if Safai really did just repeat what the others had said when Phil was away. But I'm not a Phil hater.

Baxter misplayed the J/10 because he didn't want to be bluffed by Hellmuth...Phil knew exactly where he was on every street, he should of kept his mouth shut and fired 35k on the river and he would have won the pot and $500 from everybody at the table...sick read, sh*tty table-talk (ie "I'm hard to read because I talk when I have big hands")

How long until Safai gets his own thread where the Helmuth sycophants talk about what an annoying fish he is?

The real suspense at this point is not whether Safai felts Hellmuth, or silent Mike felts Mike the Mouth. The real suspense is will Todd play a hand all season?

I did not TIVO this but I could have sworn the exact quote was something like "I'm hard to read because I talk when I have big hands too ". Can someone confirm the exact quote?

Like I said, I could be wrong, but I did a double-take at the quote I THINK I heard (above) because I thought that was the biggest tell he's ever let out (unless, of course, he's going third level). It just seemed very genuine and in my mind first instinct would have had him on a bluff at that comment.

I actually love Hellmuth and I think Safai's comment was priceless.. this guy looks like he might be great as a HSP regular.

Also, next week I think the game is really going to take off. We have heard that season 4 gets ridiculous in the action department and it looks like next episode that will begin. First 3 episodes were a nice start.

Peace

Re: High Stakes Poker thread (9/10)

This was my all time favorite HSP episode. Action out the wahzoo with multiple players PF, felting, quick calls on all streets, a great line by Bob Safai (will go down as one of the best one liners on any poker show), good bluff reads (MM vs Harabalos), Hellmuth on tilt, and the game played exactly like the typical game at the bike.

The 2 new guys are excellent additions to the show and they play fast and are willing to raise and get involved in big pots. Plus they both have years' experience live so they aren't cowed by Hellmuth and his comments.

Seems to me that once the show is over it should be fine to post whatever we want in the official threads. If I am tivo'ing and haven't watched yet then I'll make it a point to stay out of this thread. I hope others would do the same.

BTW, happy Birthday Kevin.

What a gloriously good episode.

I have to say, HSP Season 4 and the 72 prop has made cash games FAR more lucrative of late. People see it and they want to try it. I'm all for it! Talk about opening up the action.

What? You're raising 25x the BB pre-flop? Why... I may just call!

Yeah, then later Todd was bitching because somebody hit a pair with his 72 and bet and Todd complained that if you hit a pair (and thus betting what was the best hand) you shouldn't have to pay.

What was the deal with Todd telling the table "People like Shaun Sheikahn (sp) enter the poker world after being pampered and find it tough." I am paraphrasing. Found it kind of interesting and I don't know much background on Sheki other than his "rivalry" with mouth.

Re: High Stakes Poker thread (9/10)

I don't like the 72 stuff that much. My problem with it is that even if they only show a few hands of it per episode, it still effects every hand that is played, really messing [censored] up. I don't HATE it, the first episode I thought it was awesome...

I'm extremly excited about next weeks, looks to be a much better group.
