Is tipping from your pocket illegal?

Just heard from a buddy of mine that played 5/10NL last night where two odd rulings happened. First there was an all in showdown where the player that moved in first wanted the player who he had covered who called to also include his white stack, where whites weren't in play. Floor ruled that he had to also put in the $18 in white chips in front of him.

Later the same player after losing that hand, went to the cage while on a cigarette break and bought whites and was pulling them out of his pocket to tip the dealer when the same player from before called the floor to bitch that he was bringing outside money to the game and the floor sided with him again, even with 5-6 other players agreeing that if anything it was leaving more money at the game. At this point the now double infractor and most of the table stopped tipping altogether. Were either of these rulings correct?

No.

If whites don't play, they DON'T PLAY. Simple.

I don't know how anyone could say tipping is "bringing outside money to the game" since the money is NEVER IN PLAY. Unless this is some weird game where the dealer plays and tips go into his stack.

Where did this happen, and has the floor been tested for retardation yet?

So let me get this straight, one can tip the dealer with pocket change/chips?

of course. why wouldn't this be allowed? hell you can give the dealer a piece of gum from your pocket as a tip if you want.

Around here, the whites play in $5 increments in red chip games. If you're all in and have $18 in white, 15 of them go in.

ON,

I've seen different rulings. Sometimes $15 of the $18 in white will play, sometimes $0 of the $18 in white will play.

The tipping from pocket ruling is obviously ridiculous.

House rule like other thread, sometimes increments of 5 will play sometimes not

heres how to solve this, get a stack os singles and use them for tip money since dollars them selves won't ever play in the game

WOW, both sound pretty stupid to me.

At the Hilton and Trop the poker room has waitress service from a waitress. I have never seen a nit complain when a player payd for his or her lunch with money from the table.

Re: Is tipping from your pocket illegal?

At Blue Chip in Indiana, you can't tip dealers with cash. I tried to tip with a dollar coin, and the dealer said I couldn't because of their tip-sharing policy. The floor said the same thing when I tried to tip him for a dinner comp. The waitresses, however, happily took my dollar coins.

If anything, it would make sense to NOT allow tipping from your stack. But since this would make life very difficult and hurt dealers tips it doesn't make sense.

technically speaking isnt this really the only proper way to tip? i thought by most rules one was not allowed to tip from one's stack since it takes money off of the table but the rule is never enforced (nor should it be).

I've never heard or seen a complaint about tipping dealers from a stack. But ten years ago I worked the floor at Hollywood Park and occasionally someone would complain about the fact HP allowed people to play the horses with chips from their stack. Generally I'd handle it by asking to talk to the player away from the table at his convenience.

If we got away I'd say, "Sir, most people believe that allowing people to bet the horses helps the action here. Betting from their stack is a convenience for them even though it takes a little money off the table. Look at that table (pointing to a table full of horse bettors) versus that table (where nobody was betting horses). Which game has more action?

That never failed to quell the complaints except for an uber-nit or two. And keeping uber-nits happy should never be a cardroom priority.

I dealt with a complaint once and told them to give the tip back. A regular player's wife was the cocktail waitress. He won a nice pot in a $1-$2 NL game and "tipped" over $100 for his next drink.

What's so confusing? There are rules in place to keep money in play on the table. Tipping the dealer from your stack removes money from the table. Tipping from your pocket doesn't remove money from the table. Its not rocket science.

Its a stupid argument either way.

No. You have poor reading comprehension skills.

There are two ways to tip. 1. From your pocket or 2. from your stack. Someone was surprised that you could tip from your pocket. I was saying if for some reason somebody wanted to make one of these against the rules (ie. "If anything" ) then it would make sense to make 2 illegal and force people to tip from their pockets to avoid taking money off the table.

I then said that that would be annoying and so its allowed too.

Anyway this is more time then this deserves. If you still don't understand or still disagree feel free to flame away. I don't really care.

Re: Is tipping from your pocket illegal?

jjshabado's post makes perfect sense. What's so hard to understand?

1. The only place it would make sense to ban tipping from is your stack, because it's taking money off the table.

2. But if they did that, tipping could only come from your pocket, which would be a pain and hurt dealers, so that would be a bad rule.

Conclusion: Even though the only ban that makes sense (as opposed to banning tipping from pocket) is tipping from your stack, we shouldn't do either for practical reasons. i.e., leave it the way it is.

Except I thought it was pretty clear that the first MAKES SENSE was relative, and the second was absolute.

Its perfectly logical to say Jamie Gold is a good poker player, but is a donkey in high stakes game. See how context is important?
