Im kinda new to this forum, but i need ur help plzzzzzzzzz

this post is for all the serious poker players who have to return to college this semester. Im not sure if people on the forum know me, I grinded 2/4-3/6 and won a decent amount (4.5-5.0) pt BB. I dont have many hands at 5/10 and above, so far my stats indicate im down to break even. I also won the 20 rebuy, the sunday million, and go0t second in a 109. Anyway, i deceided that i wanted to go back to school and im taking 16 credits. So my question is to people like stinger (or anyoone else who has made enough to turn pro, but went back to school) or anyone who has insight is how do you do it? It hit me this morning when i was walking to class how busy i had been moving into my new place in dinkytown with my friends in dinkytown, minneapolis (holla). Between class, homeworjk, the gym, and trying to keep an active social life ive had no time to do anything else. In my house we dont have internet so i figure this is an accurate picture of what my life would be like without poker. This post is kind of a rant but the questions i need answered are: If your playin poker seriously and taking classes, how do you manage your time to do this? Second qurestion is: do you think its wise to maybe take a break from poker for a semester? This isnt what i really want to do but something has to give and i want to get good grades as well, i like to learn. Also ive seen SO MANY EXCELLENT no limit cash and tourney players take a break or get lazy with there games only to get opassed up by young kids like me who are willing to work hard and improve themselves. So i fear that if i take a break this might be a consequence. What should i do?

Well im not sure who knows it and its really relevant to the topic imo, im really proud that im an all around player, but thats not thye point of this thread so if your not familiar with tournaments at all pretend i won 166 buyins at 5/10 this year instead.

Re: Im kinda new to this forum, but i need ur help plzzzzzzzzz

just dont let poker take over is the real key. I'd still play, but make sure you put life and school first. Maybe set aside a couple hours a day and limit your poker/2+2 to that. Play less tournaments imo since it really sucks to be in the middle of one and have someone call you up and ask you to do something fun.

[/ QUOTE ]

I find it unlikely that you could be a successful full-time student and play poker "seriously." One or the other would have to suffer a bit for you to be as successful as possible at the other.

You might be able to succeed in school if you treat poker like a part-time job and only play during the hours that you would otherwise be working. But be careful not to keep playing past your stop time (i.e. when you're stuck, or deep in a tournament, or in a good game, etc.). You'd need a lot of self-discipline not to let poker creep into your study, class, and socializing time. And don't underestimate the importance of socializing in college. It's an important part of the process.

[ QUOTE ]
Second qurestion is: do you think its wise to maybe take a break from poker for a semester?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes. But not necessary if you can limit your time to a few hours a day like a part-time job.

This is probably the wrong forum, too. The Psych forum is usually where stuff like this ends up.

When I'm in school I just play how much ever I feel like it. Usually that's <10hrs/week. Just have fun, like ski said don't let poker take over. Just do what you want. this post is extremely lame.

Man, honestly I don't know why all you guys that can beat mid stakes are still in school. I finished school and am currently not using my degree for jack [censored]. I don't think alot of you realize how good we have it. You can always go back and get your degree if u want, but there may come a day when we can't play online poker and you will have sacrificed hundreds of thousands of dollars for some stupid sheet of paper that you could have gone back to get anyways.

I know 99.99% of this forum disagrees w/ me, but I think right now the money is more important than the degree. I finished up school while party poker was still around, and I'd give anything to go back and play another million hands on party instead of going to [censored] class. Don't get me wrong, the college atmosphere is a TON of fun, but you can still live a college lifestyle w/ all your friends, go to all the parties, but isntead of going to class, put in the hours getting hands in, you can make in 2 years what most of your friends will make their first decade out of school.....

As I said, I know most disagree, but that's just my 2 cents

I agree with this to some extent, but I do think it's important, that if you do do poker instead of school, that you play a lot and build up a ton in savings rather than try to just make like 2-300k a year.

life is about sacrafices and if poker is that important to you, you'll have to sacrifice either the gym, socializing with friends, parties, and maybe even school (not in any specific order). sure, you won the million tourney and that's all good but where do you go from here? don't look short term, look long term. will you be happy grinding it, day in and day out, online or in a casino playing poker? or do you have aspirations of being a more productive member in society? gamblings a honest living, but also a self-involving one, unless you acquire enough weath to enable yourself to become a philanthropist. here's a thought, purchase a home or real-estate. there are a ton of foreclosures which will drive the market down shortly. everyone can give you advice, in the end it's your decision to make and yours alone. good luck.

This thread is hilarious.

OP: I agree with Albert, you wont be getting top grades if you still play a lot of poker(which you have to do in order to stay on top and make a lot of cash) so I think you gotta give priority to either studies or poker.

serious response:

its really not that hard to mix winning successfully at MSNL (possibly HSNL, but i wouldnt know since i havent played it over big samples) and staying in school. the only problem is you cant play as much, but a little structure in your life never hurt anybody.

however, from the looks of several hands you have posted i think you have several leaks and you should probably focus on improving as a player instead of thinking about how much money you can possibly make.
