Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
Last night an English acquaintance of mine invited me over for dinner and I brought along a friend. We had fun, drank a lot, and ended up crashing at his place because of the intense rain. I wake up to my friend trying to suck my dick. Not cool. My hotel isn't too far away so I get the [censored] out. As I'm walking, some guy offers to give me a ride. This has happened several times before with no problems.
The guy takes me two minutes down some road, hops off the bike, and holds a knife to my throat while his friends go through my pockets, stealing my phone, cash, and debit/credit cards. The knife is so dull that I literally grab it by the blade and take it away from him without cutting myself. He then pulls out a a taser and I realize there's no way to win this and I give him the knife back. In retrospect I'm probably lucky they didn't kick the [censored] out of me. So I'm now totally [censored] and have no way of getting money even if someone gave it to me. I'll have to have my family fly me back to the US or give me enough money to last me until I can get new cards. I'm not sure which part of this sucks the most. I'm not even going to bother filing a police report because this happened with four guys I couldn't pick out of a lineup on a street I can't pronounce. |

You could probably make an easy fifty if you went back to your buddies place.

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
If you had a baseball bat could you have beaten him in a fight?
|
Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
In a TR full of very weird, inexplicable, under explained events, are you seriously in the habit of accepting unsolicited rides from strangers even when your destination is not very far away?
Do you have a younger sister? |

I think you missed a trip report here. [/ QUOTE ] It happened exactly the way you'd think it would. Just use your imagination. Or don't. |

All things considered, they were pretty nice about it. In the US I probably just would have gotten jumped. |

So how much are taxis or rickshaws or whatever the hell they have in Thailand?

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
Seriously though, how big of a bind are you really in? Do you have any money at all? Can the embassy help you with ID so you can get money wired or anything?

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
[ QUOTE ]
If you had a baseball bat could you have beaten him in a fight? [/ QUOTE ] I could definitely have taken on the one guy with dull knife since it would only have the stabiness and none of the cuttiness. I don't think I would have been able to take four guys armed with a knife and taser unless they came at me one at a time, movie style. An aluminum bat would have given me like another 4 hitpoints. |

Seriously though, how big of a bind are you really in? Do you have any money at all? Can the embassy help you with ID so you can get money wired or anything? [/ QUOTE ] I emailed a bunch of my relatives. It's 2am in the US so I probably won't hear anything for a few hours. Some of them think I'm a total degen for playing poker, but they're not about to let me starve. I have literally around $.40 right now so I probably won't be able to eat until tonight, but that's not too big of a deal. I have my passport so no problems there. The thing that really pisses me off is that I usually leave my epassporte card in my room in case something like this happens. I happened to have it with me yesterday because I made a withdrawal earlier in the day. My other problem is that this gay dude lives like two houses down from where I'm staying. I saw him about 20 minutes ago and confronted him. This guy is significantly bigger and stronger than me and has a reputation for getting into fights, but I scared him badly enough for him to lock himself in his house. He works for the government (Ministry of Justice) and claims he his going to make my life hell if I stay in Laos. There's a strong possibility that that he's not BSing here. This is what I'm most concerned about now. It's possible some cops could show up or something and I'd have no way to bribe them. |
Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
OP,
Gay dude needs some loving and you need cash. You know what needs to be done. |

[ QUOTE ] ...hops off the bike, and holds a knife to my throat while his friends go through my pockets.... [/ QUOTE ] How did 4+ of you fit on a bike? [/ QUOTE ] There were two or three guys on another bike. I accepted the ride because I didn't know exactly where I was, just the general area, and I was happy to not have to wander around semi-aimlessly. The Lao people are generally very helpful and similar things have happened before without incident. |
Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
You need to got to youtube and look up Bas Rutten's Self Defense lessons. You could have used that knife to make the assailant slit his own throat.

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
Wow, sounds like a really bad situation.
I think the lesson here is no matter how friendly everyone seems In a foreign culture you will still always be seen as a walking ATM and an outsider. I have read many of your posts and I am very surprised at your actions seeing as you seemed like a savvy traveler. Not taking rides from strangers seems like traveling in a third world country 101. |

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
I'm not saying what I did wasn't stupid but I was still pretty drunk and wasn't in my right mind because someone I considered a good friend of mine TRIED TO SUCK MY DICK WHILE I WAS ASLEEP. That whole situation forced me to walk around an unfamiliar area at something like 3:30 in the morning.

Re: Trip Report: Getting Robbed at Knifepoint.
