BMW Championship

Currently watching the BMW championships at work. Anyone else doing the same? Looks like Tiger is having a good round so far.

I'm following it on PGAtour.com, don't have enough chance to watch it. Some dismal bottom-end scores out there. Tiger doing well thusfar.

As I type this, Oberholser, who was #29 coming in, has withdrawn. Granted, we don't have reasoning yet, but seemingly another instance of a player whose ranking is close to a cutoff not caring enough to stick around.

Seems to me there is an entirely different way to frame this: another instance of a player who knows his own body and game well enough to know that he needs to rest now to have a chance to advance.

If you look at the guys who play every week on tour, you'll quickly note their rate at making cuts and the lack of top 10s.

This Golf Channel coverage is delayed and it took me awhile to figure out why. It's not the weather, but apparently because the points leaders teed off this morning they decided to show them. Makes sense but argh, wish I wasn't spoiled about the results.

This is why I'll gladly watch it at home. Just got done watching it delayed since I golfed today. They're saying that Stricker may have more support than Tiger - is this really possible? I thought that Tiger had more backing than Phil last week and he's as close as it gets in that department. I still think the casual fan that comes out to watch Tiger pulls for him no matter who the other guy is.

I tend to root for the underdog, thus against Tiger, but this Stricker story is so remarkable I will be rooting that much harder. Super nice guy + completely lost his game for a few years + improbable comeback = Cinderella story. And I like those.

I was just watching my DVR of the third round as well and I thought I heard them say Phil made 52 out of 52 five-footers (and in) last week? Is that right? All I can say is Wow.

It's impressive but that number inlcudes every single <1 ft or less tap-in. A better measurement would be how many putts he made in the 3ft-5ft range if they could do that for example.

While that is impressive, didn't Tiger make like every putt inside 4 ft all of last year? Can't remember exactly, but it was something crazy like that.

Generally I agree but...52/52? Let's say 35 of those were the kick-in variety, which is generous. The big misunderstanding that most amateurs have is how pros "should" make the short putts. They don't understand pros average far worse than 100% from that range, primarily because pros are usually putting on the equivalent of glass to the average player.

It takes a steady hand and good reads to hit every 3-5 footer in a PGA event.

I agree, but my point was that it wasn't 52/52 five-footers, it was probably more like 17/17 in that range like you said, which is still very good. I heard Mickelson does this drill to end every putting practice session in which he has to make a 100 straight three to five footers from different angles and if he misses one he starts over.

Re: BMW Championship

While I'm still undecided in liking this Fedex thing, (I hate calling it playoffs) I have really enjoyed watching golf the last couple weeks. And I think these are the reasons:

1. Tiger playing well.
2. Phil competing with Tiger. (even though I really don't like Phil that much)
3. No Furyk and Dimarco. I really despise these two jackasses.
4. Johnny Miller!
5. The Steve Stricker story.
6. Lack of weather delays.

I'm sure I'll think of some others, but watching golf lately has been awesome in my opinion.

DiMarco's ok, but I hate Furyk. He never smiles. He says the most ridiculously cliche things during interviews while looking like he genuinely hates talking to anyone. And his swing.

I've gotten crap for getting on Phil, but I don't hate him.

There is a difference between despising them and thinking they're enjoyable to watch.

I don't really care for either of them but I see no reason to despise them.

Maybe you despise them because they swing worse then you but they're on tour?=)

Nah, I find him annoying too. His stupid routine of walking back from the ball two-three times before he finally makes his shot/put is really lame. He just takes too long time. Also, I don't think I've ever seen him smile. And finally, his playing style is that of the classic grinder. Rarely any spectacular shots, but rarely any big misses either - it just doesn't make for good entertainment.

LOL at East Lake being essentially unplayable next week. And I see it's the permanent site of the Tour Champ? Kinda like how they tried to make Valhalla host the PGA Champ every couple years. Sheesh, like having the Super Bowl in Minneapolis every year.

And who in the name of God at PriceWaterhouse signed off on this current set of commercials?
