Going to the Bronx = imminent danger?

Five of my buddies and I (Toronto residents and Blue Jay fans all) are heading down to the Bronx to catch the Jays' three-game series on Sept. 21-23. The first day I'll wear my Jays hat, but otherwise take it all in and keep a lowish profile.

On at least one of the other two days, though, I'm considering throwing on my awesome 2004 BoSox ALCS Champions t-shirt, and putting on my BoSox hat, recently acquired, and going as a Red Sox fan. I'd try not to be fractious, but I'd be happy to discuss Jeter's overrated D or Theo Epstein's brilliance with any passionate locals.

Is this a terrible idea? Am I going to get my ass kicked, or at least covered in watery, American beer? Or will it all just be good-natured grousing and baseball rivalry one-upmanship? I'm sure Yankee fans are decent (if spoilt) people, and perhaps I'm worrying too much, but I did make it to a Leafs-Penguins playoff game in Pittsburgh a few years back, and I still don't know how we got back over state lines without a police escort. My Sundin jersey has never been the same.

Right field bleachers. Matt Stairs territory.

I agree that I'm probably overreacting, but I do want to be prepared.

I didn't order them myself, but that's what I've been told. That or in the bank of seats beside them in foul territory. Definitely well out there in right field.

you are a moron - sorry dude

just wear normal clothes and act like a normal person. wearing red sox clothing to a game the red sox aren't even playing is asking to get your ass kicked/beer thrown on you.

Haha, out with the Bleacher Creatures?

I wore a Yanks hat to a BoSox game earlier this year. Got some pretty weird looks, though, a few comments but nothing serious. I had to stow a BoSox souvenir t-shirt I bought though, so as not to give anyone the wrong idea.

Well, fair enough. This was indeed the question.

Still wondering if it might be just a little fun as well as moronic, though.

pure class.

i've worn my red sox hat to games at yankee stadium that didnt involve the red sox. sure, some people felt the need to taunt or make comments, but nobody tried to pick a fight with me (although, thats mostly because Y.S. is filled with all talk/no action folks).

wear your colors and be happy about it. i'm sure there will be red sox fans there that day along with you.

I have a 46 game plan in the rf bleechers
Your in no physical danger but expect to get yelled and cursed at a lot. (if this was 10 years ago you WOULD be in physical danger)
Some idiots might throw peanuts at you or somehting. If that happens I suggest you wait till the ninth inning and beat the [censored] out of them.

i'm just saying what my perception of the situation is. why would you wear the colors of a team that's not playing to the game? imo, it's retarded. wearing the rival's team triply so. either you're trying to prove something or looking to pick a fight. saying 'i just want to support my team!' sounds delusional.

Oddly, I've been harassed more in the Skydome for no good reason whatsoever than I have in visiting ballparks when one could argue that I was at least tacitly instigating. I agree with Triumph that there's something flagrant/stupid about pulling out the gear when the Sox aren't even playing, but that's just part of the gig.

Take out some nice life insurance before you're going if you're sitting in the bleachers, else you have nothing to worry about.

look, i like to watch baseball as much as the next guy, and take the game as seriously as anybody, but the mere fact that the guy has to wonder if he is in physical danger because a couple new yorkers might be too insecure for good natured ribbing is what is wrong with this whole picture.

if he was sitting next to me in fenway park as a jays fan in a yankees hat, i would think he was kind of a dick, but i wouldnt punch him [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

last week, bosox were playing the yankees, while i was in cambridge, ma. i chose to watch the game outside some convenience store in H-square, b/c they had an HD screen in the window. 50 or so people were standing next to me. atmosphere was lively. every passerby would check the score, make a comment, watch a minute or so, and kindly walk around the crowd rather than in front of the tv.

then damon punched a 2-run single into RF. i was pretty damn excited and clapped my hands. i got a lot of looks and a "who was that?!" yell from the crowd. fortunately for me, i was saved when another yankee fan (this time actually wearing a hat) started cheering in a loud manner "GO JOHNNY!!!". that guy was not-so-politely asked to leave.

this was essentially an innocent scenario. i imagine it would be MUCH worse if i was on a landsdowne st bar, or in the bleachers. btw, i don't expect a red sox fan to get better treatment in a yankee bar or in the yankee stadium bleachers.

don't be an idiot and don't antagonize fans of the other team.

kyro 09-05-2007 04:21 PM

Re: Going to the Bronx = imminent danger?

You wouldn't, but I'm sure there are some Red Sox fans that would, if they had a few beers in them, and were the black hole that is the right-field bleachers at Yankee Stadium.

that's the 'constant' part of the equation - sports fans, especially in the northeast, tend to be [censored]. by going to a baseball game, i'm not going to get all the fans group hugging by the end of the night. the way i can avoid a fight is not calling attention to myself by wearing the jersey of a TEAM THAT ISN'T PLAYING.

anyone naive enough to wear red sox gear to a yankees game when the sox aren't playing is asking to get beat up - both parties are [censored].

I was there, in the right field bleachers, last month for a Tigers-Yanks game in Sheffield's return

Bunch of Tiger fans by me (I'm wearing a Pujols jersey)---no issues

The Tiger fans were loud and obnoxious, too. I wish they had gotten kicked out.

tigers won 9-6 or something close to that

if you wanna wear your redsox [censored] just be prepared to get yelled at
I went to game 5 of the Mets Cards 2000 NLCS at Shea with a Yankee hat and Clemens jersey (a few months after he hit Piazza in the head)
I knew what I was in for.

I went to the Red Sox game last week wearing Sox gear in the Left field Upper Tier. All the surrounding Yankee fans were friendly.

Last year I went to the Skydome wearing Sox gear, I found the Toronto fan's to be even more enjoyable.

Before that my friend wore his Mets gear to a Mets game at Fenway sitting in the bleachers. He got slapped in the face and thrown out for fighting. Go figure.

in the UK you wouldn't even get in the ground. the police would remove you for your own safety. You may even be charged with inciting violence or something.

In fact not just the UK. that would be the outcome across most of the world
