post one film you wish to nominate. I'll give you all until Wednesday. Then, I'll put the nominations into a poll and the winner will be our next film!

Only qualification: if you nominate a film, you MUST be willing to watch whatever movie is chosen and contribute to the discussion that follows. If you think you won't be able to, don't bother nominating anything!

My choice:

Sex and Lucia

Willing is one thing and able is another. A lot of the more obscure stuff is only available if you have online rental capabilities but I don't want to get bogged down in that debate again. That said I already saw as much of Sex and Lucia as I ever will

I nominate Detour
Detour

I think it's discussion worthy. I know Dom and Pryor have both applauded it in the past and I had a few problems with it.

I also think there should be a rule that you can't vote for your own nomination.

So, I'm new to TLDR, but is there a typical genre here? Would I get laughed at for suggesting something like "Lone Star?"

I'll agree with dom and say this is perfectly fine. Getting to see films that may be overlooked or may be found a bit further afield is what this is all about IMO

I also want to second 8 1/2. It's been about 16 months since I last saw it and this was one of those films that I knew when I first saw it that I needed to watch again to really get a feel for(especially after seeing a few more italian art films in that time span)

Finally rejoining, so I won't nominate. But I've been wanting to see Sex and Lucia for a while, so I'll 2nd that.

One of the great American movies my one of its greatest filmmakers? Of course you won't get laughed at.

Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher. I'm sure this would cause some controversy.

I'll nominate Bubba Ho-Tep, which has an extraordinary subtext underneath what is on paper a cheesy and silly horror flick, but in fruition is anything but

('Frailty' and 'Ed Wood' were also contenders)

I feel I can offer no nominations because I don't know any fancy foreign films with cool sounding names. I will, however, cast a vote when the time comes.

diebitter 09-01-2007 01:24 PM

Re: fine, I\'ll start a new DVD CLUB thread

This isn't just for fancy foreign films. Any film you really liked that most of us wouldn't have seen is good.

PLEASE! Nominate an interesting, entertaining, discussion worthy movie. We don't need fancy foreign films with cool sounding names. After all they are what killed the last incarnation of the DVD club. Not that the occassional foreign film is bad but they shouldn't dominate. I wish I woulda grabbed the reigns when I had a chance because it's gonna die a cruel death again I fear. It needs more structure and organization and the way it is now will end up the way it was when people just stopped discussing.

Re: fine, I\'ll start a new DVD CLUB thread

I'm okay with watching foreign films . I just meant I'm too ignorant to nominate any, that's all. But I'll gladly watch whatever you guys settle on and I will definitely try to contribute to discussion.

Mrbaseball, think positive!

IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A FOREIGN FILM!!!! In fact some of us would prefer it if it weren't Nominate something you love or something YOU really want to see. Don't be a lemming.

I wouldn't mind re-watching and discussing Detour.

Definitely one of the strangest films of all time.

Katy

Out of interest, do you consider Brit or Australian movies as 'foreign'?

katyseagull 09-02-2007 10:41 AM

Re: fine, I\'ll start a new DVD CLUB thread

No I don't consider them "foreign". Well, except when the British speak too quickly and it sounds like gibberish and I wish there were subtitles.

I'm sorry I wrote my above comment about foreign films. I actually LIKE foreign films. I've enjoyed just about all of the films we picked for the DVD club. I want to be in the DVD club but I mostly watch current films so don't feel comfortable nominating, that's all. I'm convinced everyone's already seen all the ones I'm interested in watching. Lone Star, One False Move, and Red Rock West were very good films from the same period (more or less) that never found an audience. All are worth discussing IMO (but I'll go for Sex and Lucia since it's on the way).

Sex and Lucia. I just watched it. If Sex and Lucia is elected I'll contribute what I can to the best of my limited ability.

Quick review: The most wonderfully acted, photographed and written film one could imagine on this sort of material. Everything eventually connects in the most subtle and interesting and satisfying way. The sex was great too but I hardly noticed (maybe I'm too old or my gf left me drained ).

~ Rick

PS Is this DVD club an actual club that you have to be sponsored to become a member (sort of like an exclusive yacht club) and could you possibly be blackballed or whatever? Are the bylaws posted somewhere?

Hey! I'm glad SOMEONE besides me thinks this film is great...it's amazing what more you get out of it on multiple vewings, too...I promised Katy I'd start a thread on it so we can talk about it...

And no, you can join the club....the only rule is that if you vote you my promise to watch and discuss the chosen film.

Re: fine, I\'ll start a new DVD CLUB thread

I thought it was very good. I watched it for the first time about two years ago. A couple months ago I was reminded of it for some reason and couldn't get the plot straight in my head anymore so I Netflixed it for a 2nd time.

Paz Vega is amazing, in more ways then one and her character is what made me like this film. The story was interesting, I really liked the way it was told, I found a number of the other characters to be mildly interesting but I loved her character.

Saw it tonight based on it being mentioned in this forum.

From the upper left corner of the Rotten Tomatoes review page:

By Jeff Vice - Deseret News movie critic:

"The Piano Teacher" is the sort of movie that discourages American audiences from ever wanting to see another foreign film."

But I liked this review even better.

I am tired and not reading, but if someone can tell me what movie I was supposed to watch, I can try to get it from netflix and do so. No promises of course, but hey...I posted in the Before Sunrise thread so now I can join one of these again. Haha.

I feel stupid posting in this thread as pretty much everyone here has more knowledge of film than I do; but Thank you for Smoking is a really good flick.
