Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Not who is good, who sucks, not who is most important. Just who would people most recognize a picture of. For the pope, lets assume that you'd have to pick Benedict out of pictures of various popes.
Rank them: Tiger Woods Michael Jordan Paul McCartney David Beckham George W. Bush Pope Benedict XVI |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
George W. Bush
Michael Jordan Paul McCartney Pope Benedict XVI Tiger Woods David Beckham |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Most of the people will not be able to tell a difference between Bush and Beckham, let alone Woods and Jordan
You know why? Can you tell a difference between Kim Chen Ir and Mao? |

George W. Bush Paul McCartney David Beckham Tiger Woods Pope Benedict XVI Michael Jordan [/ QUOTE ] |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I think Oprah would be in that group, and select actors that starred in international hits (think DiCaprio and Winslet, and probably Tom Cruise).
Edit: I suck at reading OP - the post quoted before me is probably correct, although I think Jordan is more recognizable than the Pope. |

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I think Yao Ming should be in the top 5, top 10 at least. A billion people know who he is. Much more so than Jordan or Tiger.

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I think narrowing this down makes it more interesting.
|
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Jacko.... people with crappy taste in music the world over love this freak
|
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I didn't even know who david beckham was until I googled it just a second ago.
|
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Out of these people I can't imagine the pope being in anything but last place.
I'd guess first place is between Beckham and McCartney, Bush third, Jordan and Woods meh. |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
George W. Bush - obvious I think since everyone has an opinion on him
Michael Schumacher - Everywhere else except US knows him Tiger Woods - popular US/China, what about S. America/India? David Beckham - Football(soccer) media whore Michael Jordan - Fading Paul McCartney - Faded Pope Benedict XVI - only ~16% of the world is Catholic |

Michael Schumacher - Everywhere else except US knows him [/ QUOTE ] I'm gonna be honest and say I had no clue who this was (before googling obv). |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?

Yao Ming David Beckham George W. Bush Maybes: Micheal Jordan Tiger Woods Ronaldinho |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
George W. Bush
Tiger Woods Michael Jordan Paul McCartney David Beckham Pope Benedict XVI |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I honestly could not recognise a single baseball / basketball / American football player in history. Michael Jordan? No idea. Tall muscular black guy I guess, but I can't put a face to him. Maybe if I googled him it'd look familiar, but I couldn't tell him from Magic Jordan (the other name I know). In fact with the exception of boxers and tennis players, the only American sportsmen I could recognise are OJ Simpson, Tiger Woods, Hulk Hogan, and - oh wait, a basketball player - Dennis Rodman because he was on the TV show Big Brother here in the UK, but I had no idea who he was at the start. These sports that are just big in the US don't mean [censored] to the rest of the world.

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Bush: known world wide
Beckham: known every where but the US and Canada and has some penetration there Woods: Known any where that sports results are published, broadcast for major sporting events The Pope: known to all Catholics and a proportion of non Catholics Jordan: retired player of a minority sport McCartney: stopped being culturally relevant thirty years ago |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Jordan and Woods are way on the bottom of the list. With Woods probably being ahead of Jordan.
Beckham and Bush are at the top, then the pope, then McCartney |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
people are grossly underestimating how well known Tiger is.
|
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Aren't actual studies done on this?
I think Jordan, the US president, and Mickey Mouse always fared well. I'm remembering this from when I was 12. |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?

Magic Jordan (the other name I know). [/ QUOTE ] Magic Johnson... i remember hearing a study like this once, too... and i'm pretty sure michael jordan was more recognizable than abraham lincoln |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?

Michael Schumacher - Everywhere else except US knows him [/ QUOTE ] I call BS. Schumacher isn't a household name in India, China, Africa.... I could go on and on. Yeah, he is huge in Europe but its not a global penetration at all. |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I'm pretty sure it's either Jordan or Bush at the top. If Bush wasn't completely worthless it'd be Jordan by a wiiiiiiiiiiiide margin.

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Why are you putting Yao up there? Yeah there's a billion people in China, but I doubt the 600 million peasant farmers who have never looked at a tv or newspaper know who he is. And outside of the US basketball isn't even all that popular.
|
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
I had to google Yao. I thought maybe he was Prime Minister of China. Apparently not.
Where are Ronaldo, Ronaldhino and Zidane on this list????? |
Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Oh and Madonna has to be there, fwiw

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?

Re: Who is most recognizable worldwide?
Tiger's face is pretty recognizable, but not many Chinese or Indians would recognize him although I'm sure some would. Thats a large population bas to be not very well known in.
Jordan is so recognizable. He is easily the most recognizable on this list to Africans. He is also pretty well recognized in Asia, especially China and there are a billion+ people there. People in Mexico and the rest of the Latin world have a pretty good idea of what he looks like compared to there knowledge of other figures. I honestly couldn't pick McCartney out of a lineup although I have some sort of idea what he looks like. That doesn't bode well for the countries where most people have never even heard his name. Beckham is known by almost all of the European countries as well as a decent portion of Latin America and Africa I'm sure. However, I doubt many Asians would recognize him at all and even where soccer is popular not everyone could pick him from a lineup. George Bush isn't even recognized by many Americans so I doubt he is recognized by the majority of Chinese people or Indians. I just asked two Catholic friends if they could pick out Pope Benedict from other popes and one said he thought he could and the other said maybe, but he doubts it. I can't see many non-catholics being able to do it if thats the case with pretty religious catholics. My best guess from this info is: Jordan Tiger Beckham Bush Pope McCartney |
