Dealers that are.....

to short to reach around the table.

Whilst playing at the 1/2 NL tables at the Imperial Palace this weekend (I know, that was my first mistake) - I can't tell you how many dealers there, couldn't reach around the table to grab cards and chips.

It was driving me crazy - sorry, but I'm playing poker here, trying to relax with my Scotch and enjoy my weekend away. I expect to get dealers that can actually run a game without constantly asking people to push cards or chips closer so they can reach them. They need to be tipping me.

Does this bug anyone else???

Arrogant twits who can't toss their cards or chip more than 3mm toward the dealer?

Yes, those inconsiderate boobs do bug me. Unless they have ALS, or some other affliction. I am sure you have a doctor's slip explaining why you have zero strength to expend while playing poker.

I forget where, but one time I had a short woman dealer. At the beginning of her shift she asked us (very nicely too) to push our cards/chips where she could reach them.

Two hands later when she had to ask again she ran her finger over the felt to leave a mark as far as she could reach. AHHHH… then we all used it like a betting line.

The following dealers also got an easy reach cause we all still kept our cards & chips forward of the line.

Hey, no problem.

If you have a gripe because dealers have short arms...you've got far bigger issues than poker

Are you talking about IP in Vegas?

I haven't played at IP in a long time (in fact since they moved downstairs). But the last time I played the tables were so large that there are no dealers who can reach around them. I have a pretty good wing span but I would hate to deal on those tables.

Those are in fact the largest tables in town with some funky squared off corners instead of being rouded. Sahara's are quite large too, they will play 12 handed in tournaments.

no f'ing kidding.

I try to place the chips out there far enough.
I don't put the chips all the way into the damn pot of course. But I try to leave them far enough out there so that the dealer doesn't have to dive across the table to reach it.

It just seems like common courtesy.

People who can't figure out to do this with their chips and cards strike me as being similar to sitting at dinner with some guy and asking him to pass the pepper and him just moving it 1 inch closer to me so that I still can't reach it without having to dive across him.

Seriously, WTF is wrong with people who can't figure out that they should be doing this?
One or two times not figuring out is somewhat excuseable.

But to continue to place your chips and cards that far out of reach after seeing that the dealer can't possibly reach it is just bizarrely inconsiderate.

I've sat next to guys who place the chips barely 2 inches in front of them and then just leave it there.
Sometime I nudge their bet forward for them when the time comes for the dealer to collect them or I kind of wait for the dealer to ask and even then I sometimes kind of do it for them because they are just clueless and somehow still don't see that the dealer is struggling to reach it.

After the dealer asks freaking once anyone with 2 brain-cells should get the idea that it's a fairly large table and not everyone is 6'4".

God people that don't place their chips further out who should otherwise be perfectly capable of doing so drive me nuts. Makes me really want to take all their money just because they suck at life so much. And normally I don't get such competitive juices at the table.

If I am on the floor just call me over. I will show you the mark and put some tape on the table so you dont' forget where to put your card. It isn't that hard, jsut put your chips and cards where the dealer can reach them.

Not to mention the OP needs a KITN for letting this type of thing bother him at a poker table. OP, if the dealer asking for the above bugs you that much, it's time to take a look inside and find out why you're so PO'd over something so trivial.

Re: Dealers that are.....

I'm pretty good about pitching my cards into the muck (even from clear across the table) and placing my bets neatly within the dealers reach, but doesn't it seem odd that poker rooms would hire dealers with really short arms?

Shouldn't an adequate reach be a prerequisite to becoming a poker dealer. Assuming that pokeroom managers have a huge applicant pool to choose from, wouldn't "short-armers" be one of the first cuts?

I really don't care as long as they run the game well, but it just mkes you think. Of course, if it's a cute little Asian dealer, I have no quams.

How about hiring someone who can do the job? Or perhaps the BLackjack dealers shouldn't be able to reach your bet as well???

The only thing arrogant here is your reply.

We have one dealer at the bike who uses a kind of back scratcher to rake the chips in. She has a lot of trouble with seats 3 and 7.

Re: Dealers that are.....

Yes - I've seen several at Commerce do that as well

In retrospect, the tables were bigger than what I usually play on. It really just slowed down the game, and it seemed like they were continually asking the corner players to throw their chips/cards in further. Perhaps I'm being nitty, but I can't blame the players, since they were throwing it over the line.

Oh well, it's in the past now. no biggie.

There used to be several dealers at CAZ who used back scratchers to gather chips...Those things were banned after a guy got wacked in the knuckles with it.

The dealer is running the game correctly by asking you to push your cards. You are one that is holding up the game by not accomodating a simple request.

I see players just placing bets and cards 2 cms in front of them. No dealer can reach them, let alone some of the smaller girls who deal at the Taj/Borg. If I'm next to these people, I often push their chips in to help the dealer, but serious folks...common courtesy.

Tossing the cards and chips alittle closer to the dealer makes for a faster pace more hands per 30 mins especially if its time collection game.

Re: Dealers that are.....

I was there last month, if you are talking about Imperial Palace in Vegas. The tables there are freaking huge! The size of a full size bed!!

I don't think anyone, except maybe Yao, could reach the chips at seats 4 and 8.

Rick Nebiolo 08-30-2007 01:47 AM

Re: Dealers that are.....

Of course I agree with the consensus response so far.

As an aside there are players in LA (and I would assume in other areas) who when running bad (or just to be ornery) deliberately place their folded hands just out of reach of the dealer. Sure the dealer can retrieve it but only after getting up from (usually her) chair and painfully reaching (try this two hundred times a day - it's painful).

It's the sort of sneaky passive/aggressive yet abusive behavior which unfortunately flies just under the radar. It's obnoxious and sickening.

These days if I'm sitting next to such a person with a good angle I've learned to continuously push the player's cards within easy reach of the dealer without comment or emotion. Usually this embarrasses the a_hole into doing the right thing after a while.

Maybe the casinos need to start breeding Hold'em table sized people?
And perhaps the waitresses should hold the glass up to people and put the straw in their mouth? I mean they should be tipping me for having to lift the glass myself. And what about me having to WALK from my car...perhaps one of those beds that 4 strong men carry me in?

Am I reading you right? In response to the suggestion that we recognize it's to everybody's benefit to move the game along quickly, and to recognize that a dealer isn't a piece of meat but an actual person.... your immediately jumped to comparing this to somebody putting a straw in your mouth?

Really? This is logical for you? If so, let me introduce you to my friend Shades of Gray. He tends to clash with Polarity, but he's a good guy once you get to know him.
