Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
Last friday I felt like getting a bit drunk and I wasn't in the mood for beer so I bought a bottle of rum. As I expected, it tasted like crap but I consumed a lot of it by holding my nose while drinking. I still have over half the bottle left so I'm interested in some ways to consume it without having it taste so horrible.

A mojito, which is pretty similar, but its made w/ rum. |
Re: Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
I usually hate spiced rum, btw, but in cold weather spiced rum and chai tea is very good. Not as good as a cold drink though.

Re: Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
Yeah, I really think the best solution is to buy better rum. Here are two to look for:
Cruzan estate light rum. For me, this stuff costs exactly the same as Bacardi, but it's much higher quality. They actually oak age it, so it's both smoother and more flavorful. Mount Gay Barbados Rum. This is a gold colored rum, but it has more flavor than the cheaper dark rums. It's also a great buy. |
Re: Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
either buy/drink good quality rum rather than the swill you get off the shelf at 7-11, or make a rum cake.

I don't like Mojitos because of the mint flavor. Interestingly, consuming mass amounts of Cachaca have actually turned me back on to Tequila. |

1 part rum to 37 parts cheap bourbon, shots.

Re: Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
I'll probably try Dr. Pepper or Cream Soda w/rum. I don't think the quality of rum really would matter to me as I hate the taste of alcohol in general except for beers and champagne.

Re: Non-disgusting ways to consume rum
Another great one when you're sick:
1 oz spiced or regular rum Hot (microwaved) orange juice some brown sugar Really opens up the sinuses. Edit: In fact, someone should start a thread this winter about hot alcoholic drinks. |

There's a pretty notable difference in flavor between Cachaca and rum. A Caipirinha made with rum does not taste very good if you've ever had the real thing. [/ QUOTE ] Not sure I agree. If you think about what cachaca actually is (distilled, fermented sugar cane juice, normally not aged) then this is exactly the same thing as a lot of basic non-aged rums. If you get the right raw-tasting kerosene-smelling rum (e.g., Ron Palido from Andalusia) you can do a very similar drink to a caipirinha. Cachaca is like grappa: not originally thought of as a classy thing to drink at all, but elevated to a lofty position by decadent western alcoholics. Gisborne, you've had a lot of good suggestions already about how to drink your rum. If you go down the rum and coke route cut a lime into quarters, squeeze one quarter into each glass and drop the squeezed segment in. If you want to go over the top, you could try a La Floridita cocktail. (This is saved from girliness by the fact that Papa Hemingway used to drink them.) It's rum, rosso vermouth, lime juice, white creme de cacao, and a splash of grenadine. Shake over ice and strain. Can't recall exact proportions, sorry, but obviously more rum than anything else. |
