Mike Vick gets me thrown out of a bar in St. Louis
 

Tonight a friend and I head out for a few beers. We usually start out at bar 1 (The Majestic) and then head to bar 2 (Rosie's) for a nightcap. The bartender at bar 2 is almost always a dick to everyone, but we have thick skin so we just ignore it as part of the schtick at this dive bar.

Tonight we go to Rosie's for our nightcap, and we almost immediately hit it off with a cute blonde who is there with her English bulldog. She eventually gets up to go to the bathroom, so my friend and I head to the bar for another round. Whilst there I also ask the bartender to fill up the dog's water bowl that is sitting on the floor. The following conversation ensues:

Me: Um, would you mind re-filling the dog's bowl?
Him: WTF do you mean?
Me: Could you please give the dog more water?
Him: Why the [censored] should I?
Me: He is thirsty.
Him: I have already filled it up three times. [censored] the dog.
Me: Are you Mike Vick or something?
Him: Get the [censored] out! I mean it. Now.

Note: My friend and I go here frequently and always leave a generous tip. The bartender knows us by name. The bar was empty (as usual). Did I make a completely inappropriate joke, or is the bartender just an [censored]?

I have never been in another bar that allows dogs. Rosie's is a dive bar that apparently tolerates everything except Mike Vick jokes.

Perhaps. She clearly indicated that she had a boyfriend, and we were just talking to her. She came over to our table after we came to the defense of her dog. Another dog in the bar tried to hump him, and he became aggressive towards it. She castigated her dog and apologized to the other dog owner, and we told her her dog wasn't at fault. Both dogs were males, so maybe this is a gay dog bar.

Man this brings back memories. I used to live at 4545 laclede in school. The majestic was great for late nights. Not surprised about rosie's - that place always had a wierd vibe even for me and I love dive bars.

Maybe the barkeep isn't thrilled with you chatting up the blonde he'd like to be chatting up, which is why he is putting up with the damn dog in the first place. He's filled up the bowl three times already, probably sick and tired of caretaking for a smelly animal when all that has to be done is the owner of the dog going to the john and filling the bowl in the sink, but he's putting up with the dog and serving the dog probably because it's a cute blonde. Figures maybe you should fill up the damn bowl if you care so much and are getting along so splendidly with the girl.

I chuckled at your joke. Seriously though, find a new bar. The bartender sounds like a huge bag of douche. Also, why put up with verbal abuse when the bar is basically empty anyway?
