What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

I mean at the game.

For me it was Roger Clemens going into the seventh against the Angels. There was a loud groan when some scrub infielder looped a single just out of the infield.

Curious about other people's experiences, or who of you have actually seen one.

I actually saw a minor league no-no live (other than high school ball, in which I've seen a couple 7-inning no-nos and several five-inning ones due to the 10-run rule).

Hagerstown Suns games a couple years back, Father's Day, Gabriel Hernandez threw it. The game gave the Suns the South Atlantic League first-half title.

Kerry Wood gave up a blooper to Mark Loretta in the 7th. He struck out 14 in that game. Leiber had thrown a one-hitter the day before around a rain delay, I was also there.

Re: What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

I have been to two 1-hitters. In one game Steve Trachsel retired the 1st 17 batters. The Rockies starting pitcher Tsing Chao Tsu or whatever the [censored] his name was(who would later become their closer)was making his major league debut. So in his 2nd major league AB he ripped a double over the CFers head (I think it was Timo Perez), the ball was misplayed and probably should have been caught. Trachsel retired the next 9 hitters before with 2/outs in the 9th the final batter reached on error, he got the next hitter. So in reality of the 1st 27 hitters he should have got all of them, damn you Timo!

The 2nd game was Tom Glavine again against the Rockies. With 1 out in the 8th some peice of [censored] named Kit Pellow hit a clean double off the wall. Glavine went on to finish the 1-hitter.

Having only been to two games ever, the best I can manage is when Gabbard shut down the Rangers through four at Fenway last month, then collapsed in the fifth.

Re: What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

i win this thread along with another 2er (who i cant remember but he hopefully he chimes in.)

apr 12 of some year in the early 90s. im thinking 94. was my bday and i went to a doubleheader vs the red sox at cleveland municipal stadium.

the sox pitcher went 8 innings giving up no hits but the tribe scored on some walks and errors and won the game without batting in the 9th. so the sox pitcher never came on to finish and never was credited with a no hitter.

hopefully the other 2er chimes in as he has the details and unfortunately i deleted his pm.

Todd Stottlemyre threw a one hitter, a double with one out in the 8th ruined the no hitter.

I went to something rarer than a perfect game... one lost to the 27th batter:

On September 2, 2001, Mike Mussina of the Yankees gave up a two-strike single to Red Sox pinch-hitter Carl Everett.

Although I am a Sox fan, I was rooting hard for him to get it.

Dudd,
I was at this game too as was 2+2 poster Victor.
Man was it freaking cold.

At the time it technically did not count as a no-no.
In the 2nd game, Clemens threw a 2-hitter.
The Indians set a record by only getting 2 hits in a doubleheader yet they still were able to come away with a split.

I also saw a 7-inning no-hitter in the minor-leagues in 96. Joe Atwater of the St. Lucie Mets vs. the Daytona Cubs.
It was the worst no-hitter ever.
Almost every ball the Cubs put in play was an absolute bullet. Lots of great defense behind him. His stuff wasn't really that great.

The pitcher for Daytona in that game threw a 2-hitter and had 12 K's in his 6 innings of work (because St. Lucie did not have to bat in the bottom of the 7th).
He gave a cheapo, bloop HR down the line that was helped by the wind and he lost 1-0.

I made a nice play in little-league at 2B for the final out to preserve our stud's no-hitter. We beat the best team in the league. Our pitcher told a few of the guys that he was going to throw a no-no that night and he stayed true to his word.

uglyowl - any proof that it is rarer to lose a perfecto to the 27th batter than it is to actually throw a perfect-game?

Dave Stieb lost a few no-no's in the 9th although I'm not sure if any of them were perfect-games.
We used to call it "throwing a Stieb."

I remember Ron Robinson of the Reds lost his perfecto to the 27th batter in 88. It was against MTL and he was one strike away. Broken up by Wallace Johnson. This was a few months before Tom Browning would throw his perfect game against LA. I know a few people including a couple high-school teachers of mine who were at that game.

I think I've only seen one no-no broken up with 1 out to go.
Ricardo Rodriguez of the Vero Beach Dodgers in 2001 against the Sarasota Red Sox broken up by a player named Jess Graham I believe.
The two teams had played 19 innings until 1:35am the night before and then had to play a 1:00pm game the next day on Sunday so it wasn't too surprising that the batters didn't so hot.

Re: What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

I just found it on wiki. Uglyowl is correct.

Only 9 times has a perfecto been lost to the 27th batter.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_game

* On July 4, 1908, Hooks Wiltse of the New York Giants hit Philadelphia Phillies pitcher George McQuillan in a scoreless game—the only time a 0-0 perfecto has been broken up by the 27th batter. Wiltse pitched on, winning 1-0; his ten-inning no-hitter set a record for longest complete game no-hitter that has been tied twice but never broken.[13]
* On August 5, 1932, Tommy Bridges of the Detroit Tigers gave up a pinch-hit single to Dave Harris in a 13-0 win against the Senators.
* On June 27, 1958, Billy Pierce of the Chicago White Sox gave up a double, which landed just inches in fair territory, to Washington's Ed Fitzgerald.
* On September 3, 1972, Milt Pappas of the Chicago Cubs walked Padres pinch-hitter Larry Stahl on a borderline 3-2 pitch. Pappas finished with a no-hitter. The umpire was a first-year man, Bruce Froemming, who would go on to umpire in a record 11 no-hitters.[14] A quarter-century later, a Chicago radio personality, during an interview with Pappas, got Froemming on the phone and the two argued on the air.
* On April 15, 1983, Milt Wilcox of the Tigers surrendered a single to White Sox Jerry Hairston.
* On May 2, 1988, Ron Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds gave up a hit to the Expos' Wallace Johnson. Robinson then allowed a two-run homer to Tim Raines and was removed from the game. The final score was 3-2, with Robinson the winner.
* On August 4, 1989, Dave Stieb of the Blue Jays gave up a double to the New York Yankees' Roberto Kelly, followed by an RBI single by Steve Sax. Stieb finished with a 2-1 victory.
* On April 20, 1990, Brian Holman of the Seattle Mariners gave up a home run to Ken Phelps of the Oakland Athletics.
* On September 2, 2001, Mike Mussina of the Yankees gave up a two-strike single to Red Sox pinch-hitter Carl Everett.

Re: What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

just remembered a game in Elmira, NY in 2002 in which a pitcher named Justin Stine would have thrown a no-hitter.
But the official scorer changed a 7th or 8th inning error to a hit several minutes later.

In the mior-leagues, it's not uncommon for a manger to offer his input on the scoring decision if they think a grievous mistake has been made and then it's up to the official scorer as to whether to accept the input.

Stine's OWN MANAGER called up to the press-box to say that 3B Osmani Garcia would have needed more than usual effort to field a sharp-ish grounder that hit off his glove.
So it was this pitcher's own manager who essentially took the no-no away from him.

The pitcher himself took it amazingly well and in good spirits having just thrown a terrific game.
I had agreed with the official-scorer that it was probably an error but my personal rooting for this guy to throw the no-no may have been biasing me somewhat.

The 3B himself said he should have been able to field the ball and that he thought it was an error. But he was the type who would always this about himself and pretty much always felt that ANY play he didn't make was his fault.

A guy threw a no-no on the last game of the year during my freshman season in college. I wasn't playing, I was on the bench, and this kid SUCKED and was like 29 years old and became the head coach of our team like 4 years later. And he was a douche. But it was a pretty awesome day.

I was lucky enough to be at Fenway on Apr 27th, 2002. Got to see Derek Lowe pitch a no hitter vs the D-Rays. Game wasn't that exciting, Sox won 10-0, until the last 3 innings when the crowd started to really get into it, knowing what was happening.

However there is a game NO ONE ever talks abotu where Glendon Rusch through 8 1 hit innign sBenitez pitched a hitless 9th. The hit Ruch gave up WAS AN ERROR 100% no questions ask. I cannot comprehend why it was scored a hit.

Re: What\'s the closest you\'ve seen to a no-hitter LIVE.

At a Cubs game back in '04 I think. Mark Prior came off the DL in like mid-June and I went with a few friends to the game. He was perfect into the 5th inning, but then gave up a hit. Cubs ended up losing 2-1 to the Pirates when Joe Borowski blew it in the ninth.

I threw a no-hitter my freshman year in high school, but it was one of the 5 inning slaughters (we won 12-0). Then, my sophomore year I only started one game all year, and it was against the same team. I took a no-no into the 5th again when the #8 hitter snuck a single through the hole. They scored 2 unearned runs off of a few walks and some crappy fielding errors, so it was weird to have not given up a hit and still have given up runs.

It was some stupid hit that wasn't hit that hard that snuck through. I think Prior got taken out after the inning because they didn't want his pitch count to get too high so he wouldn't get injured (that obv. worked in the long run). I remember Borowski giving up an RBI single to Craig Wilson (with the mullet) and booing.

Jose Macias led off the ninth with a double, but of course, was stranded by the next 3 batters.

Was living in Burlington, N.C. about five years ago. I'm from the northeast and a diehard sox fan so carolina was a bit of a culture shock for the year or so I was there. All basketball and nascar talk on radio. It was sooooo aggravating.
Anyway, my girl and I used to make the forty minute trip to durham to see the bulls play as much as we could. Went one night and Jason Tyner (speedy little outfielder once for D rays) broke up the no no with two outs in the ninth. I don't believe the original starting pitcher was even still in there so it wasn't like it was made to even be a big deal (most of the fans had left).

oh ya, it was some kind of solid hit through the right side of the infield. Can't remember if it was a line drive over second baseman's head or sharp two hopper through the hole.

I have never seen anything close to a no-no live, but by far the most dominating performance I ever saw was Maddux against the Blue Jays in 1998. Our seats were right behind home plate and the umpire was well known for having a wide strike zone. Maddux gave up 8 hits but Toronto had 1 runner advance to 3rd with 2 outs in the ninth and only two other players made it to 2nd the whole game. Maddux had 13 k's.

1990, Tiger Stadium, Royals vs. Tigers

Kevin Appier surrendered a leadoff single to Lou Whitaker and then did not allow another hit. At least, that's how I remember it. I was only 8.

August 2003, Shea Stadium, Rockies vs. Mets

Steve Trachsel pitched 5 2/3 perfect innings before giving up a double to Colorado's pitcher. I can't remember his name for sure. I know he was Korean and had a large contingent of fans at the game. It might have been Ja Seo. Anyway, I think that is the only hit Trachsel allowed. No idea if that is correct spelling.

So if my memory serves me, I have seen two 1-hitters.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know of a site where it's easy to find old box scores if you wanted to look up games you had attended?

"What am I supposed to do with this?" he said.

He signed the back of the card and seemed to have a pretty good sense of humor about it.
