Showtime\'s \"Californication\"

did anyone else check this out after the season 3 premiere of weeds?

i thought it was 30 minutes of brilliance and david duchovny was great. there were several scenes that were both shocking, pathetic, and genius all rolled into one.

not sure if the storyline will have staying power or not, but it will make for one great season if they continue on with the hot naked girls and really dark and dry humor that the one hit wonder author/main character spews at everyone around him. any other thoughts on this show? seems like a good fit for many of the edf'ers with good senses of humor.

cheers. J.

J,

Any good show deserves its own thread here. Speaking of that, someone should make a "Mad Men" thread.

I recorded this one, will check it out this weekend.

oh man seriously OP? this was just horrible television (and i'm inclined to want to like it since a friend is an assistant to the writing staff).

the one saving grace was when that girl was riding Hank and decided to sock him in the face when he was about to bust. that was laugh out loud funny.

good show, only seen a couple, but it's on my dvd-purchase list, which is the only way I watch good tv shows anymore anyway.

i will admit i really wanted to like it.
it has a ton of elements that i look for in a show, but that being said i thought there were several very good very very funny moments.

the opening scene. great and shocking.
the punch. obv.
his total destruction of the girl on the dinner date.
daughter at the party scene.
a bunch of his interactions w/x-wife.

that is more good moments than some shows have in a season.
horrible tv or not iyo, i think it has hope to be brilliant.

ps. el d--mad men is good, but i am a few eps. behind.

pss. sorry for the misspelling in the title. i drank a really good bottle of wine with dinner and was drunk and blissful on ribeye.

I thought the show was ok. Good enough that I will continue to watch it.

Even the really good shows usually take me 3-4 episodes minimum before I can really get into a show, mainly because I get a better feel for the characters.

Didn't put some things together till this episode. The young chick that he bangs was the little girl on The Nanny. Man shes gotten older and has a great rack.

The porn star he is going to bang this episode is also a real porn star. Don't know her name though.

The show is nothing really special. You get a lot of [censored] though.

J,

I really liked this episode as well. I also like the high number of naked chicks we get to see. So far I'm really liking it, but I have a slight fear that it'll start to become repetitive. It'll be interesting to see if they keep things at this level or try to make it a little more serious/deeper in tone.

I enjoyed the first two episodes of the show. My only beef: The writers making Mia, the husbands daughter (Madeline Zima in real life), 16 years old. Are we truely suppossed to believe this girl is a sophomore in high school? I mean, come on. I might be a bit nitty though. What do others think?

Yeah, I totally agree...I thought it was a mistake making her 16, when 17 would have made the point just as well and been more believable.

After two episodes, the show seems like it will be a worthwhile angry-man fantasy--a couple scenes have been overdone or felt forced, but it's pretty good.

16 eliminates a possible encroaching "she's almost 18!" storyline I think.

OK, this is sort of a silly discussion, but I feel like 16 is WAY WAY skeezier than 17.

Wow, if you had told me when I was watching X-files in like 1994 that in 2007 I would be watching a television show where David Duchovny has sex with multiple women, smokes weed, gets drunk, [censored] a chick on his ex gf's fiance's bed and throws up all over his painting and then said "its all good:...well I'm not sure what I would have thought, but I liked it.

thought the vomit bit was really great, as was any scene involving duchovny and billy bob.

hated the bit where we get the voice over of his article as he types it in the apple store. way too much like sex and the city.

Re: Showtime\'s \"Califronication\"

oh yummy.

finally watched second ep.

love paula marshall (sonja) the girl he gets high, humps, and pukes with. she has been in like a million terrible sitcoms, but was most memorable in "the outing" ep. of seinfeld. where george says "lets have sex RIGHT NOW"

man has she aged well. look ab. fab. naked for sure.
i enjoyed this one, but agree that the 16 y.o. stuff is a touch lame, although the girl is a hottie.

i hope paula marshall returns in all her naked glory.

later. J.

Re: Showtime\'s \"Califronication\"

Love the nakedness. One of the funniest shows on right now. But I agree with a couple of other posters who think they would run out of jokes. At some point his life will have to move forward and when it does it will be real difficult to keep the humor on this level.

erroneous 08-24-2007 04:34 AM

Re: Showtime\'s \"Califronication\"

I can't help to think that the last episode of the season is going to be everybody finding out that Duchovny slept with the daughter. possibly some sort of cliffhanger.

Hate to hijack the thread a little, but Showtime has really impressed me with a lot of their tv series'sssss that have came out in the past couple of years. Weeds, Californication, and Sleeper Cell are all great shows and Dexter is currently my favorite show on television. They really are giving HBO a run for their money. If only HBO would put Arliss back on the air (sarcasm).

Note: I loved Arliss cause I'm a huge sports fan, but acting was ridiculously brutal.

Re: Showtime\'s \"Califronication\"

I just caught the second episode. Awesome, the vomit doggie style scene was the first time I've had a legitimate belly laugh while watching tv forever. "You are one [censored] up thetan."

I love David Duchovny even though he always plays the tortured soul.

But...can we either correct the typo in the thread title or consolidate this thread with Daryn's in OOT somehow...?

thanks shaniac!! the typo is killing me (esp. because it is mine) and also because i am generally a stickler about such things. just about to go watch ep. 3, but i have already heard good things around the table about it tonight so i know i won't be disappointed.

on a small side note: boris stopped in tonight out of the blue and had a couple of beers. wasn't really expecting him in big sky country. lucky me! forgot to discuss this show, but we did discuss you el d.

yeah i was kinda surprised about the SG reference but damn it's one of the best sites on the internet (besides BBV4lyfe) so why not.
i liked the 1st episode and the 2nd episode as well but it seems like its getting better and better. can't wait for e4.

also, any ideas about viewer ratings? would hate it if the show would get cancelled after one season.

Unlikely:

Showtime's Monday night comedy block held strong a week after the premiere. Although Weeds lost 100,000 viewers from its season opener, it still came in at a respectable 729,000.

Despite the lower lead-in, Californication actually managed to increase its totals -- up to 684,000 from the premiere's 550,000.

I really think this show will get even better. I mean it starts out with boobies and funny monologues/cynical observations...but as it keeps building how the characters are interlinked I think there will be some pretty cool twists and turns they will build in.

It actually seems to have a direction unlike, oh, entourage which has hot chicks and funny/hilarious situations but just sorta meanders around aimlessly.

From the first line about the BJ to the Dylan at the end, a really well-crafted episode.
