how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

Saturday 4 friends are golfing. Me and one of the others are betting on every hole. We get to the 18th hole which was a par 5 600 yeard hole and the guy i was betting with offers a side bet to a 3rd friend that I would win the hole. The conversation went like this.

Friend 1: Yo you want a sidebet that greenmachine will win this hole for 2 bucks

Friend 2: Yeah sure

So we play the hole and we wind up in a tie. As we are settling up on all our wagers friend 1 says to friend 2 you owe me 2 bucks. Friend 2 says what do you mean it was a tie. Friend 2 says no you had Greenmachine to win, he didnt win it was a tie. Now clearly the way the bet was offered and went down, and based on any other bet any of us has made together, if it was a tie is should be a chop. So all 3 other people immidiatly tell him hes wrong and its an angle shoot, but friend 1 continues to insist that he wins the bet.

Now clearly the 2 dollars here is a trivial amount of money, so friend number 2 is basically liek is 2 dollars worth being a scumbag. Friend 1 continues to insist that he is right, and so friend 1 pays him, but we are all furious with this guy who we have been friends with since high school.

So OOT how big of a scumbag angle shooter is our friend?

You can learn a lot about people by gambling with them.

what is even being said here? a tie is not a win. is he trying to argue that both guys "won"?

Daryn,

He is arguing that friend 2 took a bet that Greenmachine WINS the 18th hole. it was a tie therefore Greenmachine didnt win. SO by the pure wording I guess hes right, but there was never any mention of a tie. Plus if he would win if its a tie, he would have had to give odds as A tie is the most likely result.

How is he not right? That you are experts at taking on bets that have crappy odds for you is not his fault.

He won the bet. What's the problem. You guys are the ones getting your panties twisted up about $2. I think you guys are more douchey for trying to welsh on it than he is for insisting he's right.

Re: how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

So he bet on himself against you that he'd win the hole

He bet against himself in the side bet

If he bet the same amounts with each of you, this seems pretty ingenious, the only thing in it for him is the possibility of a tie in which he profits.

Kinda sounds a lot like the way casinos operate, after I think about it a bit as well

FocusedOne 08-13-2007 09:41 AM

Re: how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

Actually I agree with the friend. He took a sidebet on GM to win. Don't you assume that the person he made the bet with is taking the opposite player to win for $2? Maybe the person accepting it should have said, "Okay you get GM to win for $2, I get the other player plus a tie." I think that it is assumed that for a tie you would void the bet.

Oh, and it's $2. Seriously.

I have a group of friends that makes $2 bets on everything. Angle shoots are actually encouraged. Bets are carefully worded. Christ, it's $2.

Scumbag? because he knows how to gamble right? wtf? you guys are the ones being sore losers. the kid said "to win", you didnt win did you? well than it is a lost bet. Would I ever get emmotional abotu 2$? nah, but the kid isnt wrong.

someone said it earlier, but there are two types of gamblers, those that think it is some "noble endeavor" and those thing encourage angle shoots, and winning by wording. The latter is usually much much more fun, and more profitable.

like i said in the OP the money is not important. its the idea that the bet just went down casually where friend 1 offers a small bet to take greenmachine on the 18th hole. The fact that it was only 2 dollars made it very casual. I suppose if they were betting for a lot of money maybe the would have laid it out contractually, but it was so loosely put together.

I really find this mentality weird for anyone frequenting a poker board. adjusting things based on how big the bet is doesnt make sense. When I bet, whether its just for [censored] and giggles or for serious money, I want to win above all else.

Re: how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

everyone involved totally agreed that by the wording of the bet friend 1 wins. We bet all the time and do not angle shoot each other. If there had been some past history of this then ok, but we have bet each other thousands of times and this is the first time any one of us has thrown a hustle out.

That's exactly what I thought. Since the wager was $2, obviously he thought it was understood that a tie meant he won. He isn't a scumbag at all. Now if the wager was an amount that was meaningful then shame on the idiot for bet the WIN to not clarify whether a tie was a push or not.

Re: how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

So yet again, you didn't win the hole, hence the bet was lost. Why the hell are you making a big deal of it?

Your friend should have said "If X wins, I get $2, if Y wins you get $2." Then its clear what a tie means. It's not like you guys never played the hole and he is saying "well we never played it, so he didn't win. pay up!"

How is this a sucker? Anyone that has played any golf knows of skins and match play and understands a 'win' versus a 'halve'. This is a legit bet -- OP and his other two douche friends need to STFU and pay.

Re: how big a scumbag is my friend? you decide

I can't believe that out of a random group 4 gamblers, 3 believe that this is a chop. Friend A won the god damn bet. There isn't any debate or misunderstanding, this isn't an angle shoot. Maybe him insisting that friend B pay up is a little lame but not nearly as lame as you and your other friends trying to claim that a tie is a chop.

Might have been funny if Friend 2 murdered GM before he had a chance to play the hole, then he would win the bet and we'd never have to read this retarded thread LDO.

I think it is pretty clear that he should not win the $2. I don't do a lot of prop betting, but given the nature of the bet and the situation, he seems like the kind of person I would not want to be with in the future.

The key to the story, is that if the group handles all the ties as a chop, this bet should be the same. Why should two friends chop on this bet, but this guy win?

Next time you golf, offer to give X strokes to any player but you get one throw.

When the match is tight late in the round and your opponent has an 18" putt to take the lead.... Take your throw. Pick up HIS ball and chuck it into the weeds.

Your friend was right but a big scumbag. The reason he was a big scumbag instead of an average one was because it was only a couple bucks.

Bet one was: Winner wins $$$ from hole, therefore ties=chop

Bet two was that one guy would win, therefore tie <> chop

Pretty standard.
