SOUL thread. give it to me.

been listening to some artists w/ some intensely good music lately.

some selections i'd love to share are:

Sam Cooke: Jesus Gives Me Water, Summertime, Trouble Blues

i wish he didn't die so young so he could have recorded more.

new artist w/ a very similar type of soul w/ a song i can link:

Michael Buble: Feelin good

Linky Linkerton

Michael Buble: Fever

Linky McLinksalot

go to 1:30 or so to avoid listening to letterman et.al.

fantastic singer. not the best performance, but i don't know how to link thinks from itunes. if we can figure that out i'd love to share the buble recording i have as well as the cooke Jesus song with you all

one of the best songs!! it is a gospel type song sung by sam cooke and his accompanyists (accapella)

SOOOOOOOoooooooooo,

LINK or description to your favorite SOULfull artists

thanks,
Barron

Re: SOUL thread. give it to me.

Im a huge fan of soul music, and Buble, but I dont know if I really consider him a soul singer, especially the longs you listed, I put them more under the categories of "standards".

Soul artist, that pretty much any song by them rules:

Sam and Dave
curtis Mayfield
gladys knight and the pips
the delfonics

This is probably my number one genre of music, its what I grew up on, and brings me back to saturday afternoons, hanging out in my dads garage, and listening to his old 8-track stero while a bunch of old italians hung out in the garden, and bbq'ed for me, when they werent sneaking me sips of beer.

awesome, i nver would have heard of sam & dave ... so thanks.

i'll need to get more of the others also.

in terms of "soul" i took a vast liberty w/ the definition so i'm probably wrong there but i just associate the feeling and relaying of a song with deeply amazing vocal talent to be "soul" and maybe are standards.

i think you knew what i was looking for though so good looks

Dcifr,

Wow, I think that Buble rendition of Fever sucks really, really, really hard.

Otis Redding - Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay

Marvin Gaye - Let's Get It On (Jack Black's cover in High Fidelity was pretty damn sweet)

Bill Withers - Ain't No Sunshine

Al Green - Let's Stay Together

The Temptations - Papa Was a Rollin' Stone

If you like teh older stuff, check out Etta James, and I agree with El D, only women should sing Fever.

I bet you'll like this: Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man

Joss Stone version

quids,

Peggy Lee - Fever

Hard to top that, and I generally agree re: women singing that song. Except for THE KING - Fever!

Those were a bunch of classics. A newer artist: Tay Zonday - Chocolate Rain (asofel turned me on to this guy)

Great choice. Lou Rawls does a great job in the background on that one too. I also strongly recommend A Change Gonna Come

This thread needs much more Otis Redding. Speaking of someone who died way before his time, he was killed at 26 in a plane crash. We missed out on some great, great music.

Solomon Burke is great, but I have problems finding much good stuff on YouTube to share. There is a ton of live stuff, but I prefer his studio work.

Not quite sure if this is classed as soul, but worth mentioning anyway -

Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street

Man, Tarantino films have introduced me to some really great songs.

Donny Hathaway, like Sam Cooke, died way too soon.

The Ghetto
Jealous Guy

The Staples Singers are generally considered more gospel but I think a lot of the stuff they did falls under the "soul" heading. Mavis still performs, I saw her a couple of years ago and she was awesome.

Respect Yourself

Let's Do It Again

Also ElD mentioned Bill Withers, excellent choice. Imo his "Live at Carnegie Hall" record is a must have, one the best live albums of all time

Try Otis Redding's "Down in the Valley." Anything by him is great. His voice was made to sing soul.

Hard to top this:

Big Mama thornton's version of hound dog with Buddy Guy on lead guitar. More blues than soul, but whatever.

WFMU podcasts its Downtown Soulville show, a solid hour of vintage soul 45s both popular and obscure. Check Mister Fine Wine's playlist page and podcast link here.

Also, once a month another soul DJ on FMU subs for Fine Wine. His RealAudio archives can be found here.

As to specific artists, I like some of the Detroit Emeralds' work, particularly "Feel the Need in Me." Also, the original soul version of "Don't Leave Me This Way" by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes is very nice.

For a great new voice with a ton of soul, try Jamie Lidell's album 'Multiply' Amazon page.

Here's him in some live performance
Multiply live

Stay clear of any of his other albums though... His older stuff is more techno-electro related music and completely different from the Multiply album.

Edited to add links

Re: SOUL thread. give it to me.

One of my all-time favorites: The Reverend Al Green, and my favorite song of his (even though they're all damn good):

Love and Happiness

I second the previous recommendation of Solomon Burke. One of my favorite Solomon Burke songs: None of Us Are Free (can't find a good version of his on youtube)

Another favorite of mine is Marva Whitney. She's categorized more as funk but then funk and soul are pretty much sister genres, so I'll include her.

Marva Whitney - Things Got to Get Better (who's that bad-ass cat in the shadows directing the band...)

Re: SOUL thread. give it to me.

Sam Cooke is the absolute king and if there is a prince it is Otis Redding.

My personal favorite soul recording of all time is Otis' posthumous album: "Remember Me". It contains alternate recordings of many of his classics. The alternate records just blow away the commercial ones. Otis liked to do 4 or 5 takes of a song with varying degrees of soul. The people making this compilation tried to use the most "soulful" versions of a song. Right off the top of my head I can say that he has 4 of my top 10 favorite songs of all time of any artist, all on one CD:

-Remember Me
-Send Me Some Lovin (much slower than the commercially released version)
-Come to Me (the piano and guitar on this track are amazing, definitely my go to sad song.)

On all three of these, you really get the feeling that he was singing to an old lover and that his heart actually felt the pain conveyed in the songs.

-The Dock of the Bay (on this take, he actually makes the seagull and ocean sounds that were digitally put in to the real version of the song later. It is FAR superior to the commercially released track but was not released because he messed up the whistle part.)

Link to my favorite album of all time. Before I bought this I hadn't bought a CD in 3 years.

Try a Little Tenderness

My favorite Sam Cooke Song- Tennessee Waltz

Don't really have anything to add but this summer at Bonnaroo I saw Cold War Kids cover "A Change Is Gonna Come". Pretty cool.

I love Stax records. This thread is a great idea.

I must say, my favorite rendition of the Tennessee Waltz (great song) is by the incomparable Norah Jones:

this and This Little Light of Mine are my two favorite Sam Cooke songs. I like everything he did, but i like the gritty edge you get from his live tracks (and the songs targeted toward the black audience) versus the smooth Sam that you got on the radio (cupid, chain gang, etc)

Yes, Sam Cooke is definitely the King of Soul.
Love Donny Hathaway too.

Best "new" soul is without a doubt D'angelo:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=DMb8BhCXN...ed&search=

There are several clips on Youtube but I used that because David Sanborn is also the man

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8fNtipp5RLs

That's my favorite D'angelo song, produced by DJ Premier

R. Kelly is a total hack compared to this guy, but hey, I guess he didn't get fat and burn out on drugs...

If you like Michael Buble's version of Feeling Good, look up Nina Simone's. She can really wail, singing it like only a black woman can, and the trombones backing her definitely outshine Buble's band here.

Edit: Here we go: http://youtube.com/watch?v=nDsNLnsg6lo

Re: SOUL thread. give it to me.

One absolute vocal monster who hasn't been mentioned yet is Eva Cassidy. It's a real shame she died young and before she really got the acclaim she deserves. She just kills on some of her recordings:

Wade in the Water -- this is pretty easily the best recording of this song that I've ever heard.

Honeysuckle Rose -- when it was written back in the early days of jazz, this was a fairly quick hot jazz number. This recording really changed things around taking the tempo way down. Nowadays if I hear people do this song, it's slow more often than not, and it's usually a tip of the hat to this recording.

Stormy Monday -- I can't honestly say that this is the best recording I've heard of this particular song. It's been done so many times by so many legends. However, she still hangs with them.

Time After Time

Another soulful song I find infectious is Ruthie Foster's Travelin' Shoes. This is a horrible video and the audio isn't much better, but check it out on iTunes. Her version is amazing.

Stax-Volt Volume 1
Stax-Volt Volume 2
Stax-Volt Volume 3

I just recently got all 3 of these and they are some of the best 25-30 CDs of music ever made. I load them all in to Winamp and shuffle and it's like a kickass soul oldies station that plays stuff you never heard in your life. I had never known of artists like Carla Thomas, William Bell, and Barbara Stephens, but they are nearly the equals of Otis Redding or Etta James. Highest possible recommendation.

I just saw this great thread. You should listen to these:

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin - Night Life - http://youtube.com/watch?v=KTXpXO6jQHg

Otis Redding - A Change is Gonna Come - http://youtube.com/watch?v=6kXW0VtQc0I

Percy Sledge - It Tears Me Up - http://youtube.com/watch?v=pm5ARHpYdr4

Ray Charles - What'd I Say - http://youtube.com/watch?v=zIYLF9KBdaU

Wilson Pickett - In the Midnight Hour - http://youtube.com/watch?v=zkXtnknA8Ck

A couple of newer guys - I love their voices:

Anthony Hamilton - Charlene - http://youtube.com/watch?v=Jst0qnDhQRw

Jaheim - Put that Woman First - http://youtube.com/watch?v=mciblMkL9q0

I wish I knew how to put a label on a link.
